In all fairness, Afghanistan was a loser from the beginning, as it needed twice the rebuild that Iraq needed.
They needed a Paul Bremer style government, more along the lines of the MacArthur(PBUH) government of postwar Japan, who would create their new constitution, and tear down the old, corrupt systems of the former regime. It was a tragic error trying to repair an antiquated, barbaric system of government that they have today.
Then, we should have rounded up every young orphan in the country and sending them to a giant boarding school outside of Kabul for a modern, western, secular education in the middle of a major military garrison. Had we done so, there would now be an entire generation raised to be the future government and military command of Afghanistan.
These orphans would have no tribal affiliations, a very moderate version of Islam, such as Sufi, and be extremely patriotic and nationalistic. With good nutrition and health.
Next, because of the tiny average wage in Afghanistan, we could have hired every unemployed male in the southern half of the country to work in huge national infrastructure projects, for under $1b a year. Thus any male walking around without identity papers and a job would instantly be a suspect and detained.
As repulsive, repugnant and evil “big brother” is in America, it would have been just what the Afghans needed to restore order.
