According to this article, summer vacation makes children dumber and fatter. The article even goes on to say that its the poor and racial minorities who are hit the hardest.
But dont worry. Theres a proposal to have the federal government get involved to solve this problem. Supporters of the program claim that it would cost less than $2,000 per child per summer. Of course supporters of these kinds of government programs always understate the cost, so I can easily see such a program costing far more than that amount.
Funny, but when I was a child in the 1970s and early 1980s, I never had any trouble coming across reading material. From Judy Blume to Paddington to Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators from dinosaur books to encyclopedia articles to Archie comic digests and Richie Rich even the Sears Christmas Wishbook made for great reading fun. And yet somehow, I managed to have access to all of this reading material without any help from the federal government.

Maybe "Obama Youth" could work.

They just want control over American children for 12 months, instead of 10.
Easier to indoctrinate them and all that.
Gotcha.

When I was a child in the 50s and 60s, there were lawns to mow ($2 each - we weren’t union..) and vacant-lot baseball (just a ball, a bat, and shared gloves - no helmets, no umpires, not an adult in sight to ‘supervise’) and riding bicycles without gearing-up like a medieval knight (”be home by suppertime!”)— and outside of the odd policeman waving at us as he drove past, not a gummint official in sight....
(sigh)

Isn’t Orzag the same guy who wants to make voting mandatory?
Parents should help kids find appropriate summer activities. Unfortunately, mam
Many children are let to do whatever they want, and that means tv and video games.
The gvt. should not step in to fill this gap! Parents need to step up and do their job.
As I type this, one ofmy teens is outsmarting, one is touring a nationally know physics lab, and one is working on some math. Yes, we are weird. Our kids actually DO things during vacation!
How about collecting $2,000 less in taxes per child so families might once again be able to afford a family vacation...
Oh, right, forgot, Daddy and Daddy government wants to control this.
Sigh ... Another reason why we homeschool!
Yep, I remember the days when our Moms would literally kick us out of the house with, “I don’t want to see you back here until dinnertime.”
After reading the Bloomberg article, I reviewed the link for “Smarter Summers”. This organization is providing “quality” summer experiences for children. Here is an example per their own blog:
Summary: Students reenacting scenes from the movie “The Hunger Games”. I have no doubt this will close the academic gap for STEM classes. /s
When I was a kid, my friends and I used to do that sort of thing - but we never needed any bureaucrats to “help” us.
Little Obama brown shirt training sessions! Don’t let ‘em do it!
