I’m debating increasing my pretax contributions to retirement. I know the investments will likely be dropping over the next 4 years, but it should decrease my taxable income. That is if I am not mistaken in my thinking.

Another one from FReeper Mad Dawgg (via bolobaby):

“One of the best ways I’ve found to “starve the Beast” is to “legally” lower the amount the Gub’ment withholds from your paycheck.

Just take the maximum allowable deductions. Yes, it may mean you have to “pay” come tax time BUT if just 10% of the people who receive paychecks would do this it would put a severe crimp on the Washington “looter’s” cash flow! Just stash the extra cash somewhere and come tax time if you need it to pay Uncle Obama well then you have it.”

Don’t forget the library - Excellent source of free materials!! Reading, CD’s. everything.

It's not free. It costs taxes -- taxes everyone in this discussion are trying to avoid paying. Irony, thy name is Free Republic.

OK... back to lurking.

What ever happened to "buy American"? Besides, Toyota make that most hated of vehicles, the lib-driven Prius!

Get a frigging clue. It ain't 1973 any more. The Toyota Camry has been the most American car for several years now-- both in parts content and assembly. Most so-called "imports" are more American than many big-3 sh@tboxes, and they aren't made by Bolshevik union thugs.

Rather than address the point of the comment, you are attempting to discredit the message by attacking me.

How typically liberal!

But....I know that you are a **professional** educator and would **never** use this debating tactic with your emotionally and educationally immature students. To do so would be emotional child abuse, especially since it would be coming from a person in power.

For as often as we see you use this on Free Republic, I am completely confident that you would never do this in your government owned and run, socialist-funded, single-payer, and godless classroom ( compulsory for all students whose parents can not pay the jizya needed for their escape.)

1) I live in your head rent free 24/7/365.

2) You wake up with the night sweats calling my name.

3) I can still rely on the advice of Dr. Johnny fever: "It is bad luck to take advice from a crazy person."

BTW the topic was going Galt and avoid paying taxes, not whining about a system that you refuse to attempt to fix.

For working stiffs, like me, increase your withholding dependents by two or three and that’ll lessen the amount being sent to the coffers. You can't do anything about FICA or Medicare/Medicaid, but you can with your withholding.

I’m going to add a very strong word or two of caution regarding the above advice.

First of all the number of allowances from withholding you claim on your W-4 do not necessarily have anything to do with the number of dependents you can claim on your 1040. What you claim on your W-4 are withholding “allowances” not “dependents”. In other words, a person who is single with no dependents could claim any number of withholding allowances above the one for themselves depending on their personal tax situation, i.e. they might have a good number of allowable deductions (losses on investments, the purchase of a home, moving expenses, medical expenses, etc.) so that when they file their taxes for that tax year they are still not under withheld. Conversely a married person with four dependents might claim Married but withhold at the higher Single rate and 0 allowances if they have other income not related to employment, capital gains on investments or a second job.

When you file your taxes if you owe more than $1,000, you may be charged a penalty for underwithholding plus interest from the time the IRS determines the tax should have been withheld and paid. However, if your withholding from the previous year was equal or above your tax liability for the previous year, you would not be penalized under the “Safe Harbor” rule.

But if you miscalculate and cannot pay the taxes owed when you file your return on or before April 15th, the IRS will charge you additional penalties plus interest for every month the tax balance remains unpaid. I know, been there done that, not pretty.

Also be advised that if you knowingly file a fraudulent W-4, i.e. claim an unreasonable number of allowances or claim “Exempt” when you are not entitled to, you could face a fine up to $1,000 and a year in jail.

