Clint Eastwood's Convention Schtick Draws Extreme Criticism
Nationaljournal ^

The reviews continue to pour in on Clint Eastwood’s appearance at the Republican National convention Thursday night, and "mixed" might be a charitable way to put it. One prominent Republican, Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, said that he "cringed" at the performance.

An unattributed release from the Romney campaign defended Eastwood, according to The Wall Street Journal: "Judging an American icon like Clint Eastwood through a typical political lens doesn’t work. His ad-libbing was a break from all the political speeches, and the crowd enjoyed it,” the statement read.

I'll agree it was a nice break from all the speechifying.

Put me in the “enjoyed it” column.

It was levity. And in itself, powerful. A little awkward, but we knew Eastwood is a powerful actor, and could tone it up if he needed to. But he didn’t need to.

If he had spoken at the DNC they would be raving at his performance.

Clint Eastwood delivers his carefully crafted
monologue to the Empty Chair, exactly representing
America's undocumented, National Disgrace.

One of the good things about old age is that you stop worrying about what people think of you.

You all can love it, like it, hate it. It does not matter because all we are doing today is talking about Clint Eastwood. He TOTALLY took the air out of Romney’s speech and anything else Romney.

Clint knows there is no such thing as bad publicity for an actor. The critics will just make people watch.

I didn’t watch the convention, but hearing about the Eastwood bit, I did watch the replay of it. I thought it quirky, a little awkward, but also pretty funny. Probably added a bit of zesty unpredictability to the proceedings, which I bet was needed. Being political junkies here, I sometimes think we underestimate how innately tiresome 95% of political speeches are to most viewers.

President Obama has done little more than fill chairs his entire career.

Well, not sure why Scott Walker dissed him. I certainly CAN understand why all the jerks on the networks and MSNBC did.

I'll say it again: Clint was FANTABULOUS!!!

In many of his movies there are very subtle messages. Many people only see the cigars and six shooter and anything more complex goes right over their head.

I wish they put an empty suit in the chair. That would have been hilarious and the kenyan would’ve understood it. As is, I don’t think he gets it. Too stuck up and full of himself. Also, he’s void of any sense of humor. Come to think of it...he’s void all the way around!

You do have a tough time with facts. Everyone is talking Clint Eastwood and not Romney’s speech. FACT! Deal with it.
