I guess there was a time when unions did some good. I know my great grandfather was a big supporter of them, but frankly I can't see where they do anything good at all anymore. From the time I was a kid, all I've ever understood about them was that they're associated with organized crime, and they're physically violent and proud of it. But over the last couple of years I've learned a little bit more, and I have to say I'm not at all enthusiastic about what I've seen.Cloward-Piven. Push policies that make things worse and worse and worse. That way everyone will see the wisdom of your policies and be eager to march toward a socialist utopia where no one ever works at all.
I think you’re very insightful...
I worked in the factory doing everything from working on the conveyor lines, driving a forklift, working the cup making machines, repairing the conveyor system, you name it.
I was working there to save money to go to College (my first time) and because I worked in the factory that also made the "Sweetheart Cones" I had to be a member of the Bakers and Confectioner's union - which is now part of the Union that caused Hostess to go under.
I cannot think of a more WORTHLESS union than the Bakers & Confectioners union. Took $16 out of my paycheck every two weeks and did NOTHING in return.
In fact, it was the Bakers & Confectioner's union's rules that cost a man his life at Sweetheart Cup.
The union's rules ensured that a known DRUNK at the factory was allowed to drive a clamp forklift. Those forklifts lifted 4,500+ pound rolls of paper and loaded them onto the cup machines. Those rolls were HUGE, and stacked 5-7 rolls high.
This DRUNK that the Union said had to be trained to drive the clamp forklift because it was "his turn in line" ended up running this huge clamp forklift into a stack of paper rolls, knocking them over and killing someone.
I saw it happen and I quit that day.
Like I said, I cannot think of a more WORTHLESS and I'll add CORRUPT union than the "Bakers & Confectioners" union.
Yea, Union wins, workers lose. I can’t imagine giving up a paycheck for a principle, at least not for an 8 percent principle. Because of the selfishness of a few 18,000 lose their jobs. Gee, aren’t unions wonderful.
Hostess is/was one of the bigger clients at my own job. Thsi affects my own job, too. The people I talked to from hostess deal in data and sales. They made regular salaries and are very very nice people. One guy has been with the co. for many years, is fairly old and may have a tough time finding new work.
And from what I understand, they were offered a 25% stake in the company as a concession for the 8% paycut.
Legalized extortion....
Hah! Hah! Take that, capitalist thugs! You one-percenters!
Stickin’ it TO the MAN!
A majority of these idiots are comfortable with an idea of loosing their jobs. Why work for a couple a bucks if you can do nothing and still has your 1.5 bucks? Welfare is a problem, ruined work ethics and basic human honor as well.
That is their shame. Not stupidity, not malice, not depravity. But their absolute refusal - absolute refusal - to learn.
And what is it they refuse to learn?
That denial doesn't work.
Even God won't forgive that.
In my earlier days I was a member of both the United Steelworkers and later the Boilermakers.
They seemed to exist only to obstruct the company and protect the lamest of employees. Never did much of anything for me.
We were on strike at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co.(17,000 blue collars at the time) for 13 weeks and extracted a $1.00/hr pay raise. Meanwhile I volunteer repo’ed my new vehicle, etc. Big win, eh?
Unions long ago passed their hour of need and drove manufacturing elsewhere.
Until such a time as welfare monies run out. I hope I’m wrong, but I foresee a day when we have rioting in our streets.
The most worthless by far are the government employee unions. Government unions are money laundering systems where the public officials grant raises and benefits to the union employees and then receive donations for their next election from these same union members to whom they just gave a raise. And the taxpayer has to pay for it all.
Union folks don’t want to own a piece of the company, that would make them part of the anti-union establishment. When you are unionized mentally, you are so against being part of the company that employs you that you would rather starve then become part of the “company”.
Union members are, for the most part, mental midgets, brainwashed by their leaders.
Moveon.org got the memo. Sent out a new email today. It’s the 2% now. 1% was soooooo before the election. Wonder when the monies start to dry up it will be the 53%? Soon, the takers will be so top heavy the whole stinkin’ scam will topple over.
Well, it probably won’t take long.
Most employers will screen out union oriented workers in their hiring process.
My guess is that the Hostess plants in Closed Shop states will not reopen with new owners. Production and distribution of Hostess brands will move to right to work states.
And these are the direct impacts, what about the in-direct hits to other businesses and vendors?

C’mon. Less welfare money for state = more burden on industries = lesser wages for honest employees = lesser welfare money considered acceptable by freeloaders to make them happy (cheaper) Dem voters. This policy may allow them to twice Obamabot ranks per same allowance.
My employer doesn’t discriminate against minorities, women, the aged, but if your work history shows you were in a union, you’re not going to get hired.
