Does Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi desire to become a dictator...or another Abraham Lincoln?

Did that question make you burst out laughing? If so, please be prepared for an even bigger laugh when you watch Atlantic editor Steve Clemons expend brain cells while struggling to figure out the answer to that question in his column. So laughable are the efforts of Clemons trying to come up with what to even slightly aware people is the obvious answer that you might need an oxygen mask due to an inability to catch a breath:

Steve Clemons would fit right in over at the State Department.

I would guess that most writers at The Atlantic know that Egypt is being fought over by new world order NGOs (backed by the U.S. State Dept) and Islamists.

It's a two-pronged history twister.
Libs want to deconstruct Lincoln by equating him with a dictator.
At the same time, they want to elevate and soften 0bama the dictator by comparing him with Abe Lincoln.

It's all part of the leftist agenda to "adjust" our attitudes and how we see history and historical figures.

I’ll let you in on a little secret.

There are quite a few around here who consider this a nonsensical question, since they consider Lincoln to have been a dictator, and one of the very worst.

And that isn’t because they’re leftist.

"Dictator or Abe Lincoln"

Same thing. The title used depends on which side wins.

I can see how the former Confederate states and others could hold that view.
But the left will not side with the Confederation, any parallel view is accidental and born of completely different motivations.
Confederates fought for states rights, among other things. The left don't want that at all. They want world wide conformity and control.
The left want to deconstruct all dead white men from our past. The values they held dear are to be ridiculed and their motives and character questioned.
That's what I think this is about.

To the Editor of the Atlantic Monthly: Morsi wants to be dictator for life. He thinks Abe Lincoln was an Infidel.

What a maroon.

Not really. A lot of Lincoln supporters are happy to call him a dictator. The Cincinnatus kind, not the Caesar kind. A lot of Northerners also were anti-Lincoln. That’s howcome they had to cheat in the ‘64 election.

I quite agree. I just find it interesting that Lincoln is attacked from both the Left and from some who claim to be of the Right.

Yup, they cheated by having the war on an obvious road to victory by the time of the election.

Lincoln won 55% of the popular vote and 212 to 21 in the EC.

Ironically, had (white) southerners voted Lincoln would have lost at least the popular vote, though not perhaps the EC.

Not sure Abe Lincoln would care for this ongoing likeness to Islamic, Christian & Jew hating, anti U.S. Constitutional despots.

Are you sure about that?

Yup.

I disagree with The South Will Rise Again types on a number of issues, but not because they’re leftists.

Leftism, at its core, is an attempt to impose, by force if necessary, equality on humanity. It rejects the American idea because the equality of the Declaration of Independence is limited to legal equality, not attempting to impose social or economic equality.

The South’s counter-revolution in 1860 rejected the American idea from the other side. It rejected the notion that all men are created equal at all, and wanted to install a master race that would rule over slave races, permanently.

That’s an evil ideology, but it isn’t leftist.

When I said there were anti-Lincolners in the North I didn’t mean to imply it was enough for Democrats to win. Cheat they did, anyway. That’s a widely accepted historical fact. Made assurance doubly sure.

Your arguments lose force when you realize:

1. Whatever you think is the American idea, it somehow had slavery for its entire history up to that point
2. As a corrollary to that, the North had slavery too while the South was supposedly fighting against the American idea
3. The counter-revolutionaries’ counterparts offered between secession and war to strengthen slavery, so where was this phantom American idea then?
4. Finally, there was hardly full legal equality in the North even after the war, let alone social and economic.

I’m not rearguing whether or not slavery caused the war. I am saying you’re plain wrong to think legal equality for all races was always the American idea. It wasn’t. It only became so with time. Also, I’m saying if the South was an enemy of that idea and evil for enslaving people, it was not so alone. The North was, too.

You may have fallen for Lincoln’s pet trick of pretending the Republic originated not with ratification of the Constitution, but rather in the foggy realm of the mystical cords of memory represented by the Declaration. He argued so to render secession illegal, not because he so despised inequality.

You care to provide something vaguely resembling evidence that the results of the 1864 elections were not valid?
