I was hoping to see that he supported the right to bear arms and what ever type of magazines a responsible - law abiding citizen wants to won...but I did not get that in this letter...maybe I'm not reading between the lines - or the Republicans in Wash DC are no different than their Democrat counterparts...
The part about, " the current and future role of our federal government in preventing these atrocious tragedies" is very concerning to me...seems like another reason for higher taxes and govt. control than a safety solution...
Here's my original letter: http://babylonscovertwar.com/OSR/Opinion/Opinion%20on%20Gun%20Laws%20and%20the%20Fiscal%20Cliff%2030%20DEC%202012.docx
I changed the last paragraph to fit sending it to my elected leadership in Wash DC..

(More dizzying than a Tilt-a-Whirl is an around-a-circle argument with a liberal about gun control.)

Well, there is an appropriate role of the Federal government in preventing these atrocious tragedies — to outlaw “Gun Free Zones” at government locations (such as schools) nationally. And to force private property owners that post their property as “Gun Free Zones” to accept liability for their patrons getting shot up by kooks that see that declaration as a free-fire zone opportunity. Make it a strict liability issue. I could get behind that kind of response.

but I did not get that in this letter...maybe I'm not reading between the lines - or the Republicans in Wash DC are no different than their Democrat counterparts...
Until proven otherwise, I'd read the letter as the Congressman standing by whatever position he previously held.
The fact is that we're still in the "emotional response" phase of post-Newtown. Eventually we'll transition to a phase where logic comes into play, but we're not there yet. Which is why Obama and the Dems are pushing a hurry-up offense on gun control.
Considering that there are lots of Lib organizations out there trying to maintain/perpetuate the emotional aspects of the tragedy to advance their agenda, it wouldn't be smart for any pro-2nd Amendment Congressman to start going on the record in any direction. Libs are actively trying to bait pro-2nd Amendment advocates into responses so they can beat them over the head with the emotional baseball bat. Witness how the NRA was being taunted for staying silent.
The letter you rec'd spelled out the facts of the situation, indicated that the Congressman supports 2nd Amendment rights and further indicated that there's going to be a discussion. It's about as vanilla and non-committal as you can get, which is understandable and acceptable given where we are at this point.
This is going to end up much the same way as Prohibition...a new bureaucracy that chases the bad guys who will still have the guns. People blindly run to Washington to solve problems.
Really? Why? People say the Dems want to end poverty yet last summer's report showed poverty is worse now than it's ever been. Since 1950, in all but 9 years, the Dems have controlled either the House or the Senate or both. Don't ya think 60 years is enough time for them to solve the problem? Or...could it be...the Dems want the poor to be dependent upon them? Perhaps...just maybe...they give people 99 weeks to find a job or hand out free cell phones (how can you possibly justify that?) to buy enough votes with your money to keep them in office.
When Obozo complains the rich don't pay their fair share...true, they don't. The top 10% of income earners in this country foot 71% of the federal tax bill. If anything, they need a huge tax break. Don't believe me? Read what's happening in France because of their 75% tax rate.
Obozo bitches about tax breaks for the rich. Really? You idiots are the ones who wrote the code in the first place and you did it with loop holes that get you reelected. Wake up, America, and start kicking some butts out of office.

(Some people are as dumb as soup.)
Since the government has a 100% failure rate in reducing violent crime through “gun controls,” it's no surprise they're going back to the well again.
