Skip to comments.Newtown, gun regulations, sexy employees and the folly of “doing something”

Two very different news stories stood out for me recently. The first was the story of the killing of 26 innocent women and children at the school in Connecticut. The other was a story out of Iowa where a panel of judges said that a dentist could fire his assistant for being too attractive.
At first blush the two stories couldn't be more different. On the one hand you have a story of depraved indifference to human life, a real world example of pure evil. On the other you have a story of a dentist whos not disciplined enough to guarantee he wont hit on one of his employees. By any measure they are as different as night and day except when theyre not.
Immediately after the Connecticut shooting the anti-gun cries began. Anybody with a brain and a heart had to feel for the families of those 20 small children and the 6 teachers who tried to save them. The natural inclination is what can we do?
Similarly, when the story of the all male panels decision in Iowa became public, many people looked at that and said, thats wrong, thats discrimination, how can we fix that?
These very different stories share one thing, they engender calls for someone to do something, or more accurately, for the government to do something. Those calls dovetails with the very modern American notion that there must be a cure for all evils. The unfortunate thing about that is, that while its always possible for the government to do something, its rare that the government doing something actually solves the underlying problem.
Take the calls for more gun laws. While looking at pictures of the little children in Connecticut juxtaposed with images of the hardware the shooter used, one would have to have a stone heart not to want to do something about those guns. But the reality is that the state already had some of the strictest gun laws in the country and it didnt stop the carnage. In addition, history is replete with examples of mass murders via weapons other than guns. From fertilizer to planes to knives to Tylenol, its clear that if someone seeks to do harm, weapons are available. Indeed, between 1994 & 2004 there was an assault weapons ban in the United States but somehow Columbine occurred right in the middle of it.

This is in part why even a GOP-held congress, senate, and White House winds up being almost as interventionist as when the Dems are in power.
People go into politics because they want to "do something". No one, or perhaps precious few, ever went into office to do nothing, or to limit his own power, or to let the people muddle through by their own devices.
The kind of guy who goes into politics isn't satisfied to just make sure the roads are paved.
The column on the dental assistant never said she was “too pretty”. Instead, it said the wife wanted her fired, after finding text messages between her husband and his assistant. The dentist complied to save his marriage (and probably his business from scandal).
The spurned assistant put up a snit and lost, never holding any cards in either the business, nor the marriage decisions. Texting was not smart in a professional relationship, for either party, but the dentist was the job provider and free to reverse course and affect change.
What struck me about the assistant, was how weird it must be to hire what is in effect an extremely personal partner, someone who you will be spending most of everyday with in a personal 2 man team standing right next to each other, yet many people saying that once you make the hire, it is forever.
As a contractor who fires customers when they don’t fit my requirements of not negatively affecting my quality of life, I can’t imagine hiring a helper who I eventually want to let go, and be told that I can’t, that he will remain by my side for as many years as he wishes.
Also, evidently some on the right have adopted the left’s position of women in the military, in subs, and foxholes, it doesn’t cause sexual problems.
If banging your head against the wall doesn’t cure your headache, bang your head against the wall harder and faster.
It has been a few years but I once heard a sermon about adultery that contained the wisest advice I have ever heard. “When a man finds himself falling in love with a woman who is not his wife, he must never see her again.”
Since this man owns the dental practice, the only way to follow this Godly advice is to ask the woman to find another job. A woman with class and understandng would have no problem complying with such a request.
However, the dentist should have been man enough to admit it was his problem, not hers, and have moved heaven and earth to find her an equivalent or better job. If necessary he should have kept her on the payroll (without coming in) till she did find that job.
He did say it was his problem, so much so that his pastor was present when he asked the woman to find another job. He also said she would be given an excellent recommendation. He may not have been able to afford to continue paying her while hiring someone to replace her. A dental practice is a small business and such businesses have been suffering. A friend of ours who is a vet says his business is down significantly. People aren’t keeping their pets vaccinations current.
Honestly I think the man did the right thing and the woman is acting like a scorned lover.
A woman with class and understandng would have no problem complying with such a request.
The person to demonstrate class and understanding would be the dentist himself, recognizing that he is a hopelessly horny little bas$%rd and needs to get himself some therapy, both for himself and his marriage.
Oh Boy! You ever been married?
If his wife was pi$$ed about text messages that little bit of information would probably kill the marriage if not him as well.
36 years last week.
Wife would be pissed at me if this situation arose but I also think she wouldn't want me to make another suffer for my failings. She'd make me suffer instead.
Brace yourself. IMHO, things have gone south since women left the home. Every work place and institution, housing both sexes, have endlessly suffered their interminable agenda, while ushering in more men in skirts into society and lesbians throwing their weight around. Women have killed American society, churches and schools by running the things, and with very little help from real men.
How’s that? :D
An excellent rule, whether at home, the workplace at play. Common sense too.
