Sesame Street asks Obama campaign to take down Big Bird ad

Daniel Strauss

Sesame Street wants President Obama's campaign to take down its latest attack ad against Mitt Romney, which features footage of Big Bird.

"Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns," a Tuesday statement on Sesameworkshop.org reads. "We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down."

The Obama campaign said it would review the request.

"We've received and will review their concerns," said an Obama campaign official.

The statement from the workshop behind the popular children's show came a few hours after the Obama campaign released the ad, which attacks Romney for his call to cut PBS funding.

The heavy-hiting ad compares "Sesame Street" character Big Bird, whom Romney mentioned during last Wednesday's presidential debate, to corporate titans prosecuted for financial misdeeds.

"Bernie Madoff. Ken Lay. Dennis Kozlowski: Criminals. Gluttons of greed. And the evil genius who towered over them?" a voiceover says as a silhouette of Big Bird moves on screen.

Romney's mention of Big Bird during the debate brought the yellow puppet back into the national spotlight, causing a frenzy on the social media web site Twitter and leading to a cameo by Big Bird on "Saturday Night Live."

“I like PBS. I love Big Bird. Actually, I like you, too,” Romney said to debate moderator Jim Lehrer, the host of PBS's "NewsHour." “But I'm not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for."

The Obama campaign has since mocked Romney over the remark with the new ad being the latest attack on the Republican presidential candidate.

"Big, yellow, a menace to our economy," the ad says. "Mitt Romney knows it's not Wall Street you have to worry about, it's Sesame Street."

Translation: They don’t want this to escalate to the point where Romney or Ryan put out a soundbyte that tells the public how much they are making on merchandising!

“Non profit”
Yup. How many millions do they make on the merchandising?
Tax writeoff, too.

Big Bird tastes great with sweet and sour sauce. Sending $ to China to pay for it...but, with six trillion you get eggroll!

They accepted the godfather's favor and the bird will crap when the godfather says it craps.

The President of the United States of America continues to make a complete and total ass of himself. It is embarrassing.

“Will Ann Romney be on it if Mitt wins?”

Only in effigy.

“Laura Bush was the first First Lady to ignore Sesame Street since Republican Godmother Nancy Reagan visited in the ‘80s.”

This is the sort of stupidity you see when a campaign is imploding on itself.

Poor buggers… Even Jimmy Carter had the lead at this point in 1980. The Democrats are in free fall and in serious danger of not only losing the presidency, but of losing more congressional seats, senatorial seats and governorships. This could be the unmitigated disaster for the Dems brought on by their failure to understand that the midterm elections were no anomaly. They were a clear indication of what was ahead for them, despite the media’s sad attempt to pretend that everything was fine, reality has caught up with them.

Isn't using copyrighted images without the permission of the copyright holder illegal?

Maybe if they keep it up, Big Bird will pluck him.
