Doctor Who Has Become Fan Wank
The Freehold ^ | September 27, 2012 | Jonathan David Baird

This article is going to make many people angry. I don’t care because it needs to be said. Doctor Who has become fan wank. I am not slamming the performance of Matt Smith who I think is brilliant as the Doctor. I am slamming this current season’s writing staff and their inability to craft a believable Doctor Who story.

I would say some episodes were about as appealing as British warm beer lately.

The last one about the angels in Manhattan was pretty good though and the farewell of Rory and Amy was a bit sad but done well, River is hot hot hot and compliments the doctor, but what about when the Doctor regenerates? same chemistry?

Or will River herself het her regeneration back?

If anything I would like to see the Doctor going back in time to assist older episodes of himself like from the earliest Dr. Who series, if they could get the CGI right it would be awesome.

What is a “Fan Wank?”

It's one reason Jonathan David Baird has trouble reselling his comic books.

They're soiled.

Really, dude, you need to do a little bit of research before you go off barking like that. For one thing, JN-T did not cause Tom Baker's departure from the show. He has been playing the Doctor for seven years and he was getting tired of the role and the declining quality of the scripts.

"The fiasco involving Colin Baker" had to do with the then BBC Head of Drama, Michael Grade, who not only admitted he didn't like Doctor Who, but killed other sci-fi shows like The Tripods and reruns of the original Star Trek that didn't cost the Beeb a penny to produce!

Further, after an 18-month hiatus, and "Trial of a Time Lord," it was decided by Grade and another working for Grade who had an equal distaste for the show that Colin would be removed from the show because three years was enough as far as they were concerned, even if the show wasn't actually on the telly.

For the final two seasons, JN-T was only a reluctant producer as he actually wanted to move on but he wasn't allowed to. Having moved the show from its traditional time slot of Saturday afternoons to compete with long-running programs like Coronation Street is what ultimately killed the show. Don't place blame at the feet of JN-T for things beyond his control. He did the best he could with what he had.

Technically it is a police box, and not a phone booth.

I thought that his entire tenure on the program was fairly awful. Too many derivative programs, too many poor casting decisions (some of the most unpopular companions in the original run of the series dated from the JNT regime). Don’t get started on his fights with Eric Saward and others on the series.
