Incredible 3D Stereoscopic Civil War Photos

Stereoscopic images basically involve taking 2 or more static images, from slightly different angles, to create a 3D effect that tricks the eye into noticing the depth of field, angles and perspective of the image. Thus, it’s possible to take a flat image and create 3D depth to it. When applied to older photographs, it’s an amazing technique, because it brings life to history. Take for example, these Civil War photographs that use a stereoscopic effect!

So, one could take an old stereoscopic photo card and scan each image then create an animated gif in Photoshop that tweens the two images as a loops and voila?

Yeah ... I think if the scans are done at two slightly different angles, it could work. The two images are then created into a .gif image.

Here is some more info on Wiki (called wiggle stereoscopy) ...

Amazing is right. I used to have a stereo camera. May have to try this effect with the photos I took.

Okay about stereos optic effect. But did anyone notice in the third pic, that the army set up a tent basically in FRONT of a canon? WTF?

I remember the old Stereoscopes like this. Played with my grandmother's all the time. A better system that doesn't vibrate.

Now that you mention it, I went back and looked at that.
They didn’t follow the rules,,,”always treat a firearm as if it is loaded”,”never point your weapon at something you don’t want to destroy or kill”, etc....

“never point your weapon at something you don’t want to destroy or kill”

Most likely the tent was unused except to disguise the emplacement. As well as hitching post for horses.

Actually, the story is that the unit with the cannon sneaked up on the enemy encampment while they were enamored with the view. The photograph was taken just before the order to fire was given, and the enemy was destroyed.

Glad I could set the record straight.

The civile war wasn’t very long ago at all.

Only a life time and a half ago.

It’s amazing how corrupt, controlling and intrusive our government became in such a short time.

Can anyone imagine how bad it will be in 30 years?

Unfortunately ... I can't seem to find credits or background descriptions for most of these photographs.

The second photo (Union officer on horse) appears to be General Tecumseh Sherman; see

http://old-photos.blogspot.com/2007/08/general-william-tecumseh-sherman.html

Appreciate any other insight or feedback from other FReeper Civil War buffs who could provide some info about these photos ...

G’day!
