Some L.A. gun buyback participants admit they still own weapons
The Los Angeles Times ^ | December 27, 2012 | Joe Mozingo and Westley Lowrey

Thousands of people exchanged guns for gift cards Wednesday during Los Angeles' gun buyback event.

But that doesn't necessarily mean those people gave up all their weapons.

Organizers and some participants credited collective outrage and anguish over the gun rampage in Newtown, Conn., for the turnout. But motivations were often a bit more complicated.

“That young guy shot up all the kids and they blamed the mama because the mama had the weapons in the house,” Valerie Butler said, explaining why she was waiting in line two hours in South Los Angeles to get rid of an old handgun.

Yet Butler, 50, said she was not getting rid of both of her guns.

“Just one,” she said, and laughed. “There’s a bunch of nuts out here, and they’re coming in when you’re sleeping. You got to protect yourself.”

Cars queued up for blocks at the event's drive-through locations, with the city giving up to $100 for handguns, shotguns and rifles, and up to $200 for assault weapons. There was a bit of haggling involved, but no questions asked.

“What do you got?” an officer in Van Nuys asked a man in his late 20 as he pulled up in a green Mazda.

“Just one handgun. I've had it since high school,” the man replied.

“Will you take $50 for this?”

“Sure.”

Many came bearing more than one gun. From the trunk of one white Honda came 22 pistols, a haul that earned the driver $1,000...

What a great way to sell the guns you stole! More money than a pawn shop!

Sandra Lefall, 38, came to the buyback with Newtown heavy in her heart. She had been thinking about the incident since she first heard the news. “I’m bringing in a 9 millimeter handgun because I want to get it out of the house because I have teenage children. I would hate for them to do what that guy in Connecticut did.”

Geeze, lady.

If you're worried that your teenage children are capable of something like that, you need to address a whole lot more than just the handgun.

If those “assault weapons” were legit, they’d be selling them in Nevada or Arizona for thousands of dollars, not $200.

This has happened before. Some people who turned in their guns used the money to buy better ones.

I wonder, did she take all the knives out of her kitchen and keep the car keys from the teenagers?

Buy junkers at a gun show, as long as the firing pin goes *snap* you can get $100 for each one, then go buy a Bushmaster.

From the leftist LA Times? Har!

Gun "buyback" programs are THE most stupid thing that bleeding-heart liberals have ever come up with regarding guns.

If they just stopped to think for a moment and have one brain cell left over their bleeding hearts, they would realize that like this lady, most are just turning in old crap for a free ticket.

As I've been trying to point out over and over on gun threads, if ALL 250,000,000 guns disappeared tomorrow, the bad guys would have access to those guns from a black market. These liberals actually believe that those turning in their few guns are the problem? Sheesh, a 10 year old could tell them differently.

I'm sick of these idiots and their stupid solutions. Arm our schools, theaters, malls, etc. with armed guards or civilian carries! The world is getting nasty because of a breakdown in mores. This is not rocket science. More armed citizens, less crime. Less armed citizens, more crime. It is verifiable fact. Geeze, these pussy liberals will never understand.

Amazed that the LA Times include that part of the statement. Well, good for her for recognizing that the bad guys are actually out there.

Arm Our Schools, Malls, Theaters, and any so-called "soft target".

” up to $200 for assault weapons”

I’ll bet that they didn’t have a lot of takers at that miserly price.

I got a feeling that when the next riot hits LA lots of hubbys will run to their firearm and find it missing because the wiffy got rid of it for a cheap gift card.

I think it was last year or so a couple guys in Nevada drove to Oakland for a buyback with few cases of “curio/relic” mosins or some similar clunker and cleaned the buyback out. This year you have to bring a residency identifier and there’s something like a 2 gun limit...

Blood of Tyrants said: "I’ll bet that they didn’t have a lot of takers at that miserly price." [$200/assault weapon]

Under Kalifornia law, one could take any center-fire rifle which will accept a detachable magazine and attach a pistol grip to it. Presto! An assault weapon.

I have a pistol grip to spare since I had to remove it from my "non-assault weapon" prior to the ban. If I attach one to any magazine fed, center-fire rifle, I'm good to go.

Of course, one would have to believe the "no-questions-asked" policy and risk felony conviction for "manufacturing an assault weapon" to do such a thing. There might be easier ways to get $200.
