Some simple gift suggestions for Christmas

A lady didn’t have time to purchase gifts for her circle of friends, so she rushed to the store and bought a box of pretty Christmas cards, and mailed them without even reading the message inside. When she finally had time to relax on New Year’s, she picked up one of the unused cards and to her horror she read the message she had sent: “This Christmas card is just to say, a little gift is on the way!”

In all of our rushing around this Christmas season, let’s not forget the little gift, the baby Jesus, whom God sent to become the big gift for our eternal life. And let’s ask ourselves what gifts we are giving this Christmas. May I suggest a few?

The gift of time. Spend time doing things that matter– with your family, in worship, and in personal reflection.

Spiced blueberry maple pecan conserve.

Wow, please put me on your Christmas list. Our trees didn't make pecans this year. I already gave out jams and jellies a few months ago and knew at the time I should have waited until Christmas. I usually make gifts from recycled, refurbished, free and found stuff. It sounds awful but even the inlaws squabble over them with "ooh, I want that one!" and "hey, those are my colors!" Sorry, folks, but this year I can't get motivated. Bah humbug.

The gift that seems to last for my elders is one of shared past. I locate old photos of family events or shared moments and copy/mount them on a large homemade card. Inside I share the memories which initiate dialog of our time together thus far.

'Get family and friends to write and email you remembrances about your grandfather, then put them in a little scrapbook. Or put them on cards folded up and put into a jar - then when your grandfather’s having a “down” day, he can pull one out to read.'

That's a sweet idea. I might do that. Thanks

Grandfather loves cats. (We have five)

One Christmas I made him a hardcover book with pictures I had taken of all the cats and typed in poems from famous people about cats that seemed appropriate for each of our cats.

(He loved that.)

Here are a few pages:

The white marks at the top are on the photo, not the book. Under the photo it says, 'There are no ordinary cats',- Collette.

I got prints of old time Texas scenes for my mother during her last years, one was of a country church she had attended, another was a street scene of Dublin, TX and she recognized some of the stores in the picture. “Oh, we used to go to that drug store for ice cream!” She was delighted by them.

The artist’s name is George Boutwell, IIRC. He specializes in scenes of Texas and he has a website.

Another thing my mother enjoyed was old country western music by Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline and others. Her hearing was poor but she could close her eyes and remember when those songs were new.

I got my father-in-law a DVD of Tim Conway one year. It is hilarious. They have them in Westerns, Comedy, Music, etc.

Also, the males in my family love those really soft pj pants. Sam’s has them. I’ve seen them in other stores also.

My grandpa loved chocolate covered cherries.

Having been a teetotaler until age 35, I can recommend starting.
Bavarian beer and top shelf bourbon best places to start if starting late.

Hey, he’s done it all with everything else.
