5-gallon buckets (2), bathtub = flushing toilet

frozen water bottles in freezer = drinking

gallon water jugs from the store = cooking, washing hands/face

frozen water bottles in freezer = drinking

We freeze all the gallon jugs our freezer will hold when we prepare for a hurricane.

But if you intend to open and close your freezer after the power goes out to get a drink, you better have a generator and plenty of fuel. To keep a freezer cold without power requires the door not to be opened.

bathtub = flushing toilet

Unless you seal up that drain, it is not likely to hold the water for days.

Most people underestimate the water amount needed for several days supply, especially for a family.

Cheers.

“You have to take responsibility for your own life and your own survival. No-one else cares about you as much as you do, you will never be anyone else’s highest priority in times of trouble”.

True but, who has a second bedroom in Manhattan? /s

“His kitchen counter is littered with opened food cans and boxes, no chance to take out the trash and recycling with the storm raging. “

Hmmm. Didn’t the storm just hit last night?
Unless he is physically disabled (I didn’t read entire article yet), he could have , theoretically, had all the trash taken out on the most recent trash pick-up day and then tried like heck to keep things tidy until the next time. Ever hear of garbage bags? Clear the counter and put the trash in a frigging trash bag!!!

How many cans and boxes of food did he need to open yesterday? I’d stock up before the storm and then eat sparingly. It is not like he is going to be out moving through the city much, burning calories over the next few days. People raid the stores just before a storm and then eat everything in the house in a couple of hours. I’ve never understood this!

I want to get a lay-down freezer for the garage. I could fill the bottom with water bottles, jugs covered with cardboard and put food on top of that.

I ordered one of those last year and informed everyone in the house how it will work, if it comes to that.

I’ll fill the tub and that bathroom will not be used for anything but getting water. They will use the other bathrooms and we’ll be using the one off the garage so the house won’t smell.

Heavy will get one flush and urine will only be flushed along with heavy waste.

There is plenty of rubbing alcohol, H2O2 and other hand rubbing disinfectants to use for washing hands and we can make do with plenty of hand and dish towels.

If it comes to using the tub for resevor I’ll also drain the hot water heater into containers which we have plenty of.

That should give us 150 gallons. 65 in the tub, 50 from the hot water heater stored in containers and 50 more after the hot water refills.

Additionally, I have two Lifesaver bottles and can use Coleman showers to transport 10 gallons at a time if I have to walk. Yeah, I know it’s 80 pounds but I’m pretty sure I can hack a 4 mile hike at most to many places where this water in reserve, lakes, rivers and springs.

Oh, and I live on a golf course with three lakes alone not to mention the 5 water resivor barrel thingy’s within 1 mile three of which are on the property.

I’m guessing they hold 100,000 gallons each. I have spied spigots on the bottom.

I have all the water marked on a paper map so I think we’ll be okay.

Just gotta keep safe from the miscreants that appear in these situations but there are two cops behind me. One is on the SWAT team.

There is another a block over and I understand there are at least three others within the community.

Then there are the two CHP motorcycle cops that live here.

Pretty sure we’ll all hook up and form a unit for sentry to keep out undesirables.
