“It’s very dirty here, all the apartments have rats,” says Catalina Espinosa, 34, who opens her door on the fifth floor carrying an infant son with one arm while a daughter peeks out from behind her.
Three stories below, Tino Torres, 40, has lived with rodents for all his five years in this building at 1985 Amsterdam in Washington Heights. “The rats crawl from the kitchen into my bedroom,” he says.
For many uptown immigrants, coming to America hasn’t meant an upgrade in housing. “In the last five years, it’s one of the worst buildings I have seen,” Luis Manuel Tejada, executive director of the community nonprofit Mirabal Sisters, says about 1985 Amsterdam.
Eighty percent of its residents are illegal immigrants, says Tejada, and the landlord has threatened to report them to immigration authorities if they complain about conditions there. In practice, illegal immigrants can’t be deported if they don’t break the law, but since few are aware of their rights, this kind of harassment has become common.
“Being undocumented is like living in the dark,” says Tejada. “They don’t want to be exposed.”
The residents of 1985 Amsterdam are among the few uptown resident who have mounted a campaign to improve their living conditions. For a year, they’ve worked with the Mirabal Sisters to force the landlord, Moshe Samova, to maintain the building. Tenants tell stories of uncollected trash, cracked floors, exposed electrical wires in apartments and defective heaters. Samova ranks 37th on NYC’s Worst Landlords Watchlist, compiled by Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, with 226 reported infractions in this one building.

I have seen buildings like this—seen a lot of them.
They are working to get the landlord to get rid of the rats.
If they are working let me ask this question.
Are they working to keep the trash in it’sproper place? Are they working to keep the area of the dumpster clean?
How much rat poison have they bought and put out.
How about the cockroach’s have they sprayed for them?
No matter how a Landlord woks to keep his building up if the tenants do not help the task is impossible.
If rats apepar at my home I would get rid of them by buying some rat poison and putting it out spraying for cockroach’s and keeping trash to a minimum.
These people come her and expect to be serviced.
Not that they are alone in that. Every ghetto has the same problem, but little is done by those who live there, they want someone else to solve the problem.
The average welfare family is costing taxpayers $60,000 a year I hear (most goes to bureaucracy of course).... “living in the dark” my big toe.

My wife has a friend who has been in Mexico since she got off the dole here in the USA. Her husband, a USA citizen Latino born here has diabetes and is not doing well.
This guy’s wife REFUSES to work and when calling my wife recently wanted to know now that they are back in CA where the the taxpayers of CA are going to give them.
It’s BS, they are mostly here for work and the dole. They want to be on our system. Since most are second grade drop outs they end up on the dole.
How about no dole for twenty years and if they are found on the dole they get to the first in line for deportation and a life long ban on coming here? Works for me.

So a whole bunch of common criminals break into my country, Steal my Money, Food,Jobs and anything else they can get their hands on, and now they complain that all the stuff they stole isn’t good enough for them?? Maybe you CRIMINALS should go back to your own country and reform it, Oh I forgot YOU ARE ALL COWARDS as well as CRIMINALS and THIEVES.
They should have all their property seized, they should be jailed and soon deported. They are ILLEGAL aliens. Get out of our country.
And what about the Landlord?? After all they willfully and knowingly accepted payments from people who had No Legal Right to work in this country, which All of it was Illgotten Gains, This is the definition of MONEY LAUNDERING
