Vanity: Yontoo Pagerage virus?

Has anyone else had issues with Yontoo Pagerage

So today I go to look at my gmail on my Windows XP PC (yes it is now 5 years old) with my Mozilla Firefox browser. Gmail comes up, briefly, then disappears, leaving a URL for yontoo in the URL window.

I check my installed programs, and there is Yontoo, installed about a month ago, but I did not install it.

So I uninstalled Yontoo. But now I still have the same problem with gmail, only the URL window refers to "plus.google.com...", and I get a "Loading..." message on the screen, but nothing ever loads that I can tell.

Gmail works fine through Internet Explorer on this machine. I also have no problems getting to gmail on my laptop (IE 9), or through my Droid.

So the problem is limited to this machine, and through Firefox.

Anyone else have similar issues, and how did you solve it?

Man, I wish I could help.
I didn’t even know what it was.
Looked it up and there are hundreds of web sites, basically saying “help”.
Because we are a Mac family, we do not run into these sorts of things often.
I wish you luck, it doesn’t seem like something easily fixed.
However, there are really smart and informed people on FR who I am confident can help you.

Check for pagerage toolbar, remove it. You may have to reload your addons also

Thanks, but I have no Pagerage toolbar, nor any reference to it in View > Toolbars

Just checked, and “PageRage” is a Facebook tool. When using Google and/or Facebook products, well, you kinda deserve what you get.

See if you can find out when you installed (intentionally or not) this “PageRage” crap, and restore your system to a previous restore point.

Otherwise, I got nothing for you.

Go to Start / Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs.

See if the toolbar is there and remove it.

Having some free software like REVO remover does a better job of ensuring all traces are removed, but start with what you got.

If this is installed as a toolbar, neither Symantec nor any other virus program will do anything about it.

It is likely ‘installed’ and shows as a toolbar and also may be in the AUTORUN list.

A free program such as CCLEANER has the options to control the STARTUP/AUTORUN list and such things as toolbar ‘installs’ can be removed easily.

These BHO’s (Browser Helper Object) are really pests, not viruses.

I have recently discovered that I have one, or a few, redirect viruses. The first I found was “8.26.70.252”, then a beeq, and I’m thinkin I still have problems that I haven’t found yet.

I’ve run malwarebytes, AVG, and I’m about to run McAffee.

I don’t see the 8.26.70.252 anymore, altho I’m not sure I got rid of it. Malwarebytes took care of that. I ran AVG and it found a number of viruses, all in Java files, so got rid of those.

Not sure if I have other problems. I’m gonna run McAffee and see what happens with that, and then google for a while and see if I get redirected again.

I’m not a computer dude so this is really starting to suck.

When using Google and/or Facebook products, well, you kinda deserve what you get.

But it's a computer, with a browser and a program control panel and you can REMOVE any program you do not want. As a habit, one should check for and remove any programs that are of no use or not wanted.

There are many tools (free programs) that make it very easy.

Your registry should be cleaned often. Same thing, very simple programs will do it quickly for you.

Most user's PC's are loaded down with tons of excess 'software', which the user does not need or is unaware exists.

These toolbars are one of the most common type of 'excess' software (pests). Some are very useful, but some take revenge for you trying to 'not use' them by altering your home page, or something like ECCL has had happen.

If you haven't fixed it yet, tell me, and I'll have you check a few things and maybe download a helpful program and it will soon be fixed.

P.S. THere is an ADD ON for Firefox called NO REDIRECT. Depending on whether your problem is a redirect or a b.h.o. (which is redundant), that ADDON program may be of value to you as well, and good to have no matter what.

HIjack This should really be used by only experienced users.

I mean, you can take the time to send a log in and wait for a review, and have them help you solve your problem, but it really is easier to do yourself, with other, much safer(for the inexperienced) software.

Should I reinstall Firefox?

Reinstalling Firefox won't help, as it defaults to leaving bookmarks, bho's, etc. in place, when you remove and reinstall it. (you of course have the option, but then you will lose all your bookmarks, and the toolbars (if any) that you use/like.

The pest you have is a reloading or redirecting pest, and is loaded in either 'programs' (as I referred to before) or in 'Startup'.

First task, find out if that is true with ADD/REMOVE programs. Look for something with BHO , TOOLBAR, YONTOO PAGERAGE.

Prior to starting this thread, I used Ccleaner to uninstall Yontoo.

I regularly use Ccleaner to clean my registry.

There were no programs to uninstall that refer to BHO , TOOLBAR, or YONTOO PAGERAGE.

I use Ccleaner, and it has an option to do System Restores. I have never done one. Ccleaner lists the date and time and description of each restore point. You have to click on a restore point, then hit a “Remove” button.

Do I “remove” all the restore points back to when my Gmail worked (appx 1 wk ago)?

Going the SYSTEM RESTORE route:

It is not necessary to REMOVE any restore points, until at least after you successfully restore to a good point.

Do not use CCLEANER to try to do a RESTORE. It is only for cleaning up old RESTORES.

Go to START : ALL PROGRAMS : ACCESSORIES : SYSTEM TOOLS : SYSTEM RESTORE

Ensure “Restore to a previous checkpoint” is ‘marked’ and click NEXT.

Pick the proper restore point (by the date you wish) and click NEXT

Pretty simple after that. Restore will proceed and then see how things are afterward.
