When did we get advertising?
October 26, 2012 | Me

I was gone most of the day running errands, then tonight when I post threads and comments, there are certain words highlighted which, when you rollover the cursor contain an advertisement. Has anyone else noticed this? When did this happen? Just curious...

Check your browser plug-ins and extensions. You may have downloaded something that installed this utility thanks to some fine-print somewhere above a “Yes” button.

Why would it happen **just like that** as I haven’t been to a site I haven’t been to before?

Note what the ad says and Google it. Chances are someone has dealt with it before.

I find that the Spybot Search & Destroy software is pretty effective, or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - both have free versions. Spybot has an "immunize" function that lays out a bunch of data to make thousands of types of malware think that they've already been installed, thus blocking them from your computer. That sounds like what you need given that it came back again.

Assuming you’re running Firefox, hit the menu and look at the Add-ons (Control-Shift-A). Then look at the Plugins. If there’s something you DON’T recognize, that’s probably it.

Play it safe, go to your Control Panel, Programs, Add/Remove Programs, and remove the plugin. . . .

Download "Spybot" I have used it before on my windows machines.

It works well. Should find and fix it. No promises but that is what I would do first.

Malwarebytes, Spybot and perhaps Kaspersky's TDSSKiller if Malwarebytes and Spybot don't get it.
All free, BTW.
