The big lie in this whole thing is that we have this sensible country with a dysfunctional Washington. The reality is we have a country of people who want to bankrupt their children and spend money on themselves and they will punish any politician who prevents them from doing that. They will punish Republicans if they cut entitlements. They will punish Democrats if they cut entitlements.

People don't seem to realize that there is no money. The government cannot pay its bills without borrowing. The game is over, and the entitlements HAVE to be cut.
Instant Gratification. That is all that the majority of Americans care about. There is no long-term thinking. It’s all about the next television program, store purchase or sexual encounter.
Hell the Leftists are now carping about the tax “hike” they got when the ill-advised 2% Social Security “cut” expired. Now might be a good time to educate them on why letting the Bush tax cuts expire is really a tax hike and point out that less money is less money no matter who you are and that the governments thinks it knows better how the People’s money should be spent.
The game is over, and the entitlements HAVE to be cut.
In the Soviet Union old people worked until they couldnt and then they died. The money they got and managed to save was inflated into uselessness by the government. That is happening here too. A medium priced car in 1970 was $3,000. A medium priced car now is $28,000. You might argue that the car now is better, safer, blah, blah, blah. The point is that even if it were exactly the same car it would still cost $20,000. The dollar has devalued that much.
Im 59. I expect Ill have to work until I drop. At my last job they hired a contract engineer who was 89. They didnt know how old he was or how mired in the past his skills were. He drove all the way from California to Florida to take a temp job. He was useless. But it killed me when the laid him off because he was desperate for the job. (Oh, and he had to pay income taxes in California because he owned a house there he upside down in and couldnt afford to sell.)
To prepare myself for this ordeal, Ive dropped 25 pounds, I work out daily and Im saving as many rubbles as I can. But I will never be able to retire. I can see what happens to people who retired 30 years ago on Social Security. Their income barely increases and it certainly doesnt keep pace with inflation. The government has well and truly screwed us all.
We have become tax slaves. As long as there are taxes nobody actually owns anything. I downsized my house to a mobile home. Its paid for, but Ill have to move someplace else to take a job and Ill always owe taxes on it regardless.
I refer to this as "Free Republic Dancing with the Stars" featuring:

When the 47% of Takers no longer get their money, there will be riots, just as in Greece. Many are not Americans and have come to ride on the gravy train. When it stops, there will be hell to pay.

I remember seeing a poll were even TEA Party members were opposed to any changes in SS and Medicare.
Oh yeah, there were people at Tea Party rallies with signs saying “Obama - Hands Off Our Medicare!!” - easily used by the left to ridicule the TP, and in that particular case they were correct in doing so.
I agree. I personally know TEA Party members who will say the same things. The idea of any so called entitlement changes, even though they are necessary, make them upset.
I'm not opposed to the TEA Party. I'm glad they exist. But they are also guilty of the “limited government and reduced spending as long as it doesn't affect me” mentality
