Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney wants to buy three more submarines over the next three years as part of his plan to boost shipbuilding to 15 ships per year, he said Monday in a speech at the Virginia Military Institute.
Romney also plans to add an 11th aircraft carrier wing, build more Marine Corps amphibious ships, F/A-18 Super Hornets, a missile defense ship and a frigate.
The Republican spoke in detail about his plans to grow the Navy while adding few details about the other services in his speech to VMI Keydets billed as a national security address. Chris Cavas, Defense News naval ace, broke the story of Romneys naval plans following an interview with John Lehman, a top Romney national security adviser and former Navy secretary.
On the campaign trail, Romney has promised to build up the Navy fleet to 350 ships by increasing annual shipbuilding from nine to 15 vessels. Until Monday, he had not provided details to what he wanted to build.
The Pentagon is preparing for a potential $500 billion cut to planned defense spending over the next decade should Congress not reach a compromise by Jan. 2 to avoid sequestration. Romney has placed blame on Obama for not showing more leadership toward ending the cuts.
Romney explained how hed more actively use the American military to influence events in the Middle East during his speech Monday. He said increasing the Pentagons budget is part of that as a strong military prevents war.
Romney criticized Obama for his handling of the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya. He said it was wrong for the president to blame the attack at first on an anti-Islamic You tube video that unleashed large scale protests across the Middle East.
This latest assault cannot be blamed on a reprehensible video insulting Islam, despite the administrations attempts to convince us of that for so long, Romney said.
Geez...that’s a lot of details for a guy who doesn’t supply details. Does Bammy know about this?
Just one of many reasons this Petty Officer First Class plans on voting for Mitt Romney. And it isn’t just ships and aircraft my navy needs. We also need to bring back the countless good sailors who were recently shown the door due to the Navy’s misguided PTS (Perform To Serve) and ERB (Enlisted Retention Board) programs. We kicked out a lot of guys and gals who had done nothing wrong. Sailors who wanted to stay and continue to serve. Sailors with valuable skills. We kicked out way too many of them and now it is coming back to bite us in the ass.
After the repeal of DADT and the open arm welcome of the sodomite crowd, that isn't the only thing happening to the military's ass.
You aren’t alone on that. It makes my blood boil. The US military has always been used to help in various situations, but it isn’t the damned Peace Corps.
Frikking leftist turds. I hate what they have done to the military in general, and the Navy in particular.
> Romney has promised to build up the Navy fleet to 350 ships ...
Since we currently have 285 on active service, that means he plans to add 65.
Along with a rebuilding of our Navy, I hope Romney will also undo Obama’s unilateral nuclear disarmament activity (which happened to be the stupidest act of any president in history.)
It’s time to kick out the freaking leftist turds at the Pentagon — you know, the ones who never served a day in their life, yet are somehow over and in charge of our fine military folks, making their lives miserable every day.
PLENTY of these types up there. They are an abomination. They need to be smoked out of their holes and fired — at ALL levels!!!
Force reductions from Dem Presidents are easy to overturn, the heavy lifting is still to be done.
Tax cuts, making other tax cuts permanent, a deficit of 1 trillion a year. Are you kidding ? Only noticeably lacking on details of how this is all going to be paid for.
IIRC, about 20-25 the Navy was testing a rocket-boosted projectile for use on battleships...the range was between 50-100 miles, which put some 80% of the world’s population within range...would have come in at about 1% of the cost of some of these new weapons..Just imagine two BB’s in the Persian Gulf systematically taking out Iran’s nuke sites..
I saw a silly Marine Corps ad last night that I thought at first was that Navy ad. Maybe they’re using the same ad agency?
