"CLEAR THE AREA OF POTENTIAL FLYING OBJECTS. Anything and everything in our yard AND the neighborhood that could be turned into a missile (including that 100lb garden pot you dont think can fly
it can), goes into the garage.... BOARDING UP: If you want to board up, this is how we did it (In Pensacola, 04 for Hurricane Ivan). (Now, there are great Plylox Hurricane Clips available, which will save you step #2," .......

I remember Carla, and seeing slabs with nothing on them but bent and torn individual pipes rising up for 2 or 3 feet out of the slab.
No house, no tubs, no framing, or sinks, just a slab stripped clean.
After Carla, my dad bought a large hull that was lying in a farmers field, a very long distance from the coast (2 or 3 miles?), he built a shrimper out of it.
By the way, “Hurricane Parties” used to be more common I think, and so very often they would simply be erased, disappeared, with no trace, or tales to tell, or even physical evidence that they had existed.
If I had Hurricane Katrina to do again, I’d have left Biloxi many days before to live with relatives in Iowa until it was all over. If you can evacuate, do so. We came **this close** to being killed and many people died a block or two away. If you can get out, get out.
It looks like tying yourself to the seat, and wearing a helmet might be prudent.
I can’t take another Katrina. A week without any power. I’ll go “home” to CA.
Dont look now but two major computer models are predicting Issac to become a MAJOR hurricane with a bulls eye hit on New Orleans:

That city is well on the way to recovery, and there are tower cranes up all over the place.
Gonna be a busy week.
I’m in Mobile. One thing about being a half assed prepper is there’s not a lot to do before a hurricane. I’m just going to get some gas today. There was actually a little bit of a run on gas yesterday. I hope we don’t run out (that may sound unlikely to people who aren’t in hurricane land, but it can happen). Walmart was out of gas cans yesterday already but Lowe’s had a pallet in the middle of the aisle. The worst I’m looking for out of this is probably having to chainsaw my way out of my neighborhood and losing power for a couple of days. I work in a shipyard on the river so how bad that gets damaged is a concern. It all depends on whether it hits to the east or west of us as to surge damage. I’m too far away from the coast to worry about boarding.
“Ill go home to CA.”
And wait patiently for the big one to hit without worning?
Least you get a week or two warning with a hurricane.
We had three eyes in two years at 125 mph. If it stay below 130 they can be lots of fun if you do not live in a flood area.
Course waiting for electricity to come back can be a bit tedious if you do not have a good generator
good article! Praying for ALL of my family and my husband’s family—nearly 75% of ‘em live between FWB FL and Slidell, LA, most on or a block from water. Sigh. Living near the beautiful Gulf Coast comes with a lot of sweat & tears, too.
God bless anyone who is the storm’s path, however big it is/will be.
Those new EPA/CARB "approved" gas cans suck! Always one of the first things to go though.
Yep, 20 bucks each instead 6 bucks a couple of years ago.
I would like to know how Mike Seidel of the Weather Channel legally travelled to Cuba to cover this weather event? Isn’t there some federal law against citizens going to this Communist state?
