On December 27th, 1979, the Soviet Union launched a full scale invasion of Afghanistan. Within days, thousands of tanks and armoured vehicles, accompanied by tens of thousands of troops, secured Kabul with intentions of expanding the Soviet sphere of influence. This small, unconquerable Muslim country was victim to one of historys most monstrous empires. Mass death on a scale of millions unfolded and Afghanistan slowly became the bombed out caveman husk of a nation that we know today.
But it wasnt defeated.
The resistance against the invasion was dedicated and determined. One of the key operatives, of course, was Osama Bin Laden. From millionaire playboy to hardcore military guerilla, the experience left Osama with an ambitious set of goals.

Bin Laden was not a key operative. He was kind of a bit player who the warriors did not take seriously, but he was able to parlay his involvement into an image that became powerful in the Islamic world.
Alexander the Great conquered the area.
I doubt if he tried to win them over with kindness either.
IMHO, Bin Ladin was something like the figurehead leader of Al Qaeda, and KSM was the COO. I’m still not sure if tha was UBL’s carcass was the one that was dumped overboard into the Arabian Sea.
I thought that every time this gets looked into, that Osama was a small time figure during that period?
Just go to ground zero and behold the massive moslem finger he has raised to the U.S.
Just go to DC and observe or listen to the moslem obscenity about 60-million serfs have bowed down to and embraced as their lord and saviour.
Just travel around the country and try to observe the dozen or so armed moslem terrorist-training communities that have been welcomed by the states with open arms.
Just travel around the country and observe the dozens of new mega-mosques built or in the planning stages.
What a stupid question!
Bush initially talked about his response to 9/11 as this "crusade." Moslem assholes roared, GW pissed himself, and meekly submissively changed his operation's name to something acceptible to his conquerors. He went on national TV and told us the people who killed 3000 innocents on 9/11 were of a "religion of peace." How much more evidence do you people need?
We lost The War on Terror on 9/11/2001. How else to explain electing a third world usurper named Hussein to the Presidency of the United States a scant seven years later? No objective view of subsequent events can reach any other conclusion. BinLaden's role in Afghanistan in the 1980's is the height of irrelevance.
I would add, just try to get on an airliner without your constitutional right to privacy being violated.
He won alright.
Brilliant piece.
I’d say if he was trying to stamp out freedom in the United States, he did indeed win.
Yep! Also having the government listening in on, or storing, the voice and txt useage by the serfs...Or having our own version of the Sturmabteilung now roaming the bus stations, highways, and political events checking everyone's papers...
The reasons that the Founders revolted against King George are orders-of-magnitude more trivial than the tyrannical chains this Nation is going to endure for centuries to come...
