What fifty years of liberalism has brought: Detroit is crumbling faster than Obama presidency
coachisright.com ^ | Oct. 10, 2012 | Kevin "Coach" Collins

“Detroit is America’s most violent city” “Detroit’s homicide rate is the highest in the country” “Detroit’s Police Department is grossly understaffed” these are the opening lines of a warning from the Motor City’s Police Union advising people that for their own safety they should stay away from Detroit.

The declaration goes on to say that DPD officers are required to work 12 hour shifts, TWELEVE HOUR SHIFTS!

Imagine how exhausting it would be to work at ANY job for 12 straight hours, finish up and look forward to coming back ½ a day later for 12 more hours!

DPD cops are the lowest paid police officers of any big city in the country and make far less than many cops in surrounding towns. Working from street level the cops know that liberalism has destroyed one of America’s once great cities.

How did this happen?

Detroit is the crown jewel of liberalism’s tiara of failure. It has been run by Democrats for so long that few even remember the last time a Republican was mayor.

As far back as February 2010 Barack Obama entered into discussions with Detroit’s Mayor Dave Bing to facilitate the process of physically tearing down large sections of Detroit.

Democrats are prone to say a job is too big for one man when that one man is a Democrat. Haven’t we heard “He did better than anyone else could have” as an excuse for Obama’s failures?

The Democrats have admitted that fifty years of their rule has left Detroit flat on its back and gasping for air. Since the “wrecking ball” option was selected Democrats ….. devoured anything of value [ left in Detroit]..

But haven’t mustered the guts to start the actual process, they are just letting nature reclaim her territory.

Detroit was once a great city. It was destroyed by unions and their Democrat friends.

No wonder they’re understaffed. Payout to Union retirees is probably higher than current payroll! Paying people for 30 years of their life for not working is unsustainable.

IOW the SHTF is now happening. The kicked can just hit a brick wall! Now pay up you urbanites!

In case the ivory tower clowns at "coachisright" hadn't noticed, most Americans are working 12 hour shifts or more to make ends meet.

Often without the fat overtime pay or swank benefits that public employees make.

And I would bet that the only reason why Detroit cops work 12 hour shifts is because it is too expensive to hire new officers and give them all the benefits packages that the police union has negotiated.

Fun fact: Detroit has no tax base and cannot afford to pay police officers the same exorbitant salaries that morons in the suburbs agree to pay to their bloated police departments.

The Detroit police union is just pissed that the bankrupt city of Detroit may have to reduce their insane benefits and pensions. Or even lay off a few of them.

The police union IS PART OF THE PROBLEM in Detroit.

You MUST join the police union and pay union dues AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT. No ifs, ands or buts.

Then the police union takes the union dues and helps elected left wing goons that promise the police union sweetheart contracts.

Public unions are the MAIN REASON why these cities are bankrupt.

Public unions (like all parasites) KILLED THEIR HOST.

And now they are mad that they are unaffordable to the city (which, BTW, is STILL run by left wing goons). It says something when the left wing goons start to turn on the public union goons.

It is 30 years too late.

Maybe it’s just me*, but I have not met anyone doing that for over 30 years. A friend who works at a bourbon barrel making plant did put in some 10 hour shifts for a few weeks, but he saw it as a financial boon.

*lived in Seattle area for 45 years and have been in Kentucky now for a little over a year.

Don’t have to imagine it. Did it in the military all the time. I once had a boss whose philosophy was “6 to 6 to make O-6” (6am to 6pm to make colonel) but all of us who worked for him were definitely not colonels I can assure you. In fact, we all used to sarcastically say that if the military wanted us to have a family life/social life they would have issued it to us. I don’t think it has changed either. And, my friends who work in hospitals also know what 12 hour shifts are like. I think probably a lot of people work 12 hrs or even more...

Boo Hoo . I am one of those hospital workers that worked 12 hr shifts. Once I actually worked 21 days in a row. Just before I retired I was working 10 hr days, 14 days on and 2 days off. Did it for 43 years.

bless you! Bet your back, legs and feet show the years of wear on your body, too. Patient care is hard work!

I don’t think most people mind long hours working—it’s getting paid too little for that work, or working in terrible and/or dangerous conditions that extracts a toll on the worker. People who own their own businesses work LONG hours all the time, as do lots of occupations. Detroit must be like a war zone for its police officers, firefighters, and EMTs. Bad city leaders voted in too many times have allowed this to spiral down to such a sad state of affairs...

