HiTech RedNeck job search vanity: GERMANTOWN MD?!? Anybody near there???
Me | 7/12/2012 | HiTech RedNeck

Dear Freepers,

HiTech RedNeck struck out on the two other jobs whose locales were inquired about earlier: Madison WI and Bentonville AR. While a formidable challenger, HTRN had even more formidable competitors and did not win out.

Stinging off of the Wisconsin loss (which had looked a lot like a win until the very end) HTRN signed up for two new job boards: corp-corp.com and engineerjobs.com. They looked rinky dink compared to the classy, complex Monster and Dice, but they were ranked high by Google, and I was thinking any new ports in a storm. Well, very shortly HTRN's email and phone began to hop! 4, 5, 6 nibbles a day. Where were these guys all my life???

Well, it turns out that one contract house wants programmers in my specialty in Germantown, MD. The client is a Fortune 500 business that makes office products, and is selling things to Washington, DC. They want to interview me quickly and then, if all goes well, they will want an answer 24 hours from the time I hear about an offer which would probably be late next week.

So I figured I had better do my homework now. If this materializes (although I am busy talking with others now) it will be a bird in hand which today is worth about a dozen in the bush. Thinking NOT of permanently moving to the area, but of setting up in a business lodging like extended stay (maybe a cheap motel for a couple weeks till I get paid, then I can expand my budget). The prices in that area seem moderately high, and the rush job makes me want to raise my eyebrows a bit, but the client seems nobody to complain about. Also it's a liberal armpit of America, not that I've come to politick there, but still....

Anyhow, any insights on what this would be like. Any special warnings. Should I wave to Barack Obama?

Yo won’t be too close to DC, in the outer suburbs. It’s fairly expensive but not too bad out at Germantown. You could stay in Fredrick and drive down. Should be cheap hotels in the Rockville/Gaaithersburg area, on 355, and then be driving against the traffic which can be heavy.

Germantown is outside the Beltway but has become essentially a suburb of DC.

I moved out of that area a few months ago. Things are VERY expensive compared to most of the states...taxes, lots of traffic nightmares, insufferable libs all over the place, whacky lib county government and so forth. Germantown has a lot poor people who have government chits to live there so... Good luck as long you’re going with open eyes.

Although Germantown is in Maryland it is on the way to the much more normal(conservative) part. You could easily stay north of there and find something reasonable”ish”. check out Craigs list for Frederick Md. or the Washington DC one for lodging possibilities.

No need to be N.V.’ous (pun intended)

But I was flabbergasted. These two have served me up more stuff than Dice and Monster put together ever did. Warning: if you aren’t a corporation then you can’t contract literally corp to corp, but other options are open on corp-corp. Understand what they are and how paid (W2 may be net 15, 1099 net 30).

One thing I did that seemed to help recruiters like my resume better, was add a section dedicated to programming accomplishments in the particular area of concentration I was aiming at. That was then followed by the normal chronological stuff. I did something analogous marketing myself as a computer administrator. It seemed to help a lot to break ice where some of my best work was several years in the past.

Of course I hope you get the job, just knowing you from here makes me sure you deserve it!

My kid just had to move to MD from VA (sigh, double sigh, triple sigh) around that same area. Well, in fact MD is not very large, it is just sort of convoluted in shape.

And yes, it is run by stinking liberal dems, it puts New York to shame. It is basically the CA of the east coast.

But, what can you do? My kid had to move there to keep her job, you might have to move there to get a job.

We get enough folks like you and her there, perhaps MD can have a tea party revolution! (Right after NJ where I am, I’m sure!)

But MD is nice country, they have kind of a big foodie culture, lots of churches from what I saw when I was briefly there, CRAB CAKES! RAVENS!

I give you the same advice I gave my own child, I say go for it! (And vote the straight republican line!)

If you’re lucky your employer will have a contract with Department of Energy - a bottomless pit of money for contractors.

DOE has a large facility in Germantown.

Virginia is within commuting distance but traffic sucks.

Yo to the Crab Cake State... I had no idea there were so many Freepers in Maryland. Anyhow I’m looking for info in a hurry about Germantown, which I might be getting a job offer in after years of being out of work. If this happens I want to get situated as advantageously as possible. And you do have a cool state flag, the only one I’ve seen that looks like a racing flag. Thanks in advance.

Oops, sorry about the double ping to y’all. FR returned a post error the first time I tried, and I assumed it failed.

What is your current specialty. Do you know NI Labview? Do you have an EE background? Look at Schneider Electric in many different states. Pick a state then see what they have. They are snatching up the power management industry at a pretty good clip.

Michelle Malkin used to live there but she might have been a conservative aberration :-)

You're just over the bridge from one of the most expensive parts of Virginia, if you'd prefer to not live in Maryland but that area of the corridor is now pretty expensive no matter what.
