Iran Eyes Afghanistan: Iranians planning to fill U.S. vacuum after pullout
The Washington Free Beacon ^ | September 12, 2012 | Adam Kredo

Iran is hoping to increase its presence in Afghanistan after American and foreign troops “pull out” of the battle-weary country, according to Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

Iran is hoping to extend “aid and assistance” to Afghanistan, including providing help with “the construction of infrastructure projects,” Salehi said this week, according to Iran’s Fars News Agency.

The remarks make it clear that Iran is continuing to flex its political muscle in the region as Western forces depart Iraq and Afghanistan.

U.S. experts have expressed concerns about reports that Iran has clandestinely increased its military presence in Iraq by establishing a religious academy aimed at training some 1,500 recruits to use “combat weapons,” according to reports.

Iran reportedly paid $1 million to fund the camp, with training beginning in late July.

As it gets closer to obtaining nuclear weapons capabilities, Iran has also sought to exert its influence in Muslim Brotherhood-controlled Egypt, the Free Beacon reported today.

U.S. officials are concerned that a meeting between Egypt’s intelligence chief and a senior Iranian spy could be a signal that the two Middle Eastern countries are teaming up to promulgate terror across the region, according to the report.

Afghanistan is 80 percent Sunni, Iran is 90 percent Shia. Could be problems.

This. When the Taliban took over, the small Shiite community in Afghanistan buttoned up, because they knew that given the chance, the Taliban would utterly exterminate them.

As things are right now, the Wahhabi madrassas in Pakistan still teach that Shiites are heretics and should be killed whenever the opportunity presents itself.

For their part, the Iranians have similar attitudes towards Sunnis. So if they invaded Afghanistan, their first order of business would be to butcher a lot of Afghans.

What it is is a recipe for war. Pakistan, Afghanistan's primary regional patron with 20 million fellow ethnic Pashtuns, hates Shias even more than its Christian minority, and has been quietly exterminating them. The Sunni-Shia divide might not be a big deal for the Egyptians because there are no Shias in that part of the world. But it means everything to the Pakistanis.

If Iran (which almost went to war with the Taliban in 1999) sticks its nose into Afghanistan, it will mean a nasty, bloody and well-deserved war.

Iran is willing to get nasty and bloody.

But Sunnis in Afghanistan need not worry, Obama and his idiot followers are wanting to get us in a fight with Syria or Iran, or even both. The idiots think we can lob some missiles and bombs around the place and it'll be over quick. Or they want to do like they did in Libya and start with no-fly zones and then rapidly expand it to a full-scale war.
