YouTube Movie Gems

Posted on 09/18/2012 9:51:49 AM PDT by Tuanedge

Hi everyone...I'm one of those people who broke the TV habit, but I still like to watch good movies, and living on a boat YouTube has become my sole source.

Thought if I ran across something special, I'd share it, and other people can share their faves too...

Enjoy, and God bless...Tuanedge

Thought my first contribution oughta be something up lifting, so here it is...

Chances are most of you have heard of or already seen The Crossing, I've seen it quite a few times... But with these days being what they are in our country, I needed to watch it again...

It's the Revolutionary War, George Washington and his ragtag rebels have suffered defeat after defeat. Starving and ill armed, they have reached their last stand.

His implacable will, the unique personalities of the people under his command, the diverse skills they bring to commit to the cause, the loyalty of his remaining men to a beloved commander in chief are the only assets the colonial army has left.

General Washington sees his army, farm boys and immigrants who look on him with hope, counts the superior forces arrayed against him, and knows the vicious winter approaching will surely decimate what is left of his men.

And he decides to attack.

I've dropped cable, why pay $100 a month to watch advertizements, and gone to broadcast for football and youtube for movies and such. Here's The Devil & Danial Webster. The people that made it assumed that those watching it would have a good knowledge of early American history and farm life in the 1800's.

I really enjoyed The Brest Fortress. It's a Russian movie with lots of action. I don't think it's online with subtitles, but I'm sure you can download it somewhere.

Here it is on youtube without subtitles. (Just to get a feel for the it)

David McCullough's great book 1776 tells this story wonderfully. One of the best books of American history I have ever read. After you are finished there is no way you can not believe that God Himself had a hand in the establishment of this nation.

By the way, folks, you can help me a lot.

I translated a really raunchy, off-beat Japanese series called “World Downtown,” and it is comedy like you have never seen before...IF you can endure it.

Watch it with shocked laughter (the first few episodes are pretty tame but it soon goes off the rails)

I’ve been enjoying the BBC’s Story of Wales:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adWLHAoKGHc

All six episodes are on YouTube (58 min each)

Also a great reality series on the London Underground called The Tube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrhslXjN5xE

Several other episodes are there as well

I’m in a middle of a BBC movie on Charles II. A bit racy for a historical drama, but a fascinating look at the end of the Cromwell era and the Restoration.

Frankly, I haven’t watched any “regular” TV in over a year. Dont miss it. In fact the sound of a TV that is tuned to an actual network causes me to wince. If you can, just attach your laptop or a pc to your TV (these days a cinch procedure) and cancel cable TODAY.

I saw James Burke speak while I was in college and he was thoroughly engaging. Two hours never went so fast. And thanks for pointing out the YouTube links. I loved that show.

If you want some weird, hilarious Australian sci-fi and fantasy comedy, check out “Danger 5”. (IMDb rating of 8.1).

“The show is set in a bizarre 1960s interpretation of World War II and follows a group of five international spies on a mission to kill Adolf Hitler and thwart his plans of world domination.”

Episodes:

“The Diamond Girls”
“I Danced For Hitler”
“Lizard Soldiers Of The Third Reich”
“Kill-Men Of The Rising Sun”
“Hitler’s Golden Murder Palace”
“Fresh Meat For Hitler’s Sex Kitchen”
“Final Victory”

Here is the plot(?) of ‘Lizard Soldiers’:

“American GIs are being decimated by Nazi dinosaurs all over the Western front. Danger 5 heads to Belgium to investigate and has a series of close shaves with a trigger-happy Triceratops and a perverted Nazi Pterodactyl. Claire discovers that the dinosaurs have all been implanted with a mysterious type of crystal, native to Antarctica and Danger 5 embark on a journey to the South Pole. Antarctica proves to be a lost plateau of prehistoric wonder where Danger 5 encounter the bizarre Dr Josef Mengele and his sinister volcano base filled with Nazi dinosaur minions.”

I might as well confess, I'm a kung fu freak, and I love Chinese cinema.

But, I am discerning. This particular martial arts movie is not really an action flick per se....it's more along the lines of a fantasy film.

Not my usual bill of fare... and usually I'm critical of these fly by wire type of martial arts moves on film that have no practical basis in reality. But this movie is so beautiful. It's like a work of art.

Admittedly it's just a bit thin on plot... the ending is a bit pat...but it more than makes up for it in the gorgeous scenes, the intense actors, the beautiful women, and the ballet type moves that normally I would never care for, are so communicative and full of emotional content; it's a very singular and wonderful film.

Ladies, if you hate kung fu movies you will love this one...trust me it's sweet and full of romantic angles... and guys, if you like the MA genre I think I can guarantee you won't be bored.

For the first 10 minutes they're basically setting up the film, it doesn't start out like the high level flick I describe but it gets up to speed in no time. Definitely in the vein of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, but with a shot of Lord of the Rings thrown in. And the special effects are inspired.

In Chinese with English and Mandarin subtitles.

This movie will always be one of my top 5 picks for best movie of all time.

Everyone's heard of it; the only thing I'll say is that if any movie was perfectly made, this one was perfectly made. IMO there is not one thing you could do this movie to make it any better, not one scene you could take out, not anything that you could put in. Every actor is a perfect choice, every scene is a perfect shot. Poetry on film.

Some people say that one particular scene could be charged as a display of wife abuse, but my defense is that Maureen O'Hara is 1 tough gal and could have knocked out John Wayne anytime she wanted to, her character was just letting him THINK he was in charge. My proof is at the end of the scene, she walks off looking like the cat that ate the canary. What a woman.

In the movie John Wayne, in character, says that the village of Innisfree always seemed to be an image of heaven for him. I can't argue.

At the end of the movie, you can try to help solve a mystery that millions of people all over the planet have been trying to solve ever since this movie was made. The movie is almost over, the scene shows John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara standing by the brook in front of their cottage, and she turns and whispers something into his ear, that makes John Wayne quickly turn towards her in a look of startled surprise...she steps away, gives a "come hither" look, and then he follows her.

Maureen O'Hara has said in interviews that the director told her to whisper something truly obscene of a sexual nature into John Wayne's ear in order to produce that startled look. And to my eyes at least, when he follows her afterwards, it seems he wants to follow her, but he's also a little afraid to...LOL!

To this day, Maureen O'Hara will NOT say what she whispered into John Wayne's ear, and she says she's going to take it with her into her grave. People with digital enhancers and lip readers have tried to discern what she actually says in that scene, to no avail.

I have my own psychic guess, but I won't say what it is. ENJOY.
