With Proposal 4 soundly defeated, the forced unionization of Michigan's home-based caregivers seems finally to be on its last legs.
The Service Employees International Union backed the constitutional amendment plan that would have locked the unionization scheme into the constitution and preserved the $6 million a year it takes from the Medicaid checks of the elderly and disabled in Michigan.
But the SEIU's scheme should now end in February when the current union contract expires. Proposal 4 lost by a wide margin. Gov. Rick Snyder earlier this year signed a law that home-based caregivers are not state employees and therefore not eligible to be unionized but a federal judge later allowed the scheme to continue.
"Finally, there's a light at the end of the tunnel for those, including family members, who have been seeing union dues taken from the checks they receive to help provide home care," said Patrick Wight, senior legal analyst for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. "It will soon stop."
Since 2005, the SEIU has taken more than $32 million from home-based caregivers.
Voters clearly saw that Proposal 4 was about more than safe, affordable home care that Proposal 4 supporters promoted in misleading commercials.
So did Gov. Snyder, who in addition to signing a bill against the scheme, last week named a new slate of members to the Michigan Quality Community Care Council board. In doing so, he ended the dummy employer's longstanding practice of being a rubber stamp for the SEIU.
The primary impact of Snyder's action is that MQC3 will now represent his position on issues that arise instead of the union's position. It should make it highly unlikely that the union will get another contract extension.
In fact, the “dues skim” could actually end sooner than that. In addition to the governor replacing the SEIU-friendly board members, the Mackinac Center Legal Foundation has filed a legal action, asking that the forced unionization be decertified. That case is being reviewed by the Michigan Employment Relations Commission.
According to the Secretary of State's office, 56 percent of voters said no to Proposal 4, while 44 percent wanted it added to the state constitution.
Haven’t we yet learned that votes are meaningless? My money says that SEIU will now use its clout to tie this up in the courts until they have the result they want.
The courts will overturn it.

The unions will try to find a way to get this into the courts.
Those unionized caregivers, if declared state employees, are illegally uderpaid and not bein given their due benefits as state employees. They should sue if a court forces them to keep doing it, so they can get some real money from the deal too. lol.

The vote will be ignored by the legislators and will probably outlaw the Board and restore the contract for the SEIU. Whenever I go into a restaurant, night club, bar, lounge, I always ask my server if they belong to the union. If they say yes, I leave. You should see the look on their faces, it’s great. That’s the only way to beat these unions. Don’t use their members and see what happens. But the general public is too stupid to do something so simple and it would be inconvenient for them. It’s small potatoes for me to do it because I’m pretty much alone, but it’s fun.

What’s odd to me is that 44 percent of Michigan voted to make this blatant theft a part of their state constitution.

Naturally the pro union proposals were deliberately deceptive as were the ads for them. The supporters of even worse prop 2 even changed their name at least once to be more “inclusive”.
They went from “Save our Jobs” to “Save working families”.
America has no idea of the bullet that was dodged with the defeat of prop 2. That was going to be the blueprint for union power grabs in other states. It would have effectively given the union veto power over the state legislature.
I take it you're not from Michigan. I am. Michigan is heavily union. UAW + lots of public sector unions. I'm frankly surprised that the same people who voted for the Kenyan Marxist defeated the union proposal. I haven't read the details of it, but it must have been pretty bad.
On the other hand, 9.3% unemployment and climbing does have an effect on people.
True and as I was talking with my mom she mentioned that she heard on TV that Obama has already pledged to push through laws preventing any more states from becoming “right to work”. She couldn’t remember the source, so I don’t know if it is accurate.
But lets say it is, what should be a states right to vote on and decide, will be squelched by an overbearing Fed, i.e. payback to the unions from Obama for their support.