I am a certified payroll professional. I sometimes see employees claim well over 10 allowances (I’ve seen 99 allowances) on their W-4 or claim “Exempt” from federal withholding. Under the current law, I do not have to report this to the IRS as used to be the case. Unless the form is known to me to be fraudulent; i.e. they modify the form to take out or add language, give me a form other than the IRS form W-4, fail to sign it or verbally tell me they are filing a fraudulent form so as to evade paying taxes, I am to accept it without question. I will however “gently caution” anyone claiming over 10 allowances or claiming “Exempt” to be sure that they understand the consequences of under withholding, but as we in payroll say, “We are not the W-4 police” and if someone underwithholds, that’s on them not the employer. I'm also not a tax advisor and cannot give personal tax advice other than to ask, "are you sure this is what you want to do? I've found that sometimes people misread the W-4 instructions regarding claiming “Exempt” to think that if they didn’t owe taxes the previous year, they can claim “Exempt” when what that actually means is that they didn’t have to “pay” any taxes in the previous year (100% of all taxes withheld were refunded) and don’t expect to have to “pay” taxes in the current year – very rare except in such cases of part time employees under 18 who are fulltime students and some retirees, very low income earners. When I explain that, many employees have told me, "no, that's not what I want" and give me a corrected W-4.

Also be aware that if the IRS determines you have filed a fraudulent W-4 or have in a previous year, claimed too more allowances that you were not entitled to, the IRS may send your employer a “lock in letter” in which the IRS will determine the number of withholding exemptions allowed that stay in force until the employer receives a notice from the IRS that the “lock in” is no longer in effect.

One more word of caution: if the so called “Bush tax cuts” are left to expire, if you had more than $2,500 in FSA withholdings in the previous year or any number of the coming Fiscal Cliff/“Taxmageddon” provisions, whatever you had withheld in the previous year, even if your income and number of dependent have not changed, it may not be enough in 2013.

The best advice; with all considered, is to have only enough withheld as to neither owe taxes nor get a refund when you file your return. You don’t want to get a big refund (that’s the government getting an interest free loan on your money) but you need to be careful to not be underwithheld and end up owing penalty and interest over and above the tax. That takes some work and planning and may mean you might need to change your withholding allowances for 2013 and or change them based on changes in income or anticipated deductions during the year.

If you use Turbo Tax or H&R Block software to file your taxes, they have some good W-4 calculators. There are also other free calculators available on the web like paycheckcity.com or your employer’s payroll processors like ADP.

The topic is about starving the beast.

One of the best ways to do that is to remove one’s child from the government's owned and run, godless ( therefore religiously NON-neutral), socialist-funded, single-payer K-12 schools.

If there are fewer kids being indoctrinated in the government Marxist indoctrination camps, there is **more** opportunity to reduce taxes for all and to have money returned to the taxpayer's pocket.

Since you are evidently one of the smarter professional teachers, I am certain that you should be able to understand this simple economic principle. But....Maybe they don't teach basic economics in the nation's colleges of education. Given the rock bottom SAT scores of most education majors, economic principles may be a little much for them.

that you refuse to attempt to fix.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

It is impossible to fix a single-payer, compulsory-use, and socialist program. Programs such as this need to be abolished and privatized. Our Marxist controlled, government owned and run, socialist-funded, single-payer, and compulsory-use indoctrination camps ( misnamed “schools”) can not be reformed. We must begin the process of privatizing K-12 education.

One of the definitions of “Going Galt” is starving the beast. One of the most effective ways to do that is to remove one’s child from the government indoctrination camps. It has been estimated that it costs up to $17,000/per child/year. Whew! That's a **lot** of money that can be returned to our nation's citizens and businesses. This is money that can be invested in privately owned and run schools, as well as business and investments. This means **lots** of private sector jobs, the life-blood of the economy.

Since you are one of the smarter government teachers, I am certain you understand this principle. As for you colleagues?...Well!... They weren't the brightest bulbs on our nation's college campuses.

Well, that is true: Public schools are primarily funded through property taxes so they have entitlement to the school system. Every one of us that went to public school can thank our neighbors for their taxes; property taxes, sales taxes, etc, that funded those schools. We can argue if the school system funding is proper or even if public school systems are proper but the people that were taxed for the school systems have every right to send their kids to the school. It is why I believe after school activities that serve the community are proper, such as craft fairs, Boy Scouts, etc.; those are our buildings. We all pay for them.

