The jury is still out on that one.
But, the ceremonial rape is the ultimate disrespect (defiling a corpse), which was used on Gaddafi, and (allegedly) Stevens. The reason the agents or employees hated him was because (allegedly) he was gay, and Muslims don't like anyone being openly gay (secretly is another story). They also resented 'the way he treated them' or 'used them' to betray others.
The point is that they (allegedly) performed this ceremonial rape on both, and just about anything works for an excuse. For them, it's like making the Winning Touchdown at the Super Bowl.
