After hiring twelve administrators at near six figure incomes to implement the latest pedagogic evaluation fad, this same board is stiffing overworked and under-appreciated teachers whose salaries rank among Florida’s lowest.
Hello! Get rid of the administrative beast and you can balance your budgets and pay your teachers what they deserve. Require the pedagogues to teach one or two classes and you may suddenly see increased appreciation for what the drones in the trenches do on a daily basis! Our local Northeast Ohio newspapers frequently publish “honor rolls” from local schools. After close inspection, I found out that the average list has 51% of the student population of that school listed.
I remember when I was in high school in the 60s, there were maybe 30 or 40 students total on any honor roll list (and they deserved it), and that was for a school of almost 3,500 students.
So how is it possible that 51% of any school’s roster is on the honor roll? If anyone doubts my word, count (if you have the time) the amount of students listed, and the find out how many students are in that school. See if I’m wrong.
If public schools are banned, there will be no more killings in public schools.
Our rural Virginia papers also publish the “honor roll” lists from the local schools, no way do the numbers total 51% of the student population. There are 2 type lists - A/B Honor Roll (all subjects above 86) and Principal’s list which is Straight A (above 94) in everything including electives.
Around here if your name has been on the list in the past, and doesn’t show up the next quarter it means: Buckle down kiddo!
I remember one quarter when she was in 7th grade my daughter didn’t make the honor roll for the very first time - needless to say, it has yet to happen again (she’s now in 9th) she was totally mortified.
So your school systems are more realistic in their reporting of students' progress. Wish ours were. Ours are piled in one huge, non-identifying mess. Principals and administration staff can brag about their success on their resumes while the children's educations go to hell.
Ours are listed by both school and grade, nothing non-identifying about it.
Dealing with "self esteem" or worrying about "hurting feelings" are not high on the priority lists around here - and kids still do get left back if they aren't progressing.
I can't speak about all districts in Virginia, just the one I live in, and we live in one of the 10 poorest counties in the state.

Thank you, we try. However when I said “around here” I was actually talking more about the community - not just mom and dad.
There is a woman at our church that scours all the local weekly papers for any mention of any parishioners and clips the articles, highlights the names and puts them on the bulletin board in the parish hall. More than one person questioned her why her name wasn’t on the list that quarter. It took her a while to say anything to me, but she eventually did tell me how embarrassed she was because the notice made her feel as if he had let folks down.
My wife, an unrepentant liberal, and I were discussing this massacre at lunch today. We decided that security could be enhanced nation-wide if all schools throughout the nation had bars on all the ground floor windows, all doors electronically locked when not in use, and having an armed citizen at the main entrance during school hours. He or she could unlock the doors with a flick of a switch in case of a fire or other emergencies as well as alerting the local LEO. And where, I hear you ask, is the funding for this plan coming from? How about disbanding the useless Department of Education and the equally useless local school district bureaucracy? Get rid of those and see how much we could apply to school security.
Goal setting & achievement is a good thing, to bad they have tried to take it all away and reduce it to, as long as you feel good , it's OK... Never be an astronaut with that feel good stuff. lol

No way can I go along with the bars on windows. In my district that means every window in every elementary school - talk about a safety hazard. Doors here are already electronically locked and alarmed and no one gets in without ID. That did not come about because of violence, but rather because of thefts a few years back. additionally there are Sheriff deputies in and out of all the schools daily without any seemingly regular schedule (although I’m sure there is), and one permanently assigned to each of the High Schools.
We’re not afraid of something bad happening - we’re just prepared for the possibility.
I have no problem with and armed citizen or LEO at the main point of entrance to any school and actuallly think it an excellent idea.
Yeah, right - becoming President used to be something one had to work too accomplish........at least it was when I was in school.