I think we need to try and quantify some potential impact we can make on the beast by going Galt. I’ve added up at least $7,800 in spending that I can easily chop out. (I’ve already acted on things like work-forced charity, gym membership, cable etc...) I can probably come up with more with a more careful look at food spending and other entertainment items.

Obviously small business owners and the like can make a much bigger impact, but even in my small case 60 million * $7,800 = $468 billion annual impact on the economy. Now I’m wondering if there would be a mulitplier to this effect?

Everyone **loves** their favorite socialist-funded, single-payer, and compulsory use welfare program.

Government schools are the very definition of government welfare.

And...In a decade or two **all** of the arguments used to defend our nation's system of single-payer, socialist-funded, compulsory-used K-12 schools will be used to defend **Obamacare**!!!

As the mother of teen/young adult boys I wanted to stand up and cheer at every word you wrote!!
It’s all about my kids now. My husband is 55 and I’m 50, gone is any hope that I can get back to any kind of career. I have a computer science degree and make $13/hour doing something completely unrelated.
If my husband were offered early retirement, we would take it. We will be very mobile and go where our boys can have some real hope for the future.
I already warned them that wherever they end up, their old man and old lady will follow them. We will not live in the same house with them, but we will move within driving distance from them. They seem okay with that! lol

Also reduce your paycheck withholding legally. Many folks claim less dependents and deductions then they are legally entitled to. Then they tend to get "refunds" on their taxes. All you are doing is giving Barry Hussein and the Looters in Washington the use of your money for a year for Free.

Why? Use the money now and deny Washington its use for a year. put it in the bank or pay down a debt. It won't change your overall tax burden. If you owe taxes you'll just pay them on April 15th instead of early. If not you get to keep your money without giving Uncle Sam an interest free loan.

I told them both stay as long as you want - no charge…it breaks my heart….we were married and in a house at their age - but it cant happen for them now

…..next, starts the inflation

Why not claim 47 million! That's how many are on food stamps that we're paying for!

Your synopsis is correct, but adding two or more dependents shouldn't change ones tax withholding enough to hurt them come April 15.

Again, you are confusing claiming “dependents” on your tax return with claiming “allowances” or what is also known as withholding “exemptions” on your form W-4 for employment withholding. They are not one and the same. And BTW, I would have loved to have claimed my 3 cats and my slacker niece who I often loaned, i.e. gave money to, even when she and her two kids lived with me for over 2 years and I basically supported them, on my tax return, and I would have also loved to have claimed half of the City of Baltimore as “dependents” when I lived there, but I couldn’t.

On your W-4, you can claim as many withholding allowances/exemptions as you want, reduce your federal tax withholding to zero if you want; that is until you file your return and end up owing more than $1,000. And it doesn’t matter if you can write the US Treasury a check when you file your return on or before April 15th, if you exceed the $1,000 amount, the IRS can, except under some circumstances, still penalize and charge you interest for under withholding during the year. They can also fine you, even put you in jail for filing a fraudulent W-4 (although I don’t think that happens often except in cases where people repeatedly claim ridiculous and unsupportable number of withholding exemptions year after year as in an attempt to “evade” paying tax). Word to the wise; tax “avoidance” is perfectly legal as long as it is done legally, tax “evasion” however is always a crime comes with serious consequences.

That and they (IRS) can send your employer a “lock in letter” that states no matter what W-4 you have on file or what form W-4 “Bushbacker1” gives you after receipt of this letter, you will withhold “Bushbacker1” as Married with 1 Exception, period, until you receive a letter from us (the IRS) telling you otherwise.

