World's richest woman: 'Drink less, work more'

SYDNEY — The world's richest woman, Australian mining tycoon Gina Rinehart, urged those "jealous" of the wealthy to "spend less time drinking" in a piece the government described as "insulting" on Thursday.

Rinehart, whose family iron ore prospecting fortune of Aus$29.2 billion (US$30.1 billion) also makes her Australia's wealthiest person, hit out at those who she said were envious of the rich.

"There is no monopoly on becoming a millionaire," she wrote in an industry magazine column.

"If you're jealous of those with more money, don't just sit there and complain. Do something to make more money yourself -- spend less time drinking or smoking and socialising, and more time working.

"Become one of those people who work hard, invest and build, and at the same time create employment and opportunities for others."

Rinehart blamed what she described as "socialist", anti-business policies for the plight of Australia's poor, urging the government to lower the minimum wage, as well as taxes, unless it wanted to end up like Greece.

"The terrible millionaires and billionaires can often invest in other countries... maybe their teenagers don't get the cars they wanted, or a better beach house or or maybe the holiday to Europe is cut short, but otherwise life goes on," she wrote.

"The millionaires and billionaires who choose to invest in Australia are actually those who most help the poor and our young. This secret needs to be spread widely."

But senior ministers including Treasurer Wayne Swan -- an outspoken critic of Australia's mining billionaires and their deep-pocketed anti-tax campaigns -- slammed the remarks...

Yeah, spread the wealth around, Gina, that's what Mr. Obama would want you to do, just like your own socialist government. You're not a racist, are you?

Truer words were never spoken. I would be wise to heed them myself.

“If you’re jealous of those with more money, don’t just sit there and complain. Do something to make more money yourself — spend less time drinking or smoking and socialising, and more time working.”

SHISH! Why do that when I can simply vote for people that’ll take your money and give it to me?!

When people drink, smoke, and socialize, they didn’t do that. Someone else made that happen.

Amen. Amen. Amen. That is a hard truth that a lot of people don't want to hear. My brother and some other members of my family are some of them. They are so bitter that some people have more and that they don't have as much as they want. Well, tough s___t. That's life. This woman may or may not have worked hard to get her money but that's not our issue. Work hard to make as much as you can.

One truth is that if you work hard, you will get ahead. That is one of the biggest lies the Libs tell. That somehow, there are all these people out there who work hard and don't get ahead. That its all one big gamble and you get rich on the luck of the draw. That is what Obama said in his "you didn't build that" speech. Remember, he said "Some people think they work hard" and that's the reason they are rich, but Obama said it isn't. B.S. IT IS the reason they are rich, for the most part.

There’s some good advice, but if I inherited my wealth as this woman has, I don’t think I’d have the chutzpah to say this. Better if the words had come from somebody who really did come up the hard way.

I agree with her. Working harder and not blowing your money on booze, cigarettes and entertainment won’t make most people billionaires, but there’s a darn good chance it will make you much better off than you’d otherwise have been.

Stupid thing for her to say.

True, she's not to blame for the struggles of the middle class, but she also has no idea just what the solution to the problem is. "Just work harder" is a bullcrap answer.

What about government subsidies that drive up the costs of goods and services (like subsidies for medical care)?

What about social insurance taxes?

What about stifling regulations?

When was the last time a group of people got together to form their own town and main street? Increased federal power to tax and spend has helped kill small, but otherwise economically efficient small towns.

Just because you’re a billionaire, it doesn’t mean you are smart, nor does it mean that you will win in a stink competition with skunks.

In this case, she should stop commenting publicly, but instead use her wealth to beat the snot out of the commies.

Because the great bottom line is that quick emotional gratification achieves little and risks much, but if you make an investment, you will get much more at much less risk.

Imagine if there was a conservative multi-billionaire who put as much effort into changing the public debate as does George Soros? Creating a hundred different organizations to do the hard lifting, keeping continual pressure on those you oppose.

It would accomplish a lot. Because such an effort wouldn’t be to create a stupid failure of a system like Soros’ beloved authoritarian socialism. It would work.

By her efforts alone, all Australia could be changed for the better, and she would make a lot of money in the deal as well. A lot more gratifying than getting sneered at by leftist skunks.

"Become one of those people who work hard, invest and build, and at the same time create employment and opportunities for others."

She's right.

Don't waste energy wanting what other people have. Spend your energy wanting what you can build, and finding ways to build it.

If you make your money honestly you have made it by serving others, by getting for them the things that they want and need, and by making their lives better. You have nothing to apologize for.

Maybe but that’s not the point really. Even Romney got every advantage there is in life with all school paid for and no need to work until graduating from law/biz school and dad bought him a house, car etc. He still worked to make even more and similarly this woman’s family provided her with a lot, still doesn’t mean she should have to give it away to people who are jealous they have to work a little harder. Life ain’t always fair and people need to get off their butt and make it happen and quit expecting thing be given to them.

One of the great things about here (Dallas/Ft Worth) is that a really nice house or almost a mansion is within many people’s grasp starting around $175,000 to $300,000 on up.

If you can afford the property taxes.

Mr. Obama came from a well-to-do family, too. His mother had the luxury of working for non-profits and NGOs and his grandmother was one of the first female banking executives in Hawaii. He went to private schools most of his life and didn’t pay a dime for any of his college costs, so far as we can tell. He always had enough money to supply his choom gang with happy smoke and munchies.

And the HOAs. But still MUCH cheaper than New York, the Beltway, California, etc.

Is that why people are building mansions and estates in Waxahachie, Prosper, Red Oak, etc?
