Obama Can't Do Fourth Grade Math; '60 Mil. Divided by 600 Thous. is \$54.94'

We've covered the Obama's campaign problems with math before. A few months ago they stated that 12 times 40 equaled 1,000. Today, they're publishing nonsensical statistics about the money Obama raised during the month of May. Before we begin, please enjoy the jumbled mess that President Obama himself posted online:

...Importantly, Obama touts the average donation as being exactly \$54.94 in order to pretend that he is backed almost exclusively by average Americans. Unfortunately for him, even the average American has a calculator handy. So let's see if Obama's math holds up.

Now, since I wasn't certain if they used the "Total Donors" or "Total Cumulative Donors" to figure out the \$54.94, I'm going to assume Total Donors first.

...Let's see, \$60,000,000 divided by 572,000 is... \$104.90. Woah, that is way, way off from the President's "math." Well, maybe he means that "Total Cumulative Donors" number. That's a lot bigger. Let's see, \$60,000,000 divided by 2,200,000 is... \$27.27. Okay then.

Um... maybe he used that "New Donors" number? Maybe? \$60,000,000 divided by 147,000 is... \$408.16.

If 0bama had a son, that’s how he would do math.

In fairness, they might be using the median average as opposed to the mean average.

The mean average (which is what most peeople assume when the see the word “average”) is simply \$60 million divided by 572,000.

The median average would be the amount of the donation that has an equal number that are smaller and larger. In this case the 286,000th highest/lowest dontaion would be the mean average.

The median can sometimes give a more accurate picture because it is not as skewed by extreme amounts.

For example if there are 5 houses on a block worth:

200,000
225,000
250,000
300,000
1,500,000

The mean average would be \$495,000
The median average would be \$250,000

In this case the median would more accurately reflect the typical home price.

However, given that campaign donations for individuals are capped, I’d think the mean average would be a better reflection of the truth, as there aren’t any huge contributions to skew the average.

Genius actually thought he could just print the money to pay off half the debt.

But why pay off debt when you can just flat out steal the money anyway?

no- They used Kenyan and Indonesian math, counting by sticks and chopsticks, resp.

After the Feds take a cut, that math seems right.

BTW, the \$54 average donation is the average for the whole campaign, but the 60 million and 574K donors are for the month they’re highlighting.

It’s not clear, but it is what it is.

200,000
225,000
250,000
300,000
1,500,000

The mean average would be \$495,000
The median average would be \$250,000
************************
mean or average = average of all values
median = midpoint between high and low values
median average = no such thing
495,000 = average (2475k/5)
850,000 = median (200k+1500k=1700k/2)

Not wanting to argue, AMPG, it’s just that the numbers you posted didn’t look right.
