A Connecticut town thirty miles from Sandy Hook will give people $25 to incinerate their violent video games.
Southington, Connecticut is encouraging owners of violent video games to deposit them in a local dumpster near a drive-in movie theater, so that the games can be collected and destroyed. In return, the local Chamber of Commerce will give participants $25 gift cards to be used toward purchases of non-violent entertainment.
The Violent Video Game Return Program has the backing of a diverse coalition of groups, including the Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, fire department, board of education, as well as town officials and clergy members.
The program was born out of a desire to respond proactively to the recent shooting at Sandy Hook elementary that left over 20 children dead, which some say was caused in part by violent video games.
Southington schools superintendent Joe Erardi hopes the program will prompt parents to talk to their kids about violent video games...

Next will come burning violent books.
Lots of violence in The Holy Bible. The entire human race is wiped out at one point, except for a family that owned a boat.
Well I have a couple of old Nintendo games that I will send them if they will give me the $25.....Lets see Duck Hunt(Violent AND has a plastic gun).....Contra(Military Comando’s killing terrorists)........
Makes plenty of sense - the new Assassin's Creed had been released!
I’ve got some nasty old sneakers....always tempted to do a runner whenever I wear ‘em. And heck, I’ll let ‘em have ‘em for $10.
Seriously, this may be a good thing if it leads to people realizing just how silly all these “buy back” programs really are.
Lots of folks will be digging out all those old obsolete video games that nobody plays anymore.
LOL they can have my Borderlands 2 when they pry it from my cold dead STEAM or when a Goliath makes face gravy of me.
Virtually every video game ever created has some level of violence or conflict. I wish I lived near there. I’d dump every old game I had, then take the money and go out and buy some ammo and magazines. lol
Just picked up Borderlands 2. Great game so far!

Well, at least they’re not bitching about “Assault Weapons”. Buying a tool to protect yourself and your family and going to the range to sharpen your skills is far removed from sitting on your butt and playing a game.Read over Charles Krauthammer’s article and see if it changes your thinking any:

Skip that!
I just bought Call of Duty Black Ops. I’m gonna kill a bunch of pixels but, would never touch another person unless threatened.
Can’t. I will even pick up bees when they are in the house and release them outside. they are just lost.
Tiny Tina is a hoot, about 200 hours on the game (PC version) and I still find and hear new stuff. Well worth the bucks, got it during the Thanksgiving sale on Steam.
I’m still loving Far Cry 3.
Killin’ pirates and all sorts of animals.
It’s pretty sweet.
“...then take the money and go out and buy some ammo and magazines.”
Great idea, KoRn.
I’ve been passing them up at yard sales because of my lack of interest. Quite often for as little as a buck a piece!
I’ll be loading up on them this coming summer in hopes that this ‘buy-back’ thing catches on.

LOL!!! I’m hearing u there. Can make quick 500.
At long last I can unload all those Atari, Nintendo 64, and ps1 games.
Wow, Gamestop would probably give you $2 on trade in. Heck, this is a no brainer. A stack of old outdated games and you could trade in for a used IPad or even a new one. Perhaps there's enough left over for a new violent video game!
Of course this resolves nothing regarding the original issue, but if it makes them feel better...
Liberalism is a mental disorder.
Ah, my lovely hometown, which has a slim republican majority. I should ask my kid if he has any old “violent” games he wants to turn in for free gift cards.
