READ EVERY WORD OF THIS AT LEAST TWICE. Matt Bracken has written a piece over at Western Rifle Shooters that matches exactly how I have envisaged the coming collapse and civil war.
His belief that it will all begin with the rejection of EBT Foodstamps cards is, I think, spot-on.
Next comes the urban riots.
Then comes the rioters spilling into the suburbs.
Then comes full-blown chaos when the rioters realize that the cops alone can't contain them.
Then come the beatings, rapes and murders. In the open. In broad daylight. At heavily trafficked intersections.
Then comes the militia, which is what I intend to do when shizz gets real. That has been my intention all along, since the fall of 2008 when I knew that collapse and civil war was an inevitability.
Echoing Bracken, if I am either sandbagged or on a bipod, 400 yards is an EASY kill. Men are a hell of a lot bigger than prairie dogs, which is why learning to snipe on prairie dogs is so wise, in addition to good, wholesome fun.
When I tell you people to be buying LONG GUNS and ammo, I'm not kidding. Assault rifles and tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition is one of the best places to park wealth right now. And you better know how to use it, and you better sit your wife down, tell her to cut the sissy, whiny female bullshit and learn how to handle every weapon system in your arsenal. This isn't a damn game or a TV show. Many, many women are going to find themselves as the ONLY THING standing between a hip-hop rape mob and their children.

If you like, put a nice collapsible pistol grip stock on it and a shell sling. Let her practice with what you will keep in it for defense. Don’t skimp on ammo ... Akkar is a very good and yet inexpensive brand thsat is very reliable. Order an extra spring for the weapon and shoot the dickens out of it, then replace the spring at 500 to 1000 rounds through it. Close quarters, #2 shot or slugs, a true man stopper.

I would argue though, that gold is still an excellent investment under these conditions.
The reason is that the end-state description does not determine how we get from here to there. I believe that one of the intermediate steps will be massive monetarization by the Fed. Even more massive than we have already had. It is the only way to “pay” the derivative debts and keep the financial system from total implosion.
Of course, the results will be like an Argentinian inflation, (which took about 18 months to become the full bore hyperinflation).
And, gold will do very, very well. Better than anything else.
If I am right (always unknown for the future), it will be possible to buy food, land, water purification, and ammo before the total collapse.
I would argue that barter items may actual be worth more, tobacco, alcohol, ammo, medicine, etc and be easier to sell and change into what you want than gold.

Those whole sold needed things to Gold miners often made more than all but the most successful miners. I think this will be the case. A connected person with access to needed/wanted goods or services will in long run come out a wealthy man from such a collapse.

The vast majority of all the "dollars" out there are just digits. Only a fraction of the money in institutional accounts has ever been printed into bills, which are no more "real" anyway. EBTs are no more suseptable to non payment than everybody's bank cards. Maybe less so, since the government can create money at will.
Politicians will continue to monitize the debt and pay out benefits, because that's the path of least resistance.

Having heard old family stories going back through Reconstruction, the Civil War and even to before the Revolution, it’s safe to say that freaked out, scared, angry people are capable of some very ugly things, and being notably “different” in times of chaos can attract the wrong attention. We’ve been on both sides of that equation. Choose your friends and associates wisely, endeavor to belong. Your life depends upon it at times. Some believe such a time is looming. I don’t honestly know about that, but it doesn’t look good.
To be honest with you, if Obama is reelected, I hope with everything within me that this DOES happen. Bring it on!

Most of the folks I know are shakers and movers, and firearms are a way of life out this way among that set. While these are some of the finest can-do folks it has been my privilege to know, they are all very capable and cussedly independent, and organization will be the key.
I expect there will be a coalescing of ad hoc forces as time goes on around the most effective leaders, but most here are hunters and 400-500 yards isn't pushing their limits at all.
Night would be the dangerous time, and good NVG/Thermal could be essential to keeping the MBZ crowd at a distance where they would be relatively ineffective. Let them close in force, and that could be a problem.
Of all the supplies discussed, batteries for essential equipment and the means to recharge them off-grid are a serious must.
