HiTech RedNeck job search vanity: GERMANTOWN MD?!? Anybody near there???
Me | 7/12/2012 | HiTech RedNeck

Dear Freepers,

HiTech RedNeck struck out on the two other jobs whose locales were inquired about earlier: Madison WI and Bentonville AR. While a formidable challenger, HTRN had even more formidable competitors and did not win out.

Stinging off of the Wisconsin loss (which had looked a lot like a win until the very end) HTRN signed up for two new job boards: corp-corp.com and engineerjobs.com. They looked rinky dink compared to the classy, complex Monster and Dice, but they were ranked high by Google, and I was thinking any new ports in a storm. Well, very shortly HTRN's email and phone began to hop! 4, 5, 6 nibbles a day. Where were these guys all my life???

Well, it turns out that one contract house wants programmers in my specialty in Germantown, MD. The client is a Fortune 500 business that makes office products, and is selling things to Washington, DC. They want to interview me quickly and then, if all goes well, they will want an answer 24 hours from the time I hear about an offer which would probably be late next week.

So I figured I had better do my homework now. If this materializes (although I am busy talking with others now) it will be a bird in hand which today is worth about a dozen in the bush. Thinking NOT of permanently moving to the area, but of setting up in a business lodging like extended stay (maybe a cheap motel for a couple weeks till I get paid, then I can expand my budget). The prices in that area seem moderately high, and the rush job makes me want to raise my eyebrows a bit, but the client seems nobody to complain about. Also it's a liberal armpit of America, not that I've come to politick there, but still....

Anyhow, any insights on what this would be like. Any special warnings. Should I wave to Barack Obama?

Do have a bachelors in EE, but it’s old and dusty. I switched to an emphasis in software after about half a year in industry. Have a masters in CS from one of the Ivies. Specialty Unix, some Linux, C, some C++, lots and lots of shell, SQL and database interfacing, administering processes, software, and machines under Unix and Linux. See my lede story for the rest. This place wants a C++ programmer.

They will certainly take a hard look at you. C or any variation thereof gets a call. They hire any age as long as they can learn new code. Visual is becoming more and more prevalent. I hope your new opportunity works out but just in case, I would look at Schneider. They are growing.

BTW this goes for anyone looking for any skill background. Just go through the states one by one and select “all” jobs.

Good Luck

I can’t tell you anything about Germantown. What I CAN tell you is that this is the People’s Republic of Maryland—ruled by entrenched Demovik apparatchik, a clique of corruptocrats that make Trotsky look like a moderate. Good luck.

You don’t want to live in the Freak State ,,, 0’Malley is worse than 0’Bama ,,,, currently Md. is 40.7 billion in debt ,,, that’s $7,500.00 per each citizen and 0’Malley will impliment Commiecare in this state . He’s chased all the millionaires out with a millionaires tax and now his sights are on folks who make 100k . Currently 10% of the population are illegals and there are 3 counties loaded with minorities that carry all the elections thanks to recent redistricting . Maryland is one of the most corrupt states in the country ,,, you really don’t want to live here
and that’s coming from a decendant of the original settlers in 1634 . I’m 67 and plan to move from here very soon . You have gotten a fair warning and you can take heed or come here to help expand and support this nanny state .

Maryland is a beautiful state to drive through but you might not want to live in a communist society .

What I might do, though I’d feel like a rat, is to go ahead and keep applying for other jobs even if I take this one. The logistics would make long term presence in Maryland awkward for me, but beggars can’t be choosy.

Germantown is in Montgomery County, a suburb adjacent to the western side of DC. Montgomery County is very expensive but Germantown is not as bad as Bethesda or Potomac.

Maryland is a great place to live. It has a moderate climate and is close to both the Chesapeake Bay and the Ocean. There are scenic mountains close by. It is close to DC and the close to the inner suburbs. There are a lot of things to do. There are great seafood restaurants and other great restaurants throughout Mont Co, DC and Northern Virginia. There is also a wide range cultural events in the D.C. area. There are also many intelligent, friendly people to get to know.

The only bad thing about Montgomery County and Maryland is the politicians. They are almost all liberals and waste taxpayer money. There are high taxes and poor quality government services.

Be careful where you locate. Traffic in the area is terrible. You can easily end up with a commute of over an hour each way.

As I do not know who you are, I was not able to name you as the Schneider employee referring me. (I stated the source as anonymous bulletin board.) But I was able to select all US locations and an interest area of IT, and I successfully threw a resume over the transom to them. One of dozens that have gone out over the last couple of weeks.

It’s not the crab, which could be obtained anywhere from NY to LA. (Mostly LA and NC.)

Or the shrimp, FTM

It’s the way it’s cooked. MDers know crabs like no-one does; we adore crabs like NO-one adores ANY food (and I mean that). And doing shrimp the same way as the crabs is genius.

,,,, yes 40.7 billion in debt ,,, and if you don’t believe it ,,,, type in MARYLAND DEBT CLOCK in your search engine ,,, but first sit down . When B. Ehrlich (R) left the office he had a 2 billion surplus . Maryland is an anti-business ,,, pro welfare ,,, illegal immigrant ,,, sanctuary nanny state . Govt. handouts from cradle to grave and the dwindling working tax payers are expected to always pay more . Now the current redistricting map assures the Rats can always retain control .

The State recently stuck the counties with an unfunded teachers pension. Now the Counties will have to raise taxes tpo pay for that.

O’Mally is killing us.

A notable advantage of Germantown (Montgomery Co.) is its proximity to Frederick Co. (better), Washington Co. (even better), Loudoun Co. VA (better still), and and the 3 counties of the Eastern Panhandle of WVa (best of all). The latter two are reachable via White’s Ferry (cool ride) and the Potomac Bridge Harper’s Ferry. There’s also a commuter rail between Martinsburg WV and Germantown. You can work in G’town and be totally away from Monkey Co. and DC in minutes.

If you have a varied background just go state to state with all jobs selected. Do not confine yourself to IT. The jobs all take a learning curve. I know numerous folks who have great potential in many fields but limit themselves. Go For It! is the attitude toward any field.

Not sure what this “go state to state” business is. The job application form asked for locations. I highlighted all US ones. Bogged down the browser for a minute but it worked.

Germantown is on 270, the Tech Corridor. Lots of tech and contractors.

Maryland is a corrupt one party state and that is that.

That’s due to BaltCity, PG County, Montgomery County...but you can escape to Frederick County to the North and commute down 270....There are pockets of conservatism, in Carroll County or way out West in the mountains where I live.
