Nah, you know what? I am going to vote for Mitt Romney, a visibly good and decent man who loves America.

I no longer have any doubts whatsoever about who he is and what he stands for.

Not only will he be my president, but I like him.

I like him.

And madame, it is you who is boring.

Yep they will its not fear of Obama but tradition..I remember the pained look on O’Conners face election night 1996. She knew she would have to stay for at least another four years.

The SC justices are very aware of the politics of their replacement and they almost always retire (Souter being a recent exception) when the party that appointed them is in power.

One of the biggest fears I have of a Romney presidency is the Supreme Court. If he is elected he will appoint liberals to replace Scalia and Kennedy who will almost surely retire during a 4 or 8 year Romney administration. They would never retire during an Obama administration. Remember Clinton appointed NO SC Justices during his second term.

Romney’s liberal SC Justices will change the balance of the Court for 40 years into the future. Obama at most will replace Ginsburg with a liberal and will not change the court.

I’d rather live with four more years of Obama than have my kids live with 40 years of a liberal SC because of the liberal justices Romney will choose..

With all due respect, I am very curious to know what makes you say with seemingly certainty that Scalia and Kennedy would never retire if Obama is reelected? Yet they would surely if Romney is elected? If Romney turned out to be the Liberal Trojan Horse you believe him to be, why would they being the conservatives that they are retire under his rein and not Obama’s?

Also, why are you certain that Romney would nominate liberal justices to replace conservatives? Don’t you think the makeup of Congress could have a role in judge selection?

Mark Levin, a staunch conservative and Constitutional expert who leads Landmark Legal Foundation and has defended the Constitution and conservative principles in many lawsuits and worked in the Reagan administration, says to save the country, Romney (regardless of his imperfections) needs to win to save our country. Given Levin’s expertise and commitment to conservatism and our country, I tend to agree with him. If you doubt me, you can listen to his archived broadcasts online free of charge.

Man, I thought he was an empty suit too.

I kinda thought he was just a plastic man.

I was wrong.

He’s real. I cannot believe Mitt Romney moved me to tears. I really am stunned by this, and it happened more than once.
The heck happened in there tonight!?!?

Scalia and Kennedy will retire during Republican administrations because they were appointed by Republicans and the history of the Court proves that fact to be generally true.

I look at the Justices he appointed in Massachusetts..75% of which we liberal.

I think Levin is wrong. I'll do what I think is right I am sure Mark will do likewise

I have no fear of being blamed. I fear for my kids future if I was one of those who voted for a liberal Romney supreme court that in the next 40 years guts the 2nd amendment, enshrines Roe as the law of the land forever, recognizes gay marriage, overturns Citizens United, expands the precedent Roberts set in the Obamacare case and allows taxation of anything as long as the politicians call it a tax.

I don't claim to lead anything..just expressing my opinion and I wont be lead by the GOP into electing a liberal president.

History of court, generally true?

You say they “will be retiring” then you use the term “generally?” Hmmm not exactly quantitative or guaranteed...so, at best, you are making assumptions based on behaviors of past judges. Not sure you can make such assumptions based on past behaviors. Heck, look at what Roberts did this spring regarding obamacare!!!!

Not sure of your historical assumptions...it is now past one a.m. and perhaps over weekend i will attempt look at past judge retirements.

However, I do really respect the experience, intellect and knowledge base of Levin and am going to follow his lead. Romney is not perfect in any way shape or form, and if he wins, I suspect, I will be a prolific poster railing on many of his decisions.

However, I don’t think Romney is anti-USA...Clue: Have you seen 2016? If not, would highly recommend it. After you see it, you may decide that there is indeed a difference in world views between Romney and the current administration.

You do what you think is right; so will I. I don’t believe that this country will survive as we know it with 4 more years of this progressive experiment. Like it or not, Romney is the only man on the planet who might be able to unseat the current administration. In good conscience, I cannot ignore that fact.

To be fair and objective one must understand the politics of his court appointments. They had to be approved by an overwhelmingly liberal legislature.

Romney was never going to win that fight and stack the state courts with conservatives. That was an impossible task that would have come with a very heavy political price.

