Does God Deserve Credit for Gabrielle Douglas’ Olympic Gold Record
Examiner | August 3, 2012 | Kevin Fobbs

As a record shattering Olympian, gold medalist Gabrielle (Gabby) Douglas leapt into history as the first American athlete to win the prestigious team gold and the all-around gold medal in the same Olympics. What is equally monumental is that she prepared herself for the arduous competitions by drawing upon her strength from God. In the midst of what has to be tremendous pressure, she has always maintained her faith and presence of mind to reach out to the Lord.

Sounds familiar?

Of course football sensation and devout Christian quarterback Tim Tebow does it as well, and many national comedians and liberal political pundits have attacked him for his faithful practice of kneeling on the gridiron and giving thanks to God. His righteous practice has accomplished very noble purposes and caused him to be the target of vilification as well. First, he has shown his strength to honor his creator and thereby be a Christian role model for other young athletes. His commitment on the football field helps them to not be afraid to show that God has prepared their spirit and heart for the competition of the day.

Secondly, Tebows practice demonstrates a true Christian ministry that parents can point their children to as an example of standing for your faith, even when adversity and cruel pointless comments attempt to diminish their young spirits.

Does God deserve credit for Gabrielle Douglas Olympic gold record?

It appears that Gabby believes that he does. In fact, before the beginning of her All-Around competition, Gabby tweeted to the whole world, "Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things He does for me."

Yes, Gabby sent out a message that is as clear as her faith is pure and her determination is focused, that the Lord, ...

God deserves credit in all things...win or lose. We just seem to like to thank Him for when we win.

How about we let this young gal enjoy the rewards of her hard work, and pay off the IRS. After all I have read she is only 16.

I love watching Gabby - poetry in motion.

What a role model for individual perseverance and success. Hear that, Obummer?

Jesus had some not irrelevant comments:

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Not saying these people who pray in public are hypocrites. Do find it odd that I’ve seldom seen Christ’s input on the subject discussed when the subject comes up.

Why do they say the value of a gold medal is $25,000.? Does it have that much gold in it...that would be about a pound?

For a while longer it will still be safe to publically give God the glory. But if good men do nothing, most of us will live to see the day when such an unguarded exclamation could cost an athlete her sponsorships, her place on the team...or worse. For the average person it will be even worse. But only if good men do nothing.

Time is running out to stop a massive persecution of Christians that has already begun.

Sheesh.

She wasn’t praying.

She was merely crediting the Power that rules her life and Who has helped her achieve her goals.

If you want to quote scripture, you would be better off comparing her remarks to those of Peter and John who, when told to shut up about the power behind them, said “we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

Acts 4:20

I had similar thoughts while watching the US Track and Field trials where almost every athlete was either crossing themselves, pointing up at the heavens or praising God after every race.

What happened to all the anti-christian bigots on ESPN and all over the media that couldn’t get to a microphone fast enough to spew their hatred of Tebow?

Did they all suddenly come down with laryngitis?

Or are they just afraid to spew hatred at black christian athletes (like Gabby and the vast majority of the track and field athletes) the same way that they spew hatred at white christians like Tebow?

Good for Gabby! Beautiful both inside and out. Her public expression of faith can’t be sitting well with the hateful media. It was easy to criticize Tebow; how long will it take them to start crapping on her?

I have no clue the 'floating' value of gold, or how much literal 'gold' is contained within a medal... However, small compensation for the years/hours these kids have put forth to become champions... My prayer is they recognize the 'gods' of this age consider them subjected to pay them homage for any awards/rewards EARNED for their hard work.

They say time is money, the literal time this little gal put into earning gold is never going to be reimbursed. She may well earn a compensation for future work but that medal is a small symbolic measure of compensation.

"Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's..."

A gold record? I thought she got a gold medal. Did she sing too?

Do they even make gold records anymore?

I thought the medal itself is just spray painted, the value being in what it represents, the fame and resulting endorsements, as well as the cash prize.

There is a time and place for everything. Christ also said not to put your light under a bushel; a city on a hill cannot be hidden.

Jesus also prayed publically, and His Father answered Him publically. His disciples prayed publically as well. The verse should not be seen as a prohibition against public prayer. To do so sets the scripture against itself (and against the church).
