It is incredibly tragic, almost hard to imagine.

8 million of them have Hepatitis C.

According to this site http://www2.hawaii.edu/~dewolfe/Epidemic.html the prevalence is even higher and the spread is mainly due to use of non-sterile equipment at hospitals and at the dentist, using the same latex gloves for more than one patient etc.

Thanks for the answer. Beyond horrible. I have had two good friends (so far) die from Hep C and it was neither quick nor painless.

are lots of them homosexuals or mainline drugs? Or is it just re-using needles for medical use?

My guess is all of the above.