I am tired of this argument repeatedly being posted here on FR. It is a narrow argument that ignores reality. An appropriate analogy would be criticizing the QB for his passer rating during a game played in a monsoon. Peyton Manning on his best day could not pass effectively in those conditions.

It’s time to get over the temper tantrum and face reality.

To be fair and objective one must understand the politics of his court appointments. They had to be approved by an overwhelmingly liberal legislature.

Romney, asked if he has engaged in any horse-trading with Democratic politicians, said: “So far I have not ever given any weight whatsoever to whether I think someone can make it through the Governor’s Council. I send them individuals who I feel are highly qualified and have the right judicial temperament related to crime and punishment.”

They went through the Governor's council.

Romney appointed ZERO pro-life judges, ZERO conservative judges, only 25% of the judges he submitted were even registered republicans.

"Of course, Romney’s claim is nonsense. I’m no great fan of the Governor’s Council, but the Globe is quite right to note that one thing they have generally not been is overtly partisan. The notion that the Governor’s Council would have started rejecting judicial nominees if there were too many Republicans among them, simply because they were Republicans, is more than a bit absurd. And Romney of course has no evidence to substantiate what he’s saying.

"Near the end of Romney’s term, in 2006, he stripped the Judicial Nominating Commission of many of its powers, allowing his administration to put a more direct stamp on the judiciary, as he prepared to run for president. What a sad joke this man is.

I think tonight proved that under that expensive suit, Romney has an American heart and it beats strong. Obama just has a shriveled mass that kind of looks like a crumpled birth certificate.

The reason I said generally was because of Souter. He was a liberal justice, appointed by a the first President Bush who wanted to be replaced by a liberal so he retired in Obama’s first term.

If you really think there is a possibility any of the current conservative SC justices would retire in a second Obama term I have a nice piece of ocean front property up here in Montana I can sell you for cheap. Also can you imagine the wrath they would face from the right if they would retire. The big money speaking engagements would be far and few in coming

Levin is a Conservative Republican I'm not. I suspect you like many here are conservative Republicans who want to support your party.

I will support my country and allowing a liberal to appoint liberal justices to the Supreme Court is insanity because of the untold damage they can do in 40 years on the bench’

I am optimistic the country could muddle through four years of Obama, the nation has survived far worse. But allowing a liberal the opportunity to replace the conservative justices on the SC is something I will never support or vote for, the damage they will do to the country is far to great.

Obama is a husk who fills itself with whatever someone wants it to be, but never what will help that person, only that which will hurt and further empower the husk. It is literally the vessel of lies.

It is pure Evil, and it must be defeated.

Conservatives can’t win a war if they couldn’t even persuade fellow conservatives, who are about 60-65% of Republicans, to vote for them in the primaries. Romney’s winning the nomination is the sign of conservatives’ weakness, not the success of his campaign.

We saw different speeches then, he was soooooooooooo boring. I thought he was going to award a metal to Obama for trying. I re-read the transcript to make sure I knew what he was saying, even reading it was boring.

I joined to join in the conversation, to add my voice to the mix.

Is Romney as conservative as I would like? No, he is not. That doesn’t change the fact that he will be a much better President than Barack Obama. How anyone can not see the differences between the two men is beyond me.

We may not be happy with the choice but the alternative is obama. Voting 3rd party is voting for obama, as much as I hate to say that. If I thought it was of no consequence for the future I'd say screw it and not vote for romney, but I honestly see our nation withering and fading away if obama seizes another 4 years. Will romney be better? Both his kids and those who share his faith aren't a "protected class" whether he believes it or not. The future matters for his family and his faith. If he doesn't change things, all of them and ALL of us face dismal prospects for the future.

We are all in the same boat, the Titanic II is going down. We'd best paddle the same direction.

Actually, now that I’ve watched Romney at the convention, I have grown to respect the man.

I thought the entire convention was very good, and I came away feeling a bit better about my country, and about Romney.

I may be Pollyanna (I don’t think so)—but I do think if this man wins the presidency—and we can gain a lot of seats in the House and the Senate, America’s future will look a bit brighter, at least for a while.