You wouldn’t think the Administration and liberals would be crowing at the news. Aren’t these food nazis always trying to put “empty calorie snack foods” out of business because of alleged links to obesity, etc.? This should be a big victory for Moochelle and the gang.
So what if a small city no longer has jobs anymore? We got twinkies and ding dongs out of the mouths of children and that should be cause to celebrate for any food nazi statist.
How many or how few “Oven Operator” positions will these people be competing for, 40?
Either that or Obama will move in to nationalize it and give a sizeable stake to the union, like at GM.
I figured that at the rate they drive jobs overseas and send American workers to the bread lines, their real money is in overseas sweatshop operations and collecting political rewards (e.g. more union contracts) for creating and nurturing welfare-dependent Demoncrat voters. And as an extra bonus, the sweatshop escapees flood the border looking for better than slave wages, thereby driving up the Demoncrat voter rolls even further.
Sadly, I agree.
Got me there!
They rejected 25%
Let’ nationalize. Government Hostess! How’s that sound? Next step government twenny dollar cathouses, division of... Government Hostess!
“And these are the direct impacts, what about the in-direct hits to other businesses and vendors?”
My company will lose revenue. Hostess was one of our larger supplier accounts.
Rush said today that there are indications that the union is counting on the Obama administration stepping and taking over the bankruptcy and eventually turning the company over to the union. We will have Government Hostess, GH
no we already have a government hostess in Florida, her name is Jill Kelley.
When I was 15 years old and a sophomore our teacher told us that when he was in his teens he had a job where the idiot union bosses held out for WEEKS for a fricken NICKLE raise. [My teacher was smart enough to quit to find another job] - The teacher said “those idiots never figured out that the wages they lost for being without work for weeks never filtered through the union thug’s stupid heads.” He said that there had been times where the unions had their place and did some good — (he was talking about things like the abuses of the triangle shirt waist factory, etc. — and owners cutting corners with safety issues) -— but he’d been amazed at the sheer stupidity of some of them — especially the so-called union leaders. Another friend of mine’s grandfather had been a founding member of the New York Iron worker’s union. HE eventually quit because he said that a lot of the union leaders were “As corrupt as some of the bas***d owners we were trying to fight.”
It would only be symbolic; generics will fill up the slack pretty quickly.
By the way a frozen Twinkie or generic creme filled sponge cake bar is pretty nice.
You mean you supplied to Hostess?
My mother used to work for Wonder Bread. She was the comptometer operator/bookeeper, who balanced all the receipts and kept all the books for the drivers. They weren’t the brightest group in the world and she had to do all the book keeping for them.
She did keep the bread drawer stocked with hostess products, though. At that time, they also had a line of restaurant products, like a strawberry short cake that was loaded with whipped cream and strawberries. It was probably the same cake that was in the twinkies and the pies were probably the same as the fried pies that they sold individually, except baked instead fried.
She kept the drawer for me because I was so severely under weight that the doctor told her to feed me whatever I would eat. Mostly we ate the brownies. Twinkies were never a favorite.
No...I work with data flows between retailers and suppliers. (costs, sales, deliveries, invoices) I am the middle man. They are the “supplier” to me. I guess I should have explained better. :-)
oh so like a wholesale person
I too could not eat enough to budge past rail-skinny as a kid. I wish I had that problem now, topping the scale at close to the breaking point.
absolute refusal - to learn.
Sorry, you are wrong; it is not that they (liberals) refuse to learn it is that they CANNOT BE WRONG! I have seen them in govt and had to deal with them over me in the private sector. No matter how badly the idea fails it is not a bad idea; we just didn’t do enough of it!
Just before the holidays - all those folks out of work. This is a human nightmare!!!
Non government unions can eventually drive the employer into bankruptcy oblivion and their selves out of a job because the employer simply runs out of money. Government unions on the other hand can never run their employers into bankruptcy....there is always more settlement money either by printing it, taxing it or “borrowing it”.....viola! Perpetual unions!
I think that I wrecked my metabolsim by just not eating much. I hated my mother’s cooking, then when I was in seventh grade my Dad had a serious heart attack and my mother had to go back to work. I had to do all the cooking and i ate even less. I can’t believe anyone ate what I cooked. We ate the junk food though.
I only weighed about 40 pounds in first grade and I weighed 95 pounds when I graduated from high school. Not skinny anymore, though.
Or some REPUBLICAN stopped them from doing it 100% as planned.
That’s the usual excuse.
I take that your teacher was not a NEA surporter?
“Twinkies were never a favorite.”
!! Baw! Boo Hoo Hoo Hoo! !! :o(
