News reports say that Reid and McConnell are going to work through the weekend to try ad reach a deal. House members have been called back to the Capitol, and the House is scheduled to meet Sunday evening. All this is designed to possibly get a bull that Obama can sign Monday morning, in order to avoid going over the fiscal cliff. But there's just one small problem, which nobody's talking about.. the House rule that mandates that no legislation can be passed until three days have passed, to allow for representatives, and the public, to read, understand, and comment on the contents of the bill.
Remember the travesty of then Speaker Pelosi deigning to tell we, the people, that "we have to pass the bill before we can know what's in it."
I would remind Boehner and the rest of the GOP leadership that is the main reason why she is now FORMER Speaker Pelosi.
If you want to follow her out the door, just go ahead and cram this through on Sunday.
We are facing a situation where the Senate will agree to a hideous bill, ( thanks, McConnell) and the Speaker of the House will bring it to the floor, and it will pass with all Democrat votes and maybe 10% of the GOP caucus.
And they are going to throw away their own vaunted reform rules to do so, the very promise of an open governance which is what led the American people to elect them in 2010.
This cannot be allowed to happen.
GOP=SQUISH
"Rules" are for little people.
The cowards can’t do anything in the open any more.
The 3 day rule won't apply to the bill that was already passed.
“You have to pass the bill to find out what’s in it” - Pelosi
next, a 60 foot high wall around Capitol Hill to protect them from the people ~
Rules??? We don’t need no stinkin’ rules!
Reid forced them to break the rule last year by stalling until a deadline came.
Making the Rs break their rule is a “two-fer” for Reid.
“Rules” like the “Law” is now time variant,
and applicable to some, not all.
Possibly a typo, or maybe a Freudian slip...either way very appropriate.
Ah, so technically they’re not breaking the rule if the name of the bill is the same even even though the language is completely different.
Reid only makes them break the spirit of the rule.
I was about to post the same thing. A very truthful slip of the pen.
If they didn’t do it that way it would not pass Constitutional muster.
A bull is a type of papal edict.
But your point is well taken, and probably more accurate!
Hell they don’t even read stuff before they vote on it
Haven’t you noticed that in the last 10 and especially the last four years, everybody in DC is above the law? They do what they want, regardless of its impact on the country or people. I would not be surprised if they held the vote by telephone with no recording of the individual votes, just Aye or Yeah allowed.
Escape from Congress, queue Snake.
next, a 60 foot high wall around Capitol Hill, THEN fill it with water !!!!!
Din't'cha' never try to figger out how you can go from Good Friday to Easter Sunday in three days?
Article I.
Section 7.
All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.
our government don’t need no steenkin’ rules
next, a 60 foot high wall around Capitol Hill to protect them from the people ~
New boss same as old boss.
Bonehead promised transparency. He lied.
They can vote to suspend the rules.
Wait until these cowards manipulate their rules to pass FineSwine’s gun ban bill...will Boner have any backbone to stop it?
We are in this position because Boehner REFUSED to stand on principle during the last round of debt ceiling negotiations. Remeber that period? All of the TEA Party Conservatives in the House were bullied and browbeaten by the Republican Leadership into accepting the bad deal which has set up this showdown now. And they were bullied and browbeaten because the imagined geniuses in the GOP were CONVINCED Mitt Romney would never lose to a disaster like Barack Obama...but that’s a whole other story, especially since now we’ve discovered Romney never even wanted the job in the first place.
The House voted in August to solve this problem. They should go home. This embarrassing spectacle we’ve seen for the last month - Boehner negotiating with himself and playing the part of the Obama sock puppet - has been a disgrace. The Conservatives in the House - by rejecting the horrible Plan B - MADE Boehner stay true to the August vote. And look what’s happening as a result! It’s the DEMOCRATS and OBAMA who are now squirming, fearing a backlash on THEM if taxes go up. Now all of a sudden they’re willing to take “mini deals” and kick the can down further. All of this because the TEA Party in the House told Boehner to go “eff” himself. And thank G-d they did!!
So the story is clear - Boehner needs to be replaced. The whole House Leadership needs to be replaced. We need people to lead in the House who aren’t afraid to FIGHT.
Well, my guess is they have had an agreement for months but wanted the little people to sweat enough to agree to massive tax hikes. We are being played....
And they are rolling out the skits in news stories this morning. Absolutely NOTHING that needs to be addressed in this nation will be covered by anyone’s scaled back, scaled up or scaled down fake cliff solution. A farce.
What really ticks me off - in speaking with my mother-in-law, who is quite removed from politics - only picking up what the network news says...
The "fiscal cliff" came up and she said "its those Republicans who won't do anything". I couldn't restrain myself (though I was very polite)... I said, the Republicans have put forward plan after plan, each time, drawing ever closer to what Obama demanded. Each time, he and Harry Reid said NO DEAL. I asked her two simple questions: "isn't negotiation about give-and-take? Isn't compromise about BOTH sides giving some so that you can meet somewhere in the middle?"
She said "I always thought so" -
I said that is exactly the point - The Republicans have proposed nearly all of what the President asked for - including tax increases, basically kicking the idea of spending cuts down the road... and the DEMOCRATS keep saying no. The president won't budget a penny. She looked very confused and started say something about "but they said on the news..."
I had to go hunting!
Been all through the building ~ but I referred to Capitol Hill which includes all the office buildings where they keep their hidey holes.

” possibly get a bull that Obama can sign Monday morning, “
I might watch that on the news!
They will just “deem” that 3 days have passed...
Our retiring congressmen mentioned to the local paper that he didn’t think a vote was likely. He doesn’t have staff or offices in either DC or in the district. He didn’t think it was logistically possible.
As much as this would suck, there is still a silver lining. The more Boehner pisses off other Repubs, the more likely it is that we’ll be able to get a new Speaker in :)
The need for the 2nd amendment has never been clearer.
And the need to defend it either.
FYI..Roll Call has an article posted at 11 am, to the effect that the Rules Committee is meeting Sunday..to pass the “rule” for any new bill that comes out of an agreement. Thus is NOT voting on a bill that the House has already passed.
— “but they said on the news...” ——
This is why the media is enemy #1. They make the Demcrimes possible. We have to boycott the network news advertisers.
That only applies to symbolic votes like honoring people.
It was never meant to apply to crises like this one and the debt limit.
If we go over the cliff then we all die, there will be no USA in 2013. You want to face that?
You didn’t actually believe them did you?
