When Adults Are Victims of Tween Bullies (Much psycho-babble included)
Live Science ^ | June 22, 2012 | Sheila Eldred

When a kids see other kids being bullied, current teaching advises them to speak up for the victim. But when the victim is an adult, the common response is to freeze.

"I think that's the next wave we're going to see," said Edie Raether, a psychotherapist and author of "Stop Bullying Now." "It is David and Goliath in reverse. Kids run in packs....and an adult is never in either pack or camp and thus it is more risky to speak up...It is a confusing situation, and a confused mind is frozen, passive."

Raether, who speaks internationally on bullying intervention, intends to expand on her book in its next edition, to include the challenges unique to adult victims of child bullies.

In the aftermath of the bullying of a 68-year-old bus monitor that went viral this week via YouTube, the spotlight on victims of bullying has expanded to include adults.

At least four seventh- and eighth-grade boys riding the bus operated by the Greece Central School District, a suburban district in upstate New York, brought Karen Klein to tears with their taunts. The 10-minute video shows the boys poking her, teasing her about her weight, threatening to egg her house, speculating about who she might rape, and talking about putting a knife in her stomach.

While many viewers of the YouTube video were appalled (a fund has been set up to send her on vacation), some experts were not as shocked. Adults who monitor buses, recess, and lunch are often victimized because of their proximity to the behavior, and because their positions often don't carry the full authority of other adults at school, like teachers and administrators, they said...

I feel really sad for this bus monitor, but am still trying to figure out why she was on the bus.
If she was there to monitor behavior she failed.
Why was she on the bus in the first place?

“Edie Raether, a psychotherapist”

Right. And this idiot is still their guru.

she was put there to be a mino (monitor in name only). as if the sight of a grownup would make kids behave better... might have been true yesteryear, no more!

A 68 year old grandmother? They couldn’t find a fit six foot tall 20-something in this economy?

Vet, agreed. Plenty of people out of work.
Hi, the thing is in yesteryear a monitor would not have been needed.
When I road the bus in high school, behave or walk - pretty simple.
Homeschooling seems so much better, everyday.

Sorry if my comments are not politically correct - but I see ridiculousness all around.

An old woman doing the useless job of sitting on a bus, to collect a few bucks from the local school district. May possibly be expected to control 11 year-olds, but lets herself be punching bag instead

A bunch of suburban brats who are behaving like a pack of dogs simply because they think they can get away with it

Americans have turned granny into a millionaire because her daughter thinks she needs a “vacation.”

Sorry - I can’t find anyone in the whole story for whom I have any respect.

We never had such a thing. The driver was the monitor. I would never work with kids nowadays, too many risks and ways to get sued.

When did they start installing so-called “monitors” on school buses? I graduated high school in 1978 and I never saw one.

The Prussian school system adopted by the US is designed to create mob mentality. They want uniformity in thinking and “peer pressure” to force the one allowed way to think on any subject—like sodomy is cool.

All curricula is laced with Marxist ideology-—Buckley noted it in “God and Man at Yale” in 51. He noticed all the Atheists/collectivists/group thinkers pouring out of all the elite Universities which used the same Marxist textbooks.

Lincoln would have never ran in a pack as a kid. He learned to think for himself. He had a REAL education and was not a product of brainwashing/conditioning Pavlovian/Skinner-laced textbooks.

Problem with Dewey’s school system-—they kicked out God and Moral Absolutes (McGuffey Readers which taught morality and Bible quotes). Up until the 30’s, all public schools taught Virtue-—a necessary element in a Free Republic which is taught to young children.

Young children are learning to be animals-—act like animals because they removed God. Without God, we are just all animals like Marx says.

We need to get back Classical Education which taught Virtue. (Evil is vilified and Good is admired). They do the opposite in schools today-—they say “Sodomy is Good and Christians are bigots and haters”. It is a lie and throws out the best ethical system man has ever had-—Christian Ethics which was the paradigm in the US for several hundred years.

Nothing has proven greater than Christian Ethics in the history of man—and we have studied every conceivable ethical system in the world. Christianity is responsible for ridding the world of the idea that slavery is good—pederasty is good, child sacrifice is good, homosexuality is good. Their ethics created a “flourishing” people—and I mean that in the deeper teleological sense which produces happiness.

Chasing the priest out of the classroom didn’t usher in the age of reason.

Good Question. I am from a similar school district in NY State. "Make Work" is the NY Gov't motto. One look at granny, and I saw just another ass on a seat just showing up to collect a local Gov't paycheck. It doesn't mean those brats should disrespect her though - 2 separate issues.

Indeed. If I had so much as back-talked a janitor or school secretary, much less a teacher, I’d have received at least two butt-whippings, one from the principal and one from my father.

The Catholic Church made possible the Age of Reason. The German Postmodernists chased Reason (and God) out of all the public classrooms.

We are heading into Marx’s dystopia if we don’t do a 180 degree turn.

A 68 year old grandmother?

Yes, and you would think these kids would respect her as they would their own grandmother. BTW, Ronald Reagan was a 69 years old grandfather when elected president.

Regardless of her age, those kids should not be talking to anyone on the school bus like that. It is sad to see the decline in our society.

That’s what my husband said, too. Obviously she had no power and the brats knew that.

It does show our dysfunction as a society from many angles. The other angle I see is the current breathless reeducation campaign in schools against fat people. I found it interesting the little monsters honed on her ‘disgusting’ fat body. One hoped she’d die of diabetes.

My first bus driver could paralyze the whole lot of us by simply ‘looking at us’ in his overhead mirror.

The second was a tiny woman...who had a lead pipe propped beside her left foot.

We were very well behaved children.

I guarantee you that most of the kids in that video do not have a father in their home.

THAT is the key to a great number of our social problems.

No one has power over today’s kids.

Put a professional wrestler on the bus, and if he lays a hand on one of those kids it would be his ass.

The kids know this.

School Boards are frightened to death to take a kid off the bus or ban them from riding.
Horror of Horrors, the parents will attack the school board.

Parents are out working they don’t have the time to take kids to school, or watch them if they are suspended.School is their baby sitter.

The tail is wagging the dog, because the dog hasn’t the courage to stop it.

In the 40s and 50s being sent to the principals office was right next to a hanging. The words “reform school” were uttered in whispers and made you go pale. I ended up in military school, simply because of my attitude problem. I really didn’t need major adjustments, but they were available if needed, LOL

It wouldn’t do any good. The kids aren’t stupid. They know you can put 6 linebackers on the bus armed with commercial grade whips and the kids know that if you so much as speak to them in a raised voice, you would be sued into oblivion.

The grandma is not the problem. The problem is that the children have all the power because the federal government and the current PC climate has given the children all the power. They have no fear.

This is why inner city high school punks can beat up a teacher in class with impunity. Goes to the heart of this article about teens bullying adults.

Of course kids can bully adults, because it is a one-way fight. If the adult stands up for himself in any way, even verbally, at best there is a lawsuit or firing, at worst some kid will claim you molested them, and you you are presumed guilty on that charge.

We need to go back to a power balance where the kids are in fear of the adults and not the other way around. But guess what. It isn’t going to happen. PC is entrenched and this will only get worse.

I so hate modern life and the ridiculous nonsensical culture we currently have. Up is down and dark is light.

If we can’t find some way to get back to Judeo-Christian moral basics, we are completely doomed. The kids running the asylum and keeping adults in fear because the kids have all the power, is just one symptom of the liberal idiocy of modern American culture.

It is absurd. Everything liberals touch falls to ruin.
