Eastwood's act caught GOP off guard
San Francisco Chronicle / SFGate.com ^ | Willie Brown

Clint, did you ever make my day.

The two biggest names to show up at the Republican convention were Isaac, whose winds thankfully shortened the giant infomercial, and Clint Eastwood, who stole the show on closing night.

Republicans were looking for a big name to get big attention, but, as they say, be careful what you ask for.

You recall that Clint did that great commercial for Detroit that aired during the Super Bowl. So the GOP thought, hey, let's do it live, on prime time.

What they forgot was that Clint is an actor and that the commercial was scripted. On Thursday night, he was missing either a script or a good scriptwriter.

However, his rambling performance did succeed on one front - it actually made Mitt Romney look and sound coherent.

As for the Democratic National Convention, it will be the first one I skip since 1960.

Let's be honest: It has no mystery, no fights, and it's in Charlotte, N.C., which is about as far off the beaten path - or easy airplane connections - as you can get.

If this is the worst that Nancy Pelosi's good friend, former mayor Willie Brown can hurl at the GOP convention.... hmmmm.

And he doesn't sound thrilled at all about the DNC.

The lame stream media is trying every way they can to convince Americans the Clint show didn’t work. That it created more harm than good. Not even close. BIG, BIG success and it will go down in history, regardless of who wins the election.

No, what caught the GOPe by surprise was that finally a man stood up and said some really funny things that cut the quick of obama.
Isn’t amazing the people in the GOPe who are the strongest and convincing are women/minorities, actors and the white men cave at every opportunity.
And the white guys are forever apologizing for the strength of the others. Sorta puts the kabash on the ruling white guy theory.

If Clint had Chuck Norris at his side, wouldn’t that have been too cool.

It was all meant to ridicule Obummer, which it did. It got under his thin skin.

Willie Brown is a rarity--an honest liberal who tells you what he really thinks and doesn't swallow the party Koolaid. I thought his remarks about the unions were interesting...

The unions are really bent out of shape because they weren't allowed in the room during the negotiations, as they usually are. But why should they be in the room?

The world is changing. Years ago it was the likes of Southern Pacific and other big businesses calling the shots in Sacramento, and we were all highly critical of them.

These days it's labor. That's not the portrayal union leaders like to see in the media, but it's the truth.

Someone has reconstructed both presentations...

VERY POWERFUL....

Take a look...

Enjoy and forward...

IF they were caught off guard it’s that they didn’t think he’d be that good. You could see the crowd into Clint big time. The empty chair is a metaphor that will go down in political history.

Yes, he did.
He was a man with testosterone, instead of wimpism.

I found out the speech hit a home run while I was sitting at a Jack in the Box. A complete stranger was so happy with it he was trying to describe it to an employee there.

“The empty chair is a metaphor that will go down in political history.”

Yes it will. Long after the red and blue fauxshevik images of ‘08 are forgotten. ‘Empty chair’ will displace ‘empty suit’ for a generation or so, and it will be the defining image of the vacuous Obama.

It's an east-coast hub, Willie. It's a common waypoint ON the beaten path of easy airline connections. "Atlanta north"

My guess is that Obama’s, ‘you did not build it’ line, may have been what really set Clint off. Imagine how, of all people, Clint Eastwood, took that, you did not build it line.

If Clint didn’t hit his target then the libs wouldn’t be so apoplectic now. But of course “empty chair” left a lot of butthurt, and I hear the laments of their women.
