Former Democrat Alabama Congressman Artur Davis stepped to the stage and seconded Obama's 2008 presidential nomination. He served as Obama's campaign co-chair in 2008. Today Davis is a Republican and in Virginia campaigning for Mitt Romney. He served in Congress from 2003 to 2011. He was the first Congressman to endorse Obama, and the first from the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) to demand that Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) surrender his gavel as head of the House Ways and Means Committee in the wake of his many-tentacled scandals. He is the only member of the CBC to vote against ObamaCare, and as so, was the representative of one of the most heavily Democratic districts in the country. When he ran for Alabama Governor in 2010 he lost. Blacks refused to support him.

"I think the Obama administration has candidly gone too far to the left. You can raise all kinds of questions on whether that's good politics or not," Davis told Wolf Blitzer. Davis said he had hoped Obama's presidency would make a huge dent in race relations, as well as move the Democratic Party further to the center.Davis graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard and Cum Laude from Harvard Law School. As a four-term Democrat US congressman, he chaired the Democratic Coalition but voted against partial birth abortion and for prohibiting minors from crossing state lines for abortion. He was pro-Israel, favors reducing America's independence on foreign oil and energy but tends to have other more liberal stances in some areas involving the EPA. He voted against legislation (Renewable energy Standards) that required electrical suppliers to provide 15% of their energy through renewable resources. In May he announced he was switching to the GOP, leaving the door open to a future political bid as a Republican.
Davis said in June that he thinks his one time political party was becoming more unwelcoming towards Southern conservative Democrats.
From on the Issues, he is against human cloning. He voted for TARP and most of Obama's bailout measures, but voted 'no' on the GM and Chrysler bailouts. He voted to Constitutionally define marriage as one-man-one-woman, yes for making the PATRIOT ACT permanent, and has historically supported the NAACP. His voting records seems to show him tough on drugs, not fond of labeling crime as "hate" crimes, and is considered by the NEA, pro-public schools although he believes parents should have the choice of Charter or public schools.
Grumpy Opinions points out that we don't hear a peep from Oprah these days, although she lost all conservative or even moderate cred years before The Won appeared on the scene. I welcome Artur Davis to the fight.

there are plenty of non college graduates, non “educated”, but very smart and wise people in america. they are the guys and girls who fix your plumbing, electricity, cars, etc.
Arthur Davis, the failed Alabama Dem gubernatorial candidate cannot get elected statewide in Alabama as a dem so he switched to the Republican Party. He is at heart a Dem who would not have switched it he could get elected as a Dem.He is definitely no Herman Cain.I trust him as far as I can throw him

After all, John Conyers has attacked Obama on multiple occasions but that doesn’t make him a conservative and republicans would be idiots to embrace him with open arms.
Hmmmm. I didn’t mean it that way. He has quite a a resume from Harvard, which Obama doesn’t have. I agree I could have said it another way.
chuckee, when I looked back at his voting record, which I have linked, it begins long before he ran for Governor. He had the courage to face down the CBC and while he isn’t a staunch conservative, in my opinion he has chosen the right issues, showing traditional values, to vote along with Republicans.
chuckee, no he is not a Herman Cain and never will be. He also isn’t running for office (but probably will one day). In the meantime if he can do anything for Romney-Ryan with his voting record to back him up, it’s a good thing.
bravo whiskey, I agree with all that. I just thought it delightful that he was so close to Obama, graduated Harvard, with a very distinguished record that Obama can’t come close to - and then voted against ObamaCare.
He should be invited to speak at the ‘12 GOP Convention, and dittos to all prominent conservatives, too.
What you want to review with Davis’ record is his votes when he represented an overwhelmingly black district. He became increasingly conservative when his district was gerrymandered to try to retain his seat.He lost.Then he became a bit more conservative when he knew he was running statewide for governor as a Dem to try to retain the black vote while attracting enough white votes to win. He lost. Then he made the switch to Republican. If you really want to determine if this guy is just another political whore without a core, check his votes when he represented an all black district before it was gerrymandered.Sure, I do not mind the national Republican ticket using him now but he is no Tim Scott of SC or Herman Cain. Both have been consistently principled conservatives.
Obama’s presidency DID make a huge dent in race relations, we’ve lost decades of progress.
I’m sure he’s not as conservative as many of us, but still, I’d trade Lindsay Graham for Artur Davis in a heartbeat. And hell yes, he should address the convention!!

I haven’t been able to determine when that happened. I assumed the gerrymandering favored a Black representative and conservatives were not an issue.
In 2002 his campaign was significantly funded by AIPAC. A lot of his campaign contributions came from Jewish communities outside of Alabama. He didn’t have a Repbulican opponent.
Democrats generally disdain any real support of Israel beyond lip service. Thanks for the information. I’ll see what else I can find.
