Second, it isn't a 'banana clip' or even a 'banana magazine'. This is a banana magazine.
So is this I guess.
An AR's standard magazine generally will hold 15 to 30 rounds tops. You can purchase a Beta C magazine (drum magazine) that will hold 100 rounds but from the images, that is not what he had. It was a 30 round magazine.
Drum Magazine-
Image from the scene, note the gun in the top right. He didn't have a drum magazine.
ping 41 for a LOL
I think it’s next to impossible to make a reliable 100 round clip for an AR-15. The Army went away from 30 round clips because they do not feed reliably. It takes more spring pressure to load more rounds, Hooks Law and all that. Come up with a simple cheap design that maintains uniform pressure and you will become rich. The twenty round clip works more of less perfectly. Tape two together, bottom to bottom and you can quick switch and then grab another 40 round magazine.
What did he have big pockets? I mean Assault weapons are pretty hard to hide!
I understand he had both a drum mag and a regular magazine.
The drum jammed, he switched to the regular, but could not clear the ham, having never had the oppotunity to get in range time, thanks to a quick-thinking gun club owner.
Well I haven’t heard your theory yet. Were you there? Has the police said what happened yet? Not theories! Pal!
Someone yesterday posted a great comment I've already used with success. Why is it he surrendered to the police without putting up a fight? Could it be because they were armed and he didn't want to get shot?
I’d place my bet on a cheap defective after-market drum mag being the source of the jam.
Hard to say why this nutjob took any of the actions he did. Sufficed to say, he is miserable piece of trash who should be prosecuted quickly and, when found guilty, should be promptly executed.
The 'reason' they are even there is that it is a FIRE CODE regulation. The fact that many customers use it to exit more quickly to the parking lot is why there are no 'alarms' on them. Although I have seen many Emergency Exits which also have a sign proclaiming that they are 'alarmed', the ones I have seen in theaters do not.
But... I don't get around that much. So...I am sure there are some.
These are highly reliable:

Thank you, thank you thank you. The whole clip/magazine thing is one of my pet peeves.
The media thinks everything but a flintlock is an automatic machine gun....
Heh-heh! Great post!
Their 100 rounders are backordered.
60 rounders are available. Personally, I think the
60 mags are a better selection for storage and weight considerations.
Not to quibble about details but that link leads to neither tear gas nor a grenade. It a spray can with a nozzle that locks open and discharges pepper spray. It's almost exactly like an insecticide "bug bomb". A CS grenade is an incendiary device and disperses a gas which is lethal when concentrated in confined spaces. It also can set fire to a structure, reference the WACO massacre. It is a serious piece of military hardware.
The main stream media has built up an unbelievable amount of detail about weapons, ammunition, SWAT gear, explosives, and incendiaries, nearly all of it is speculative and largely bovine excrement. To read the media version of events it would seem that one can order up any number of dangerous military/police munitions just by a GOOGLE search of the net. It is a unvarnished attempt to scare the crap out of the general public and get some momentum behind the ever present gun control agenda forever simmering just below the surface of left wing liberal policy.
The perpetrator of this criminal spree was a miserable poser with delusions of grandeur and was successful largely because the liberal democrats governing Colorado allow local governments to contravene the statewide CCW law thereby creating free-fire zones for criminal mischief. If the CCW law were universally in force I believe we would see a rapid decline in these "ducks in a rain barrel" shoot-em-ups.

GtG
There were no drum mags found at the scene or used by this idiot. Every picture I’ve seen of the AR, every picture from the inside of the theater, all of the evidence points to the use of standard 20 round magazines.
My bet’s on garbage milsurp .223 as the reason for the jam.
