Eastwood's act caught GOP off guard
San Francisco Chronicle / SFGate.com ^ | Willie Brown

Posted on 09/02/2012 5:13:21 PM PDT by thecodont

Clint, did you ever make my day.

The two biggest names to show up at the Republican convention were Isaac, whose winds thankfully shortened the giant infomercial, and Clint Eastwood, who stole the show on closing night.

Republicans were looking for a big name to get big attention, but, as they say, be careful what you ask for.

You recall that Clint did that great commercial for Detroit that aired during the Super Bowl. So the GOP thought, hey, let's do it live, on prime time.

What they forgot was that Clint is an actor and that the commercial was scripted. On Thursday night, he was missing either a script or a good scriptwriter.

However, his rambling performance did succeed on one front - it actually made Mitt Romney look and sound coherent.

As for the Democratic National Convention, it will be the first one I skip since 1960.

Let's be honest: It has no mystery, no fights, and it's in Charlotte, N.C., which is about as far off the beaten path - or easy airplane connections - as you can get.

If this is the worst that Nancy Pelosi's good friend, former mayor Willie Brown can hurl at the GOP convention.... hmmmm.

And he doesn't sound thrilled at all about the DNC.

The lame stream media is trying every way they can to convince Americans the Clint show didn’t work. That it created more harm than good. Not even close. BIG, BIG success and it will go down in history, regardless of who wins the election.

No, what caught the GOPe by surprise was that finally a man stood up and said some really funny things that cut the quick of obama.
Isn’t amazing the people in the GOPe who are the strongest and convincing are women/minorities, actors and the white men cave at every opportunity.
And the white guys are forever apologizing for the strength of the others. Sorta puts the kabash on the ruling white guy theory.

Willie Brown is a rarity--an honest liberal who tells you what he really thinks and doesn't swallow the party Koolaid. I thought his remarks about the unions were interesting...

The unions are really bent out of shape because they weren't allowed in the room during the negotiations, as they usually are. But why should they be in the room?

The world is changing. Years ago it was the likes of Southern Pacific and other big businesses calling the shots in Sacramento, and we were all highly critical of them.

These days it's labor. That's not the portrayal union leaders like to see in the media, but it's the truth.

Someone has reconstructed both presentations...

VERY POWERFUL....

Take a look...

Enjoy and forward...

IF they were caught off guard it’s that they didn’t think he’d be that good. You could see the crowd into Clint big time. The empty chair is a metaphor that will go down in political history.

I found out the speech hit a home run while I was sitting at a Jack in the Box. A complete stranger was so happy with it he was trying to describe it to an employee there.

“The empty chair is a metaphor that will go down in political history.”

Yes it will. Long after the red and blue fauxshevik images of ‘08 are forgotten. ‘Empty chair’ will displace ‘empty suit’ for a generation or so, and it will be the defining image of the vacuous Obama.

My guess is that Obama’s, ‘you did not build it’ line, may have been what really set Clint off. Imagine how, of all people, Clint Eastwood, took that, you did not build it line.

I view Clint's performance as a basic intelligence test. Either you 'get it' or you don't. If I have to explain, you probably aren't capable of understanding.

It is interesting to see how many of the pundits out there can't pass the simple test.

The democrats are mocking Clint....probably because they don't have any idea who he is.

While WE were watching Rowdy Yates cutting them out, riding them in, roping, throwing and branding ....being the 'Good' in the Good, Bad and Ugly...Riding in his pickup with the Chimp.... making almost impossible shots with his .44 Mag....... being Josey Wales shooting at and cutting the rope on the ferry causing the vengeful Yankee's to get tossed into the river and of course walking down the street with Telly Savalas and Donald Sutherland waiting to draw down on a Panzer Tank in Kelly's Hero's, THEY (DEMOCRATE MALES) WERE IN THE BEDROOM PLAYING WITH DOLLS OR EACH OTHER.

I thought it was brilliant, “old fashioned” television. BO complained that it was “from the days of black-and-white TV.” You don’t say? That was the golden age of television. I’m probably dating myself to say that but I don’t care. It was a hit out of the park, as far as I’m concerned.

Tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 3 is “Empty Chair Day.” Put one prominently on your front yard for all to see - either alone or with a sign:

Clint Eastwood: This President is an Empty Chair.

"BIG, BIG success and it will go down in history, regardless of who wins the election."

Like I told a friend of mine, its one of the most successful pieces of political theater since the LBJ/Daisy Commercial.

Everyone is talking about it and "Eastwooding" and "ECOTUS" have gone viral.

Some of my coworkers have been rambling on about how awful Clint's performance was, so I finally asked them if they'd actually seen it or if they were merely going by what the media was saying about it.

All five answered to the latter, so I pulled it up on YouTube and had four of the five in stitches. The four agreed that the media had misrepresented the skit, with one of them going so far as sending an e-mail to her uncle, who is a fairly big-wig at CNN, to voice her displeasure.

It's San Francisco, and Willie's lost in the fog. Guess who Clint caught off guard.

Let's be honest: It has no mystery, no fights, and it's in Charlotte, N.C., which is about as far off the beaten path - or easy airplane connections - as you can get.

Charlotte/Douglas International Airport is the sixth busiest airport in both the U.S. and the world overall as measured by traffic (aircraft movements).[52] It is served by many domestic airlines, as well as international airlines Air Canada, Insel Air, and Lufthansa, and is the largest hub of US Airways. Nonstop flights are available to many destinations across the United States, as well as flights to Canada, Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, Mexico, and South America.

Now, that I don't get. Maybe because I'm working on an oil rig in ND. Maybe because I don't want to go to either SF or Charlotte (especially while the latter place is loaded with Dems).

I did get Clint Eastwood's bit, and it was great, but I hail from an era when the 8-track was yet to be invented, cell phones and personal computers were science fiction, and we'd likely check on the Pullman or Trailways (or Greyhound) rates to go coast to coast instead of flying.
