As revealed last autumn, Warners are planning to add to the recent spate of proposed Biblical epics with its own yarn based around Roman prefect Pontius Pilate. Deadline now reveals that Brad Pitt is circling the lead role. Reports that it's because he wants to wash his hands of World War Z remain unverified.
The familiar version of Pilate is more or less the one played - rather well - by Hristo Shopov in Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ, and by David Bowie in Scorsese's The Last Temptation Of Christ - although perhaps you prefer Telly Savalas in The Greatest Story Ever Told or Michael Palin's portrayal in Life Of Brian. He's the politician who orders Jesus' crucifixion, securing himself a role as one of history's greatest villains.
There is plenty more to his story than that, however, and the idea of showing the character's younger years as a ferocious military badass under the rule of Emperor Tiberius might perhaps explain the attraction to the historically, epically-inclined Brad Pitt of Wolfgang Petersen's Troy...

I don’t think that the scene of Christ and PP in Mel Gibson’s movie can ever be equaled or exceeded.

There is a very subtle but powerful aspect to that scene. When Pilate is questioning Christ, Christ effortlessly shifts his responses to Pilate from Aramaic to Latin. The look on Pilate's face morphs instantly from a supreme position of power and confidence to one of awe and fear as he realizes he is not dealing with a mere heretic or insurrectionist, but something completely different and unknown.
Agreed. That was a fantastic film (if deeply disturbing), and the portrayal of Pilate was an acting clinic unto itself. Pilate was indifferent, almost sympathetic to Christ and His predicament. He was furious that they almost killed Him during the scourging.
IOW, Pilate was shown to be a more complex man than some blood-soaked Jesus-hating villain-for-all-time.
It is coming out this summer. Basically fans of the book will not recognize any of the story, at least from what has been released. He may be perfectly fine acting in it, but a big deal was made that he was pushing to get the picture done. He will share the blame in many a fans eye for blaspheming the book.

A first century legend has it that, for the rest of his life, Pilate often for no reason asked for a bowl of water to wash his hands in.
There is an Ethiopian Orthodox sect that considers both Pilate and his wife saints, but it is based on a work (The Acts of Pilate IIRC?) that are not accepted by most mainstream Orthodox branches.

Pontius Pilate in Mel Gibson’s movie is pretty much as he is in the Bible. He condemned Jesus not because he wanted to, or because he hated Him, but because the whole business stuck him between a rock and a hard place, and it was the politically expedient thing to do.
In other words, he was more like Boehner than Obama.
But the point is that those in a position of power must provide justice and righteousness, not expediency. It isn’t enough to wash your hands if you go along with evil in order to save your career.
Ah....ok. Explains a lot. Kinda like “The Lord of the Rings” (although a huge majority of fans of Tolkein’s tomes loved the movies; gave Jackson a pass due to limited screen time, even spread across 3 movies) or “The Hunger Games” or countless other books-turned-into-movies. It’s VERY hard to please fans of the original books; almost impossible.
“The Hunt for Red October” was an exception....outstanding movie, very true to the book. There are others, but I have never heard of the book “World War Z” so I won’t be “upset” that the movie strays....but I can certainly understand why diehard fans would be.

He has recently delivered a number of outstanding performances, as in “Benjamin Button” and “Moneyball.”
This looks to be World War Z in name only. Fast zombies, instead of slow. Working like ants as a collective, not as mindless creatures. Just rubbish. At least the ones you mentioned followed the main thrust of the book. This would be like taking the Bible and turning Pontius Pilate into a sympathetic character...wait:-)

So true. The scene was so realistic. Pitt would make a very good Pontius Pilate. Hope they don't make the guy into a hero of some sort.
The scenes that made me sob, though, were the ones where Mary was seeing Jesus as a child. Now that I think about it I sobbed through much of the latter part of the film. Not a movie that is easy to be seen more than once.
To a certain extent this reflects what actually happened to Paul. It always puts a smile on my face when I read Acts 23:22 and it shows how different the Romans were from other people. I can imagine the Roman Commander getting ashen-faced when he learned that Paul was a Roman citizen

Any movie about the last physical day in the life of Christ on earth other than depicted by Mel Gibson would be a disappointment. Mel said and showed it all.

I thought Basil Rathbone made an effectively dastardly, aristocratic Pilate in THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII.

I did your research for you. Amazing that you claim to know all about a movie yet to release. Not only are you incredibly amazing at finding out the future but your bashing movie is not released until June 21, 2013! If you are not aware, today is January 8, 2013.....We are a LONG way away from World War Z release.
Read the book, then watch the trailer and tell me any scene in that trailer that is in the book. I apologize for bunching your panties.

A lot of people say that scene moved them the most. It did not have quite the effect on me that it did on some because I had seen it done memorably in King Vidor's silent WWI epic The Big Parade. There is a scene in which John Gilbert returns home after having lost a leg in the war. As his mother sees him take halting steps with crutches and one leg, she has a flashback of her son as a baby taking his first steps. Very powerful.
But, the scene in Passion of the Christ is still moving, regardless. What really gets me is the end of the scene, where Jim Caviezel as Christ says "See, mother, I make all things new". Hearing his voice break with the pain of the agony that is occurring is truly overwhelming.
Will Smith will be playing Jesus. Or else Tom Hanks. Baby needs a new Oscar.
Maybe Hollywood will just make it up. Wouldn't be the first time.

...aside from the Italicisms in the liturgical form (softening of C and G, and supposedly the change of V from a W sound to what we know today), it is hardly appropriate to speak of it as a separately developed language, because it is not...were it so, it would be more like one of the early daughter languages developed from late Vulgur Latin...
essentially, it is Caesar’s Latin with some daughter language pronunciation...an improvment in my opinion...speaking of Caesar, those who insist on ‘correct’ classical pronunciation would have us say “wayni, weedy, weecky”...ugh...
I actually prefer the sound of the classical pronunciation, despite the fact that "Ceasar" and "Cicero" are pronounced "kaiser" and "kickero." Nonetheless, when the Gaylords recorded Veni, Vidi, Vici, I'm glad they used the liturgical pronunciation.

...ah yes, kickero, indeed...I guess I sympathize with James Hilton’s Mr. Chips, who as a Latin teacher was highly indignant with the modernists’ auricular interpretation of a language that hadn’t been heard in over 1500 years, and refused to teach it...good for him...I choose to believe that intervocalic G’s and C’s were already softening by the first century, not because there is any evidence of that but simply because I like it better that way...
...also, kudos to the poster providing the Ben Hur video...an incredible piece of film footage...combined with the moving nativity scene, and its accompanying score, altogether a beautifully done movie...
And Barry Dennen's portrayal showed that Pilate can sing, too.
