Syria's chemical weapons arsenal

There is a degree of panic, and rightly so, over whether the Syrian tyrant Basher al Assad will use chemical weapons against either his own people or foreign attackers. His regime has this week threatened to do the latter, thus finally confirming what was long suspected but never openly admitted, that Syria possesses chemical weapons. It is believed to have believed to have mustard gas as well as nerve agents such as tabun, sarin and VX. The fear is either that the Assad regime uses them or that they fall into the hands of Hezbollah, al Qaeda or other Islamic terrorist groups.

...

No-one in the western media seems remotely curious about how Syria has managed to arm itself to the teeth with them beneath the radar of international scrutiny.

...

That, however, was back in 2002. In 2003 the US, Britain and others went to war in Iraq to make the world safe from Saddam Hussein and his pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. Ever since, however, we have been told that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and the proof of that is that none was ever found – surely one of the most profoundly illogical and imbecilic formulations ever to have fallen from human lips.

Very interesting information concerning how Syria acquired such a large stockpile of Chemical WMD. She adds some new information about US troops finding suspicious caches only later to discover everything removed.

During the Iraq War to remove Saddam Hussein, FreeRepublic would occasionally get posts from troops in theater. A couple of times they reported finding WMD. So apparently once they reported the possible WMD to their commanders, someone else (either locals or UNSCOM), came in quickly to clean the scene.

At any rate, Syria needed no help with its Chemical program. They could have utilized help however with their Biological and Nuclear programs.

The world may soon be getting a rude awakening.

These are probably Saddams WMD’s. After Bush threatened Saddam with war, I remember being at the Queen’s birthday party at STRATCOM and heard everyone talking the wmd’s being moved into Syria. Of course we knew they moved them & that is why we could not find very much.

If the dictator has his back to the wall—he might well use them on his enemies or anyone who might invade.

And it looks as if one of the reasons Syria now possesses perhaps the worlds largest functional Chemical stockpile, is because it also absorbed what it could from Iraq. This may also explain why the western liberal elites were surprised by Russia's defense of Syria. Lots of old Russian toys still in Syria, apparently.

So now we know how DC go itself into such a horrific jam in Syria (UK is calling for a post-Assad occupation force of 300,000 now).

Syria: West 'could deploy 300,000 troops following regime collapse'

After Gulf War #1, Saddam still had enough WMD, that they required industrial scale operations to properly dispose of them.

Syria's chemical weapons, and beyond

Excerpts follow

Operations at the end of the First Gulf War provide a sense of the scale of the chemical weapon problem. The U.N. Special Commission supervised the destruction of tens of thousands of filled and unfilled chemical munitions, 295 metric tons of mustard gas, and 116 metric tons of tabun and sarin nerve gases. Even with Iraqi cooperation of a grudging sort, finding, collecting, and destroying these items took years.

For Saddam's Iraq, today's Syria, and other nations that have envisaged waging tactical chemical warfare, one has to think in industrial-scale terms. The chemical stocks are likely measured in hundreds of tons, distributed to multiple sites for strategic and safety reasons, and protected by units particularly loyal to the regime. Disposing of them is likely to require industrial-scale destruction operations that would require industrial facilities and time.

The urgency of securing such materials during operations was highlighted by an incident in the second Iraq War.

In October 2004, the interim Iraqi government reported that nearly 400 tons of high-quality explosives under International Atomic Energy Agency supervision prior to the U.S. invasion had vanished from an industrial facility at Al Qa'qaa during the American occupation. In 2003, the Al-Qa'qaa industrial area covered about 28 square kilometers (10.8 square miles) with more than 1,000 structures engaged in multiple military-related activities. Within the facility, the IAEA had identified and secured with its seals bunkers that contained about 195 metric tons of HMX, 141 metric tons of RDX, and 5.8 metric tons of PETN - all high-grade military explosives with dual-use potential for explosive compression in a nuclear device (which was why they had been under IAEA supervision).

American forces fought through the area in the first week of April 2003, dispersing whatever Iraqi forces had guarded the facility. The site was unguarded until the 75th Exploitation Task Force arrived at the end of May. In the intervening weeks, the explosives, along with virtually everything else of value in the facility, had disappeared with successive waves of looters - many of whom arrived with cranes and trucks. Quite possibly, the looters were insiders who knew what they were taking and exactly who might be interested in high-quality, dual-use explosives.

Syria has been in the WMD business at least since they got their butts handed to them in 1973. They’ve had help from every evil government that graces the planet. Even German industrialists that want to finish the job for Hitler have helped them.

This is not news, it’s practically ancient history and the fact it’s being brought up like this just boggles my mind and must have every Israeli crying at the world’s Alzheimer’s disease.

Unfortunately the Israeli's are busy scrambling for gas masks right now.

Gas mask production not sufficient for entire public

As are the Jordanians.

And as are the Turkish.

Agree. And even now, after all the “Bush Lied” crap we had to put up with, I’m hoping proof will emerge that Saddam had WMD after all, just like Colin Powell said, and that he hid them in Syria.

The problem is that they cannot admit that just about every liberal, progressive, DINO and RINO lied about the WMD in Iraq. It would destroy what little credibility they still have. It could actually bring down the entire house of cards they have built with their DINO/RINO con game.

Thus, we have a crisis in Syria. That evil Assad has crossed the line. He actually mentioned that he has chemical WMD and he will use it against foreign invasion. I suppose the entire world thinks the US, Russia and China will never use their vast stores of WMD.

"just like Colin Powell said"

Colin Powell is a treasonous poltroon.

If he were a real man, he would speak up right now about the Iraq WMD's going to Syria, exonerating Bush (and himself, by the way).

What a giant disappointment Powell turned out to be!

James Clapper, said it linked the disappearance of Iraqi WMD with the huge number of Iraqi trucks entering Syria before and during the US invasion; based on satellite imagery, it assessed that these trucks contained missiles and WMD components. Shipments to Syria were supervised by Saddam’s most loyal intelligence agents....

If the MSM acknowledged those shipments, they would have to acknowledge Geo. Bush was right.
They will never admit that.

Also, some CW artillery shells were discovered but the MSM discounted them 'Aw, those old things?'.

On several occasions WMDs were actually fired at our troops. But since the terrorists did not know how deploy the weapons successfully, they did little or no harm to our troops. However, it destroyed the the argument that the terrorists, and Saddam, had no WMDs left. The critics of the war dismissed the sarin gas projectiles fired as degraded leftovers. Which only means they were not 100% as volatile as they were in prime condition. Which means they were still dangerous. But many of the critics seriously argue that Hussein NEVER!!! had any WMDs against all evidence including the massacre of the Kurds in 1988.

Thanks for the info.

Thought the world was going mad when the MSM claimed a tyrant who had tons of WMD, that the UN spent years destroying, did not have WMD.

And of course the world has gone mad. The Huff Post has a blog post calling for intervention into Syria based on humanitarian issues. Found it on a Syrian search. Well, the progressos lied to themselves before, good chances are they are lying to themselves again.