WE started 12 hour shifts in 1983 or so and the police department is still on them. When I became chief of a small department we impleemented 12 hour shifts. Overall they are great. We seldom worked more than 4 days in a row. THe problem becomes when you have a long commute. I would bet very few Detroit officers live in the city so they all have a bit of a commute. I will add that 12 hour shifts are fatiguing and you do not want to stay longer than you have to. Also, the do not allow for a lot of personal time between shifts. HOwever, with 3 and 4 days off every week, it is more than in balance. Saginaw went to 12’s last year and saved a lot of money and improved coverage.
It boils down efficiency. 12’s are more efficient and saves overtime. I was always conservative with my leave days because they were still issued in 8 hour blocks and a day off took 1.5 days. So either I had to be VERY sick or really needed the day off.
Overall, 12’s are a non issue.

Coleman Young really accelerated the process, applying the technique of Boston's mayor Curley, chasing out a lot of the people inclined to vote against him.

The downside being, that those were the smarter, honest, and generally more productive citizens, not to mention, law-abiding. The city was

Young took it to a new level, using the tribalism of race.

“Detroit is America’s most violent city”

I'm calling BS on this crap and don't really care if the "cool FReepers" agree because conservatives should be smarter than this. Instead I see FReepers happily promoting the Detroit policeman's union attempt to blackmail the city into giving them more money.

Detroit leads the nation in justifiable homicide which for statistical purposes is listed as murder. More often than not justifiable homicide is a defensive killing and isn't a bad thing. As far as I'm concerned it should be promoted as an example of gun ownership and defense.

Meanwhile in Chicago, how many are shot or murdered in a typical week? 20, 30, 40?

I remember Chicago, SF, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and a few other cities from back in the 50s and very early-60s, and they were nice places to visit. They’re (mostly) sewers now, in comparison. 50-60yrs of lib-dem/union control has caused widespread ruination.

There is another reason why Detroit and every other urban center in this country has become a third world cesspit. But mentioning it is verboten. The occasional aberration of a Republican mayor is simply a temporary band aid over large and suppurating wound.

And this just in...

39% of Detroit residents say they plan to leave the city within the next 5 years.

Coyotes, bear, and deer have been seen roaming greenfields that used to be thriving neighborhoods.

Detroit is liberalism’s “epic fail” for all to see.

I’ll mention it. It’s called the black undertow. Thug black culture, birthed by the “Great Society” and of course the democrat party, is what has made all this possible.

There are always two common denominators in cities in decline.
One, of course, is first and foremost; Democrat party rule. The second , as in this case, is a feral thug culture that has zero interest in playing by the rules, or being productive. Until this can be honestly and openly debated, and the truth be told, all is lost. Atlana is next. Look at Gary, Indiana. There are many, many more. Care to guess which ethnic “group” is the majority?

We MUST begin to speak the truth on these issues. To hell with cries of “racism”. We ignore this at our peril.

Maybe it’s just the churches I go to and the people I work with. Maybe it’s YOU that doesn’t get out much. ;-)

On the other hand, maybe we just hang out in different circles. Other than consulting, I have not had an “hourly” job since 1983. Nor were any of the people I worked with paid by the hour.

I went to a $2,300 COBOL computer course for 10 months in 1983. It got me out of retail sales and I never looked back.

***Imagine how exhausting it would be to work at ANY job for 12 straight hours,***

I’ve done it and it can be done if you are on a straight shift. 10 hours is easier, but a 12 hour ROTATING SHIFT (a few days, then switch to nights for a few days, then back to days) is a real killer! 6AM to 6PM. Then 6PM to 6AM.

The worst straight shift, other than the rotating shift was a 12 midnight to noon shift.

I’m retired now and it took 6 months to catch up on 31 years of lost sleep.

Of course you’re right.

Time and time and time again, here on FR we see the conservative mantra that “liberalism has destroyed the cities”.

I suggest anyone who actually believes this to go to the cities of Bennington and Burlington, Vermont. Both are full of people who are EXTREMELY liberal in attitudes, and who elect public officials who are, as well. These folks are literally “off-the-wall” liberals.

Yet both Bennington and Burlington are as safe or safer than the locales where most reading this post reside right now.

If you visit those places, there is something which will become immediately obvious to you, vis-a-vis cities like Detroit, Balitimore, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Chicago.

Can you ascertain what it is?

It’s the black undertow. We MUST begin to speak the truth about it. I don’t think anyone as of yet truly realizes the magnatude of this problem. In my opinion, it ranks in the top three major problems this country is going to have to deal with, sooner or later. The Supreme Court is working on an affirmative action(AA) case now. It would be a great start to get rid of that, (AA) then start moving right on down the line.
