FR Opinion Poll: Is Gary Johnson Going To Cost Romney The Election?
Self/Vanity | 9/24/2012

Posted on 09/24/2012 12:29:02 PM PDT by My Favorite Headache

I wanted to get the current opinion of Freepers on whether or not they believe Gary Johnson will cost Mitt Romney the election?

I am asking this because I have been seeing more and more polls as well as interest on Facebook and Twitter about Gary getting the Ron Paul voters and Independents to swing his way. A lot of them are from the legalize crowd and the others are from the Alex Jones wing.

Recent polls in Montana show Johnson picking up 2% of the vote, in places like Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada he is picking up around 3 to 5% of the vote in polls.

Romney looks like he is gonna need those 3 to 5% in those exact states to beat Obama and Johnson appears to be ready to make it impossible for him to get it. Since 1% of Dems break away to Johnson and the other 2,3,4% come from Republicans.

Thoughts?

The only people I hear talking about Gary Johnsonm are the libtards who HOPE he will draw votes from Romney-

The Notobamney vote is way too strong to worry about that- and he may actually draw more DEMOCRAP votes away

Quite possible. The one or two percent Gary will take away from Mitt is huge in this race.

No. Anyone who votes for Gary Johnson is voting for Gary Johnson and would never have voted for Romney in the first place.

I never assume that your vote is owned by someone else; that is not democracy or liberty. If Mitt Romney cannot convince people to vote for him (or heck Obama can’t convince you to vote Romney) then it is nobody else’s fault but his.

All Romney has to do is identify Gary’s love of marijuana and compare him against Obama’s anti-marijuana stance and every pothead OWS type will vote for Gary.

I wouldn't worry about it.

You are making the assumption that those votes for Johnson would have gone for Romney, if Johnson wasn't in the running.

That is a flawed assumption. They are casting a protest vote against Romney and Obama, and if they didn't have that choice, they likely wouldn't voted at all -- at least for the Presidential ticket.

Would Johnson voters vote for Romney if Johnson wasn’t on the ballot? I’m thinking most wouldn’t. I’m thinking they would either not vote, write someone in, or vote for another obscure candidate on the ballot.

Johnson will steal more votes away from 0bama than Romney. No worries on this one. Gays and potheads who don’t like 0bama will LOVE Johnson! Not many gays and potheads in the Romney camp anyway, so no worries.

Pretty sure that None of the Above would carry 50 of the 57 states.

So the assumption that ANY vote for Gary Johnson somehow belongs to Mittens ‘I like Mandates, Mandates Work’ Romney is patently false.

but he is absent collecting money.

Romney’s liberal beliefs and his belief that he

I have given up on the RINOs, the country club big-spending ‘pubbies, won’t vote for Gary Johnson because he thinks gay marriage is a Constitutional right. Where to go? I think we need a new party - something akin to the Anti-federalists - they WERE right.

I saw today where he is suing to get included in the debates.

Johnson is a crackpot on social and foreign policy issues. Anyone who says Iran is no threat to the United States because of “muutally assured destruction” should probably not be within 10 miles of the White House.

Show me which polls predicted 2010 election results.
2012 will be worse for democrats than 2010 was because everything is worse now than 2 years ago.

Gary Johnson will be a small pimple on a large elephants azz.
He won’t affect the coming landslide for Romney.

Who is Gary Johnson?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He’s a Ron Paul Wanna-be. He’s a dip-wad libertarian complete with crack-pot ideals about surrendering in the WOD, and who believes 9/11 was an inside job among other things.
In other words... A Liberal.
Assuming Romney truly wants to win the race it is his job to develop a compelling message and persuade enough voters to vote for him such that he wins 270 electoral votes. If the 1-2% Johnson or other third party candidates realize makes the difference in the election, it says Romney does not have a message compelling enough to a majority of voters. No different than the Nader votes in the 2000 election swinging the popular vote in Florida from Gore to Bush.
This election should be a cakewalk for the Republicans. The fact it is close speaks to a weak candidate and absence of a differentiated message. The Republicans have played defense throughout the campaign and allowed the opposition to define the campaign. Romney spent the last few weeks raising cash instead of talking to the votes. He has elected not to use the Tea Party organizations or conservative big names (Palin, Gingrich, Cain, Perry) on the campaign trail. If Romney loses, the last person Republicans should blame is Gary Johnson, no matter how many votes Johnson tallies.
Romney is running this campaign the way he wants to run it. Moderate and safe. If he wins he can take credit and feel no obligation to the conservative wing of the party. If he loses, he lost on his merits. Win or lose, conservatives should determine if they really have a home in the Republican Party.
I want to think that Gary Johnson won’t affect Mitt’s results, just as John Anderson didn’t affect Ronaldus Magnus in 1980 (50.4 RR, 41 Carter, 6.6 Anderson). I know Mitt isn’t RR, but I believe the electorate is just as stirred up as they were back then, if not more.
I was initially concerned, but not really anymore. The other category is very small this election, unusually small. I don’t see it having an impact, as Libertarian people also lean Dem in some ways.
We will see. If his numbers jump in states, that might be time to worry. I don’t see it. There are a lot trying on CNN message boards and such, but typically these folks have a small bubble that then will burst as the election gets closer. I see his percentage being smaller on election day when people actually decide if they want a vote to matter or not.
Johnson is a nuisance, with the overall effect of a gnat that won’t go away. He needs to figure out this isn’t a triathlon where he gets points for finishing. It isn’t a race that is about him. Shoo Gary! Go away. Come back and buzz around another day, when we don’t have more important things to worry about.
