The American Red Cross, which bills itself as “the world's largest humanitarian network,” is pushing back against critics of its response to Hurricane Sandy, with the head of the organization saying its relief effort has been “near flawless” despite criticism from stranded storm victims and elected officials.
Two weeks after the superstorm slammed the East Coast, leaving millions of residents without power and in need of food, warmth and shelter, the venerable nonprofit has taken a public battering over what many victims and some officials saw as a lackluster and unfocused response.

I don’t give to the Red Cross.
Would rather give my money to the Salvation Army.
It’s about time that the Red Cross actually got the criticism it deserves since it’s more concerned with feathering the nests of it’s executives than with helping disaster victims at this point.
But you’re right that the only reason they’re getting any heat is to defect attention from the terrible job that Odumbo’s FEMA is doing.

I totally agree about the Baptist men.
But I wonder what people think the Red Cross and FEMA’s function are.
Neither organization is going to come in and provide manpower. They are not going to be there the morning after a disaster of this scope and “fix it”.
The first line of defense is...the individual. There were many people that could have evacuated but didn’t. I understand. The people that could not evacuate didn’t, the old and infirm, need help. No doubt about it.
I think that lots of folks in our country think life in the real world is like a movie..where all problems are solved in 2 hours. It ain’t that way folks.
No, I would think that FEMA and the local & state governments would be the people in charge. The Red Cross, like the Salvation Army and hundreds of others, are private charities.

Totally agree. This is a red herring to keep people’s mind off the poor job Obama’s doing.
On day 1 the savation army gets there with blankets, tents, food, and water. On day 2, the salvation army has medical care. On day 3 the red cross shows up with coffe, hot chocolate, and flyers on how wonderful the red cross is.

Back in 1996 I worked for a week with the Texas Baptist Men, doing community service, as they were doing the interior work (sheetrock, etc.) for a large building at a church here in the DFW area. ........Same guys hauled truck-loads of supplies and mobile kitchens to the Gulf Coast of Texas after Katrina and Rita hit, where they fed and provided needed goods to thousands each day.
Red Cross sucks, as I’ve read that about 80-90% of money goes to administration; not aid to the needy. ..Folks in NY on Staten Island have been on TV complaining that the Red Cross and FEMA abandoned them.
That's simply not true. Roughly 8% of their money goes to administrative and fund raising expenses. Why not do some research instead of repeating lies?
I know a lot of folks who have been through tragedies who have nothing good to say about the Red Cross. It seems that the Red Cross is a fundraising organization that does a little bit of light disaster relief on the side.
The Red Cross does the most good for its executives. It is as bureaucratic as the federal government.
Give your donations to individual families or churches in a locality hit by disaster. Do not give to any national organization except the Salvation Army.
