From the look of those devices I'm guessing the military in them days weren't too good at mathematics.
Any mediocre student of conic sections could design a parabolic/hyperbolic system that would beat the socks of those monstrosities.

As an aside, at the start of the second world war, a British military officer was tasked with scouting out positions along their coast where anti-aircraft guns could be emplaced on rails.

At one point he found a good location, but was rather surprised to see a small pair of rail tracks already there, and in good condition. Out of curiosity, he followed the tracks some distance to find that they dead ended inside of a large wooden shed.

Unable to see through the windows, he went in search for the shed’s owner, finding an elderly pensioner living nearby. Unsurprised with a uniformed military man, the pensioner offered to take him to the shed. Quite puzzled at this point, he followed.

In the shed was a World War One anti-aircraft gun, in very good condition and well maintained. As it turned out, the pensioner had been paid a stipend since the middle of the war to maintain the gun and the track, which he did. But after the war, the War Department neglected to cancel his stipend, nor recover the gun, so he had been caring for it ever since.

Sadly, the gun was far to small to continue carrying out its role, but due to its fine condition found a new home in a military museum. And as for the pensioner, he continued to receive his stipend, along with a much larger payment so that he could have his shed rebuilt and enlarged for the much larger, new gun.

Back in the 50s I was a volunteer member of the Ground Observer Corps. We used tube type amplifiers to listen for aircraft sounds, estimated altitude and flight direction, phoned in reports and kept records.

One of the towers on the Bridge of Lions was used as a listening post for a while, later a wooden tower was built just to the East of the St. Augustine Lighthouse.
