My new years vow is to immediately ignore any wordsmithing. Cute fluffy bunnies are just bunnies. Assault rifles are just rifles. The bunny is just as soft as the fluffy one. Well, from my standpoint, I don't NEED to buy an "Assault Rifle". Frankly, I don't have the money even if I wanted to purchase one (especially now), or to feed it. :-)

However, I do have need to BE ABLE to buy one.

I suspect that's a differentiation that's lost on liberals.

And, While I'm up on my soapbox, every time I hear the term "Assault Rifle", I think of someone getting butt-stroked (assaulted) with one. My dad taught me that the correct term was "Semi-Automatic". Or, I suppose, "Automatic", in a few cases.

First question I would like an answer to is this:

WHAT IS AN ASSAULT RIFLE? DEFINE IT!

I know there are rifles, I believe “assault rifle” is a fully automatic rifle, usually issues and used to and by the military for the purpose of defending our country. (that is, if there is even something formally called “assault rifle”)

When someone asks this, first ask them to define an assault rifle. Most of the time they will be under the mistaken impression that they are talking about machine guns, which have been very tightly regulated since 1934. Then you can set 'em straight about how today's semi-autos are not machine guns and only cosmetically different from granddad's rifle.

The media loves to blur the distinction between the two...
