Michelle Obama: [Another] VA School Rejects Her Request to Visit (Is the bloom off the rose?)

Yet another school has decided to make a political point by rejecting first lady Michelle Obama—this time an elementary school in Chesterfield County, Virginia.

Officials claimed that it went against school policy to allow the First Lady of the United States to speak at the school while on the campaign trail in Virginia. But according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, school officials refused to discuss their reasoning.

But James Holland, a Dale District Supervisor, and the only Democrat on the five-member Chesterfield board, was willing to talk.

“I do believe and think that Mrs. Obama, the first lady, should be allowed to attend a Chesterfield school.”

He said “I know it’s not school policy. However, I just do not agree with that, because I think it’s an honor for the first lady to visit a school.”

The Obama campaign in a released statement saying that the campaign considers a wide range of locations to when planning its events and the school was among the possible locations, however, the campaign decided on CenterStage theater as the preferred location to hold their event.

This was the second rejection in a week in Virginia—a few week ago, the University of Virginia refused to allow the president’s campaign to hold an event at one of their outdoor venues at the Charlottesville campus.

University of Virginia officials said allowing the event to be held at the venue would have led to the closing of other facilities and disruption of classes, on only the second day of the semester.

The Dispatch also reported a statement from Tim Bullis, the school division’s community relations director, who wrote, “If a political campaign were to inquire about the use of a school facility during the school day, the campaign would be referred to a School Board Policy 6100, which prohibits the use of school facilities during the school day for political purposes.”

James "Jim" Holland, Dale District Supervisor

Think back to 2009-2011 and try to imagine this happening over and over again. Remember how "popular" both of them were with their faces on the cover of EVERY kind of magazine, souvenirs sold everywhere, books about them, on every type of TV show, etc.?

Dude/dudette...she has “people” to clean your lavatory.

The same ones that pick up Barry’s dirty socks and shoes.

That’s what she said.

HA! I grew up going to Thomas Dale in Chester; I didn’t even realize there were that many conservatives left there!! With all the government installations around Richmond, I figured Chesterfield Co. had gone the way of Alexandria and Arlington. Damn, this cheers me right up!

I remember going to hear Lillian Carter speak at a local high school in 1980 when I was in elementary school. We had been studying the presidential campaigns, and we conducted debates and an election. This was in our “gifted” class. We ran the debates and election for our entire grade. Of course, Reagan won. But we had a great time on our field trip to see Miss Lillian.

In 1987, Gary Hart visited my high school. I shook his hand. The next day or a few days later, I can’t remember, he withdrew from the race.

I am not opposed to politicians visiting schools. I always thought it amusing that the Democrats thought they could sway the people in my area.

I was working on the Al Haig campaign at a LULAC event in Des Moines when Gary Hart withdrew. The Hispanics got a big chuckle out of it. Great tamales.

I remember a story where a school had to spend tens of thousands to renovate an area off their stage for a private bathroom for Obama, who was going to speak there.

The UV rejection opened the door for other institutions to do the same.

"Yet another school has decided to make a political point by rejecting first lady Michelle Obama—this time an elementary school in Chesterfield County, Virginia."

I would argue the school did exactly the opposite by sticking to its rules and not getting itself - or its young students - involved in campaign politics.

She won’t have anything to do after January 21, so have her come and explain to the “chir-dren” why there is nothing on their lunch trays that they want to eat.
