Posted on 06/13/2012 2:45:49 PM PDT by Anitius Severinus Boethius
I apologize for the waste of bandwidth on this total vanity. I am writing under the pen name "Wilson Harp" and have just uploaded my first novel "Bright Horizons". It should go live sometime overnight on Amazon's Kindle store. I am just so relieved and excited to have made the final edit and be done with it.
Now back to the business of this site, let's get Barack Obama out of the White House.
It's 2042 and aliens have made contact with Earth. Marine Colonel Kyle Martin has been tasked with providing security for the signing of the treaty that will move mankind from lurking in isolation and ignorance and propel them out into the stars.
But another race of aliens has a different agenda for this meeting. Kyle and his Marines are caught in a firefight that leads them into a war against a savage and warlike race. With no allies and utterly outmatched in technology, how will Earth dare fight back? With skill, brains, and a will to survive.
As their foes ready the shackles of oppression, Kyle and his team race to harness every resource they have and a secret about Earth itself may hold the decisive key to victory.
Congratulations!! Glad to see the Marines will still be around in 2042. there is hope for the future.
Best wishes for great sales!
Congratulations, and best wishes for success. I’m afraid I don’t have Kindle, but maybe I can work something out with one of my kids who do.
Congrats and kudos.
Sounds like a plot I’d enjoy. I have 16 sf/fantasy on the shelves; if I like it I’ll give you a blurb.
You can download the Kindle App for the PC, Mac, or any smartphone.
We’ll forgive the vanity so long as you kick in some of the first day profits to Jim. ;)
Congratulations! I’ll be sure to nitpick all that stuff that you didn’t find in editing. :)
just kidding - congratulations!
Congratulations!! The plot sounds fascinating.... in fact, it sounds great enough to be made into a movie (hope that isn’t insulting to an author?!)
By the by, another author in the Kindle Store is selling books under the name Wilson Harp - those aren’t your books as well, are they?
I will buy it tomorrow. Sounds great.
Do you have a free chapter or 2 to sample?
If anyone wants to make a movie out of this story, I’m all for it!
Congrats!!!!! I’d love to one day be in your shoes!
Yes, I have also have three short stories up in a fantasy series called “Tales of the Silver Sword Inn”. The fourth should be coming out in the next several days and then I plan on two shorts a month, and collecting them into volumes eventually.
You signed up in 1999 just to post this????
Just kidding! Congratulations! I hope it succeeds fantastically!
Is there a lot of gratuitous sex and violence ?
1,256 book titles under Bright Horizons on Amazon. You should also give the ASIN.
Sorry, no sex. Was difficult not to make Colonel Martin an erotic vampire, since that seems to be what sells at present.
But there are a few fire fights and ships blowing up. I don’t know how gratutious it is, but there is a good amount of Marines being Marines.
Geoffrey Chaucer writes Robert Heinlein...
...if done well a work of gifted literature.
Yeah, it’s still in the “Publishing” mode right now. I have an ASIN (B008BAL10K), but it’s not live yet. Should be able to provide a direct link by late this evening. I realized I may have jumped the gun on the announcement, but it was more of a “It’s done!” impulse to post.
I will have the link on the thread as soon as I get the e-mail from Amazon.
WOW, ASB. You have a right to a vanity post. Kudos and may you have continuing success with more writing in the future.
Best wishes and good luck!
I’m very happy for you, and I hope your novel will be very popular.
Did you self-publish or did you get picked up by a publishing house?
I self-published, but I hope that no one holds that against me. I worked hard to make sure it is as professional as anything that comes out of one of the major houses. You only have one shot to make a first impression.
About the possible success of your book.
You used the pen name “Wilson Harp?”
That alone should be enough to “seal” the deal.
Did you at least get a professional critique? Because you are right about first impressions.
I’ve met a lot of self-published authors who think they can write. They desperately need an honest critique.
Would love to know how this works out for you. Any nibbles on the short stories?
Had six beta readers including fans of the genre and those who don’t care for the genre. Those whose entire review efforts were “I liked it” or “It was ok” were not brought into my circle of series readers. LOL
Yeah, I’ve had a few sales a day on each of my shorts, trying to build a bigger base for them each day, but sales are steady and climbing.
Sounds like a good read! I’ll check it out and D/L to my Kindle, to read when I finish Limbaugh’s new book....
Self-publishing is no longer something to be ashamed of. You will keep more per reader than if you were represented by a publisher. If you attract readers, you will receive offers.
Are you aware of “Wool”? Started as a blog, went to self-published, and received a movie offer. I am nearly finished with the Omnibus and it is easy to see why it succeeded.
Writing a novel is a tremendous undertaking. It requires stamina and craft. You have every reason to be proud of yourself.
Am buying hubby a Kindle for Christmas, so I will read it after that.
Very cool!! Congratulations ASB!
Yeah, Hugh Howey scored a golden ticket with “Wool”, and he is one of the nicest most generous writers on many of the self-publish boards. No one deserves the success more than Hugh.
I also aspire to be a writer. Congrats. I will buy the book tonight. Any thoughts on how to self publish?
Best thing I found was to read, read, read at various sites where self-publishers hang out. My favorite place is the Writer’s Cafe at Kindleboards.
Here is a link to that forum:
I know someone who self-published a novel and wound up being interviewed on TV stations all over the US and even had book-signings. The author even won an award for best new novelist. The book was even considered for a movie, but it never got that far. Still, it shows that a good author will go far if your audience can find you.
Well I sure hope everyone enjoys it. I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for overnight success, but I will keep writing. I have about a dozen book ideas in many genres and I will keep plying my trade and sharpening my craft.

I will only read it if it has a happy ending. :-)
He kills Edward with a KA-BAR through the heart, thus ending the scourge of sparkly vampires for all time.