Depending on one’s financial circumstances, the number of dependent and deductions they can legally claim on their 1040, pre-tax payroll deductions, etc., yes, absolutely claiming two or more “dependents” exemptions could put some folks in a situation of being seriously under withheld. Take for example a single person, un-married, no children, no mortgage interest, no other allowable deductions on their 1040, does not have any pre-tax payroll deductions for section 125 cafeteria plans, does not contribute to his employer’s 401k plan through pre-tax dollars but makes say a salary of 30k or more a year and has several thousands in an interest baring savings account, …. claiming even 3 or 4 exemptions on their W-4 could very well put them in a position of owing substantially more than $1,000 on April 15th.

I’m not advocating “feeding the beast” but am strongly advising you and everyone on this thread to be very cautious when “playing games” with their withholding on employment income.

What you really want to do is have the “Goldilocks” amount withheld from your paycheck – not so much that you get a big refund, i.e. provide the government with what is in effect an interest free loan on your money that you could have invested during the year, even in a savings account with a very small return – that is still a return; and not so little that you owe any more than a few dollars, no more than a $100 or so when you file your return. This takes some work and planning but it can be done. I advise people to look at the YTD’s on their paystubs, estimate their current and expected tax situation and estimate where they will be, each and every quarter and adjust their W-4 withholding accordingly as to get to the magic “Goldilocks Zone” at year end. For instance; last year I got a $10 refund from the IRS and owed $8 in PA State and local taxes. That’s where you want to be - as close to zero taxes refunded or owed as possible.

As a payroll professional with over 30 years of experience, I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen a good number of folks claiming over 10 exemptions or more (50 to 99 exemptions when I knew they were single or married with 1 kid) or claiming “Exempt” on their form W-4, even as I “gently” asked them if they really wanted to do that, only to get, sometimes several years later, an IRS and or State treasury wage garnishment and an IRS lock in letter for those very same people. Sadly I often see some of those very same people get child support orders, wage garnishments for defaulted student loans…trust me; it’s not pretty.

Recently we hired a new employee in sales. And it only took less than two weeks to get the child support withholding order (child support orders always take first priority, no matter when it is received). Then less than a week later, I got a California wage garnishment for unpaid state taxes, then another for local CA taxes, then an IRS garnishment and finally another child support order to enroll his child in all available health benefits. After the child support orders, there is not enough “discretionary” income to take anything for any of the other garnishments unless he earns a big commission in which case most of that will be taken in garnishment. Meanwhile, penalties and interest continue to accrue for every month that he doesn’t earn enough to have anything other than child support taken out. I feel bad for the guy but he’s in a hole so deep, he’ll be feeling this pain for a very, very long time.

Even absent child support or creditor or student loan wage garnishments, you really don’t want to get into a hole with the IRS and or on your state on taxes owed.

I’ve run across people like you who say; ”I want the absolute minimum amount or even zero to be withheld from my pay and I will just work it out and pay my taxes on April 15th.” Word to the wise – while I understand and empathize, this “tax strategy” often it does not end well.

Thanks.

What people need to realize is that even if their income and number of dependents, overall financial situation does not change in 2013, the coming fiscal cliff; Taxmageddon, might mean that even if whatever they had withheld from employment income in 2012, years from 2008 forward, it may not be enough for 2013.

Now (2013) is not the time to have substantially less withheld from employment income if they think that by doing so, they are “giving it to the man”, “going Galt, “not feeding the beast”. Those that do may be in for a very nasty surprise on April 15, 2014.

I’ve done the same thing as you. However, I’ve gone one step further — I’m unfriending anyone who might prove to be an INFORMER (including one of my sisters) — yes, I believe that word will be coming back into vogue in the next year or so.

My advise would be to not step in a restaurant at all...and to avoid drive-through food, too.

Not sure I follow that logic. occasionally support local restaurants or if fast food make it Chic-Fil. don't stiff waitresses unless they make snarky comments about supporting Obama. when getting contracting & service work done use cash. in fact move more towards cash transactions

Better yet. Kill two birds with one stone.

Make only available to monthly donors or donors over a certain amount.
