Dear Governor Romney,
I’m writing this letter to you the morning after the last of the presidential debates to apologize to you personally for doing absolutely everything I could think of for four years to stop you from becoming the 2012 Republican nominee. I really didn’t know a thing about you, except that you had a lot of kids, were Governor of Massachusetts, and looked like an old movie star…and that you came in second last time to John McCain and somehow I got it into my head that this should have disqualified you from running again this year (or that it meant you’d repeat McCain’s anemic campaign and not even try to give Barack Obama a run for his money). Boy, was I stupid..because after these debates and the campaign you’ve run I have come to realize you’re one of the best political strategists I’ve ever studied…and you are a man who has clearly answered the call of duty when our country needed you the most. I am sorry for not giving you a fair chance until you became the nominee, but I’m beyond grateful I have the opportunity today to do anything I can to help your campaign in this home stretch.
What you have managed to do in this general election will be studied and written about for years because even many Republicans have no clue how smart you’ve played things. A lot of people are going to have pleasantly bewildered faces on November 6th as the electoral college results pour in and it becomes clear why you did everything you did for the last several months; it’s going to be like the end of one of those old M. Night Shyamalan films where the pieces all fit together and the audience finally gets the big “twist”...

I, for one, look forward to Washington DC Inauguration GALAs not being replete with fesitivals of black superstar icons and rappers and whoever the hell else white haters the Obamas can muster in their celebrations of the incredible oneness of the one, the Messiah, the Prophet, Obama.
Yes, he’s smarter than I gave him credit for, and he played this thing in probably the only way it could be. Still, I have my eyes wide open, and am prepared for what will follow if he is elected. He’ll be reaching across the aisle. It won’t be Reagan, but at least disaster may be avoided for a while longer. He deserves all the credit for being smarter than many of us, though.
President Reagan reached across the aisle all the time, I was there. But he’d only make a compromise if it still served the interests of the United States. I’m starting to think that a President Romney might pleasantly surprise us. [fingers crossed]
We’ve railed against Romney for two years now and we made him a better candidate. By supporting everybody but him, he had to fight and scratch to survive. He had to get through the gauntlet of Bachmann, Cain, Perry, Santorum and especially Gingrich. All those debates and battles honed his skills.
We are relentlessly conservative and will continue to be so. Should we have a victory in two weeks, we are not going to rest on our laurels. Politicians should never be comfortable in their seats. When Romney looks over his shoulder, we will be there watching. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty!
We will have our disagreements with Romney from time to time, maybe even more often than that. Those times will be infuriating but it’s thousands of times better than another 4 years of Obama with whom we disagree on absolutely everything.
Romney was my 2nd to last choice (John Huntsman being last)but he’s what we’ve got. He’s going to win and the socialist USA experiment will be over. We can get back to just plain complaining about RINOs.
Yeah, I think Romney was not such a bad choice. Took an online test to see which (then) Republican candidate agreed with me the most and I got Ron Paul 84%, Mitt Romney 80% and Gary Johnson 79%. I support Romney all the way in this race, IIRC, Ronald Reagan pointed out that the guy who “agrees with you 80% of the time is not your enemy but your friend.”
In my own way I have my own version of this... the turning point for me was the RNC speech. I had to take a step back because I believed what he said, was impressed with how he said it and realized I didn’t know anything about him. When he chose Paul Ryan I was even more impressed. The more I listened the more I felt we had finally found someone who, while not being Reagan, had the self awareness, intelligence and ability to lead and lead strongly.
I doubted my new-found admiration for the Governor at the first debate and turned it off after 5 minutes. I had thought he was losing because he was so aggressive. When I turned the TV on the next morning I was shocked to hear he had been declared the winner so decisively. I decided then and there to do more listening and watching... this has been a LOT of fun since.
There are things I don’t like about Romney but I will unapologetic ally vote for him on Nov 6.

Seriously, the gripe against him all along was “he’s not conservative enough”. Yet I’ve always believed in the Buckley Rule of supporting the most conservative candidate THAT CAN WIN. We know now who that candidate is, and as much as it grieved me (too) that Gov. Palin chose not to run, I don’t believe that she, Mr. Cain, Newt, or Rick Santorum could have progressed to this point with anywhere near this kind of margin. They are all good people, and in many ways more conservative, but that is not the entire equation.
Anyone But Obama. Before we can move forward (pun intended) we’ve got to get the vehicle out of the reverse gear it is stuck in, and Romney is the man to do that.

This presumes RINOmney’s stated positions are actually what he believes.
We won’t know that until he takes an action. For now, he’s said what he needed to say - despite his past words and actions - in order to get the nomination and get elected. Governing is another matter that awaits choices.

Yes we did. He won the first debate by showcasing conservatism.
I have been pleasantly surprised by Romney’s strength as a candidate (I thought Obama would destroy him), and I have come to think of him as a good man (I had always thought of him as a slimy politician).
I am worried that he is going to govern to the center left. While he is preferable to Obama, I don’t believe he will take the necessary action to avoid an economic implosion.
My two cents. I should add that I’m Canadian, and can’t vote.

I guess former PUMA Kev has forgotten all about Team Romney's skullduggery against Sarah Palin, which he railed against like the rest of us.
I have to COMPLETELY disagree with the author.
M. Night Shyamalan only had ONE film where all the pieces fit together neatly and the audience finally got to see the big twist at the end. The rest of his films have been a pile of crap.
It wasn’t so long ago that a favorable comment about Romney would have resulted in unceasing zotting or even a ban.
We lost a lot of great members during the primary who will never come back. Some of the best.
Seems we’ve put that behind us now and Romney has earned some much deserved support and accolades.
He wasn’t the first choice of most of us, but I can’t imagine any of the others running a better, more disciplined campaign. That’s vision and leadership for you.
DuJan has grown into one of the ten best political journalists anywhere, not just the US. Amazing, really, since he came out of a “disgruntled Democrat” movement.
